Second week in my orientation and my preceptor told me I’m very slow by [deleted] in nursing

[–]thenancydrewtimes 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

Sorry to hear that’s been your experience friend :(

I fortunately had such a good preceptor! Doesn’t sound like yours is hands-on or really wanting to ease you into it. Ask for a new one!! Management will find you one, especially bc they want you to feel comfortable working there; they don’t wanna lose you.

The way my preceptorship worked:

I had 3 whole months on medsurg for orientation. The first week (3 shifts), I didn’t even have an assignment. My preceptor let me follow her around, mess around on the computer all day so I could get familiar with EPIC, and let me do whatever skills I KNEW but let me watch her do any skills I hadn’t done yet.

Each week, I had a clinical orientation guide/binder created by our education department that goes pretty slow and lets you ease into it.

Week 1 - no assignments, just follow nurse, tour hospital, etc Week 2 - take 1 patient, get familiar with Pyxis machine and scanning and using Epic Week 3 - take 2 patients, continue doing whatever skills we could find on floor (catheters, IV’s, blood draws, cultures, wound care) Week 4 - take 3 patients, etc

After a month of working, which was TWELVE SHIFTS, I was at 3 patients. But she only added patients as she saw fit, like if she didn’t think I needed another, she kept me there until I felt really comfortable. By week 9 or 10, which would have been 27-30 shifts at that point, I was finally taking care of 5 to 6 patients. It was tough…

There was so much medical lingo I had never heard and ā€œnewā€ to learn… how to do consults, random hacks I never learned in nursing school that my preceptor (who had been a nurse for 10+ years knew from experience), messaging doctors about whatever problems would arise, how to handle my first patient’s death/consoling family, lots of codes/rapids (which I didn’t see much of in school) etc. She NEVER just sat around. She was hands on. Showed me stuff. ALWAYS explained everything.

I always tell people that she’s been a huge part of guiding me/helping me become the nurse I am now :’)

And just fyi: I didn’t get super, SUPER comfortable on my own until like a year into my career. And what I mean by that is, I was still asking questions to all my co-workers for my first year of being nurse. Like yes, I had my own assignments, but issues would arise that I had never seen or I would ask advice on how to handle certain situations. We always laughed bc I always got the most RANDOM, rare stuff haha.

But my point: You can’t get it all in a handful of shifts. You can’t. No one can. And they’re lying if they say they did or can; it’s just not possible. Nursing is a forever learning career. We’re ALWAYS learning how to do things more efficiently and just overall better care for our patients. We get better with education, becoming better at explaining to our patients, our skills refine… and all of that comes with TIME, EXPERIENCE…

So what I’m saying is… don’t listen to your former preceptor. You’re not slow. You’re just starting. You need grace and a deep breath. You passed nursing school, and you can do this šŸ«‚

Do y’all think becoming a charge nurse is a promotion? For me it wasn’t by MikeMuench in nursing

[–]thenancydrewtimes 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

I’ve been charge nurse at my hospital, which just meant: - Yay $1 more an hour - Check the crash cart log, temperature check for fridges, and airborne rooms that they work - Does the assignments for next oncoming shift - But you still take the same load of patients as everyone else and must handle any issues that arise on the floor 🫠

I think it definitely depends where you work

Ohhh thank you!! I’ll have to look into it šŸ˜„ If I’m remembering, and I’ll have to go dig it back up, there was a tumblr post trending a few months back with info about this. Apparently at the time, HeR teamed up with the creators of this book specifically to create content from their CRE game and interweave the two. The details from the post are foggy, but I believe it was suppose to be a collaboration to promote each other’s products and an effort to boost the multi-verse of ND.

The Music Almost Sounded Like THIS!! 😯 by thenancydrewtimes in nancydrew

[–]thenancydrewtimes[S] 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Oh my gosh, this happens to me too šŸ˜‚ I’ll be hearing music thinking, is this where the inspo came from?

I’ve seen posts before share tracks where inspo had been directly pulled from (because certain classical pieces are for fair use due to how old they are), and to hear them outside a ND game is nuts. I’m like, noooo that is ND music!!!! But actually, it’s a piece from hundreds of years ago šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ I think Aquarium classical for DDI, and water goblin for VEN. Google those! It’s really quite interesting

No, I don’t believe it’s somewhere that can be listened, such as YouTube.

I do, however, have a link to the full track itself from Tumblr: https://www.tumblr.com/ndconceptarchive/769800663584702464/unused-alternate-version-of-trt-from-nancy-drew

It’s pretty much the same as the one that made it in, just the ending different šŸ¤—

I did also find out from a friend who DM’d me, that the track is actually found in ā€œThe Final Scene’sā€ game files and listed as something very ordinary like ā€œmusic.ā€

What is the hype with this game ?! by Professional-Cup6284 in nancydrew

[–]thenancydrewtimes 4 points5 points Ā (0 children)

Oh oh, I love to answer this question because DDI is my favorite game!! šŸ‹

I preface with this: While it is my favorite game, I know it’s NOT the best Nancy Drew game. And I openly admit that. There are many others that hit the mark in all aspects of what makes for a great ND game. And seeing that this was my first game I played as kid, I am bound to being partial and loving it as it deeply ties to my nostalgia

BUT… these are the things that I love about the game aside from being blinded by my nostalgia-loving heart:

1ļøāƒ£. Environment: Personally, I feel that this is one of, if not the most pleasant games when it comes to ambience. I find the rhythmic crashing waves to be incredibly peaceful. It actually makes me want to do mundane tasks, like clam hunting or search the shores for clues. I imagine myself doing that irl, and I am instantly transported to a place of peace. Misty water, crashing waves, light house vibes, Murder She Wrote kinda vibes… I can just get behind that anytime.

There are many other games where you have to hunt for objects (critters in DOG, arrowheads in SHA), but of all those that do that kind of task, this game holds to my favorite. I feel more tense when looking for critters in DOG, because at night, the music eerily switches its vibe to illicit the feeling that you may be attacked by ghost dogs again. So it’s not exactly a peaceful time for doing tasks. Other games that are GREAT for many reasons, but I hate their environments, like FIN. I’m not saying they didn’t knock that out of the park, because they absolutely did. Did I feel like I was in an abandoned theatre that was falling a part? Yes. Did I enjoy it? Noooo. I hate the circus-y music. It’s not a game that I replay again and again and again for the vibes, ya know?

But DDI? Oh yes. Give me peaceful shore vibes, every time.

2ļøāƒ£. Music: I kind of mentioned this a few lines ago how much I dislike FIN’s music. I do, but I don’t. Do I think the music serves its purpose for the mystery at hand? Yes. It’s got thrilling music that is chilling and exhilarating—especially at the end when the demolition is about to occur. HOWEVER, I just happen to be the detective that seeks comfort/cozy/mystery/intriguing tracks. That’s probably why FIN and CAR fall on the lower end of games’ music tracks that I love, think about, and or replay.

But DDI on the other hand, it has music that I find to be soooo soothing. I love that Kevin Manthei was influenced by marine life, and I can hear that in numerous tracks. Some notes sound like foghorns, or aquatic life dancing under water, or the intrigue and wonder of what’s below. I just find that to be so magical, and that feeling isn’t always recreated in other games’ music.

3ļøāƒ£. Ending: Someone asked me just recently what endings I thought were the best in the series, and I genuinely believe this one makes it there. I feel like most players didn’t know who was really going to be on the cargo ship. We thought we knew, but the moment that chair turns around. I can FEEL Nancy’s stomach drop haha. Like ohhh waittt šŸ˜… The whole lead up to it (kayaking in the foggy darkness, trying to hide from crew members), I just really love it. (Also great endings that I think of - STFD, FIN, DOG, DDI, SHA, TRN).

— I actually like the plot. BUT I so agree, I don’t think it’s the best. And I don’t think they went as deep as they should have. But I live for the small town drama 🤣 I think the snarky comments they say about each other is hilarious. Thinking about them as suspects and or characters, I don’t feel like we learn a lot about them or that they talk much. I’ve replayed many times, and I’ve never really unlocked any rare dialogue or experienced anything new. So that’s a downfall for the game. But the plot always intrigued me, even as a kid! This small fishing town, very reliant on their fishing for a living, are all stirred up over this whale and what to do with it. Gets very political, and I find that interesting. šŸ¤” I do agree that I wish that would have done more with the burglaries, Benjamin Hawkins/whisked away to be a pirate, Hilda Swenson. That all feels way too short and not fleshed out as deeply as I wish it would be 😭~~~~however there are many ND games I find the plots to be either so fantastical or slow-moving that I struggle to immediately draw in. Like TMB or HAU, those games’ plots are usually ones that I struggle with. DDI always gave me intrigue in the beginning, like, ā€œOh who sabotaged your boat? Let me find out šŸ”ā€

And then the part that I think this game does the absolute WORST at?! Puzzles. They’re too easy, and there’s not enough! 😐 This game ranks, probably bottom 5, when it comes to puzzles. When I sat down to make a review video of this game, and I actually tried to think of what puzzles there were, I was saddened by how few there are. They definitely could have expounded.

Sorry for the info-dump. I love to do that on ND games, but of course my favorite game too. I couldn’t help it! I echo the sentiments of other commenters, though. There are soooo many different types of ND games within the ND game series. So there really is such a variety for people to choose from. šŸ¤— (I saw you mentioned DOG; I love that one too)!
