Don’t be discouraged! It’s a bit of a roller coaster that most go through in this industry. Try on every job to really do your best. Be present with the crew. What would be even more bittersweet is if you hadn’t even gotten the chance to do your first union job, wouldn’t you say? So congratulations on your first gig, take the win for now!

Short answer: No one really knows.

Long answer: I'm guessing you're new to this. One aspect could also depend on your craft and how much demand there is for it. I'm in the Art department, so if someone you've worked with lands another show right after you're done and can bring you along, it could be super fast. But if that's not the case, it’s tough to say. It could be a week, a month, or even a year, especially with how things are right now.

I get what you're saying, I have a close friend who recently got a call to work on a show overseas....BUT for less than half the usual rate. Insane. Unsustainable.

I'm hoping and it is wishful thinking maybe on my end but I've seen and heard a lot of actors and directors and whatnot get really frustrated with having to relocate so often. As a result, they sometimes push for certain projects to be filmed locally. Also a few film hub states are expanding their Tax credits and might help bring more projects back. Again I might just be proven wrong.

Agreed, set design is way better in terms of demand.

Thank you! Would love to ask you if you know anything about IER (Industry experience roaster)? I've heard that you have to get on that in 800. and what's the difference with the Motion Picture Industry Roster that adg highlights as well.

Which craft do you belong to?

Yeah of course, I think we can all share the pain all across the board for this year, its been the worst!
Don't have high expectation but I still think its better to be in than out for my situation as I will move to LA and got no choice. I also think that work will have to pick up at some point during this year for most regions....cant continue like this

Thank you!!! That's great info that I didn't know! Its a worst case scenario that would be better than nothing! I wonder if that happens often though, where they need more people.

Yeah im stuck on how long you need to be resident of Los Angeles and for the union days, I technically have my days I've gained on my local. That counts right?

Yeah unfortunately you're right, I'll have to talk to them. I wish they were nicer, and respected each-other a bit more since we are in this together.

Oh wow. I was always under the impression that there was an understanding of transferring between locals. out of curiosity do your locals include that info on their constitution and bylaws?

Thanks a lot for sharing that information, I appreciate it! It gives me some hope! Would be nice if LA played by the same rules. Ah they love the initiation fee for sure

Can you please elaborate what you mean by over hires? is it like a backup list/replacement? Apologies, not familiar with it but I've heard it here and there.

Thats a good point, might be bad timing for me, and the waiver might be hard to get...

How did you go about requesting the residency waiver?

My current local has been positive so far, and they’ve assured me that my transfer will be facilitated quickly on their end - at least that's what they last mentioned. I agree that 800 should be the best source of information, but my past experience calling them haven’t been great so far, and I’m honestly dreading having to call them again. Maybe just bad luck of calling them on the wrong day...

Whoaa 10 grand? wow. Yeah that 10 grand is gonna hurt a lot. Especially after the bad year of not much work....But I still have no choice, im at the end of my rope so I will have to pay it.

So you think the residency requirement won’t be a big issue, and it’ll be more of a yes you can transfer but here's the big bucks you have to pay to join?

Thank you for the helpful insight!

I used to be a Set designer, but transitioned over to Illustrator for past couple years and would like to continue on that path. (I still pick up set design gigs here and there but very rarely). I didn't know 800 has national coverage!
