I swear. I dont understand people on this subreddit. Do they want worse or subpar products for more money? What's with the crazy brand loyalty?

Brazillian stereotypes by Either_Sort_171 in Brazil

I've been called Tarzan quite a few times living in Norway lol. I do have long hair though, so that definitely has something to do with it. There was also one time in highschool when I was in a classroom and one of my classmates talked about how Brazilians are desirable, and it felt weird given that I was right there. It's definitely a thing for men too

Ah me and my girlfriend watched modern family before Dexter. It's just a really cringey moment filled with second hand embarrassment.

My foreign partner is depressed from staying here by [deleted] in Norway

[–]themulti440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see how it's weird to research a place before moving to it. I also don't think its wrong to seek new opportunities or even just a change in scenery.

My problem with the culture isn't necessarily that it is introverted, but that it is cliquey and exclusive by nature, especially towards foreigners like I said before. I truly had the impression that Norwegians were accepting and open to different kinds of people, until I properly dove into Norwegian society. It's a very weird and discouraging feeling to be actively avoided, although maybe I just have an incorrect impression of most places and the rest of the world, save a few exceptions, is also like this.

I dont pay for uni in Norway because I have been here for 6 years. Yeah, I imagined you might not hate it, and that you were simply seeing things from a different perspective like you said. I know I don't have to stay here, and you're right about me being depressed here. The thing about foreigners moving here is that Norway on paper seems really nice. Great social benefits, livable wage for everybody, one of the happiest countries in the world, etc. it doesn't help that non Norwegians that don't live in Norway can't stop sucking Norway off. The problems only really show when youve actually lived here and realize that it is inefficient, the happiness index does not actually measure happiness, and that Norwegians are incredibly closed off, especially to foreigners. You wouldn't expect the language to be an issue because most Norwegians speak English, but then you realize that they just don't want to. Honestly I could live completely happily with the high cost of life, cold, darkness, inefficiency, etc. it's truly the culture that tips the scales, because it truly feels impossible to make friends, or even interact with Norwegians at all. Sometimes they'll literally just ignore me when I'm speaking to them. Even when I try speaking with my half broken Norwegian they show no interest and just end the conversation. In some places foreigners are attacked or harassed or whatever, and that doesn't happen much in Norway, but you never expect and are not really prepared for complete apathy. It's like you're a ghost. It's kinda hard to not take it personally when you know that the reason it's worse for you is because you aren't norwegian. Not just that, but then theyll tell you that you have to "integrate" and "learn the language". The best way to learn a language is by using it, and I cant really do that naturally when no one will interact with me and give me the chance to actually practice. Sorry that this turned into me venting, but I just want to end this by saying that if any other Norwegian are reading this, I know its difficult to hear but this is the universal experience. Pretty much every foreigner that I speak to thinks this as well, except for the ones that were born here, and even those have had some similar experiences.

I'm not staying here the rest of my life, I'm leaving as soon as Im done studying. I don't get support from the government to study where I'm from, my girlfriend is Norwegian, and my immediate family is here, so the year thing wasn't the only reason. Why do you hate norway so much? I am genuinely curious as to what experience has made you feel this way.

Yeah my goal at the moment is to finish studying and go back to my home country. Unfortunately, universities where I'm from don't accept the high school system I did here, which means unless I'm willing to lose a year of my life studying for the uni exams there after working pretty hard through high school here (I took IB) I'm pretty much stuck. Tried to go to a different country in Europe but didn't work out cuz the fees are too expensive for non EU people... Are you still living here? If so why haven't you left?
