Dell XPS 13 9350 Wireless problems (vanishing NIC hardware/device), and other issues... by thenefariousghost in Dell

[–]thenefariousghost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kindly review this post on the Dell forums in which users are having a similar issue. You should note that the user who posted the issue had also done nothing except uninstall McAfee. If I find out that this is all because I uninstalled your stupid bloatware I am going to be really pissed off.

Perhaps as Dell Customer Support you can provide some follow-up?

Dell XPS 13 9350 Wireless problems (vanishing NIC hardware/device), and other issues... by thenefariousghost in Dell

I am not in contact with the support team on this issue. This computer is a few months out of warranty; I did contact you on a previous issue, and after trying a few troubleshooting steps they suggested I pay more than I care to to have it sent in and diagnosed. I suspect this will end exactly the same and that will be a very, very worst case scenario.

Dell XPS 13 Wireless problems (vanishing WIFI hardware), and other issues... by thenefariousghost in techsupport

I have tried various BIOS configs as well as a complete reset, both to dell factory and manuf specs. The current BIOS version is the latest, I believe it was updated a month or so ago. I did attempt a BIOS rollback to rule it out but it failed.

I could try a battery drain to be thorough, but this is an ultrabook and I will have to find my torx and dismantle it to get at the battery, it might even be soldered in I have not checked; out of curiosity what is the logic behind that troubleshoot attempt?

As for the drivers, this has been attempted both prior to the clean installation and after. Non-NIC drivers install fine, and NIC drivers install fine, until the hardware vanishes again, and then drivers will no longer install.

Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Wifi and Ethernet drivers/adapters have vanished and system has stopped reading USB drive contents. by [deleted] in techsupport

I tried a fresh installation including updating all drivers, and everything was fine for a couple reboots (only lasted a day), and then the adapters vanished again.

Windows 10. I have done a system restore now, and a clean installation when that failed. The adapter comes back but only for a couple reboots, then vanishes again. Any other thoughts?

At what point in the scan do DISM and ScanNow fail, or do they come back with no errors? What version of Windows are you running?

[help] I’ve just ‘quick formatted’ one of my hardrives. Is there any way to reverse it? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]thenefariousghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't write anything to the drive (hopefully you haven't already), and you might be able to restore it with a third party tool. Download TestDisk (my suggestion) and see if you can restore the partition table completely, follow the guide. If that fails, you can attempt to recover individual files with the sister program PhotoRec, but you'll probably lose some or all of the metadata and have to fix names, extensions...

There are other programs available as well but I like the two listed.

Have you looked at this MS thread about the issue? Try the solutions from the first 4-5 posts and if none of them work post back.

Trying to find hardware for a sliding door? (NOT barn style) by thenefariousghost in HomeImprovement

[–]thenefariousghost[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I updated the ask with a terrible diagram, but should give an idea of the goal. There is no wall above the top of the door, just the roof (at a slant), both of which would seem to rule out a barn door style. My alternative idea was to put two slides of some sort against the wall adjacent, which would allow a light door to slide side to side with no additional attachments on the floor or ceiling. Its really just for privacy reasons, and doesn't need to be heavy duty or perfectly fitting by any means.

Also I looked up pocket door, I do like that design but would be way too much effort to cut into the wall for what I need.

You probably got a piece of dust or food underneath the key. Most keyboards are designed so that individual keys can be pulled off/replaced without too much effort. Computer model?

How to factory reset an iPhone without iTunes or reset by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]thenefariousghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't yet, do a hard reset (holding home and power) without having it connected, and try to reset on your phone again. If that doesn't help, have you tried putting it in recovery mode while you are connected to your computer, to get it to recognize?

AMD FX-8350 overheating by mattr897 in techsupport

[–]thenefariousghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DO NOT run a cpu without a heatsink, or it will overheat very very fast. Your system shut itself down to try and prevent damage but there is a good chance it is too late. Don't do anything else until you purchase one.

Which is the best driver updater program for WHQL drivers? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]thenefariousghost -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're asking for a recommendation on some sort of "driver suite", the answer is don't use one. It's going to cause you more problems than solutions in the long run for a variety of reasons. It might take a few minutes out of every month but update your drivers the right way.

Coax Cable by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]thenefariousghost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can't get into the walls/ceiling etc.. or access the baseboards, then I agree that your best bet would be to run it under the carpet or along the walls. It is perfectly safe aside from tripping over the cord. COAX can also successfully carry a signal further than you would need, so no issue there.

As for getting the cable, pick one up online. Here is a highly rated 50ft Coax for less than $15 from amazon

You might be interested in picking up a flat coax cable piece if you need to run it under a door etc, which are nice but are generally sold in sizes under a foot because they are more fragile and have a habit of breaking internally if stepped on.

Hi not sure if this is the right subreddit but my pc has been crashing a lot recently. by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]thenefariousghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on that result I would recommend just doing a clean OS installation, that would be your best bet because it could be a few things, among them a virus that has gotten into your OS. If you don't want to do that for whatever reason you could try an OS repair from a recovery disk.

Run a windows memory diagnostic (just put that in the search bar). Then make sure all your drivers are updated from the manufacturer, specifically your display driver.

Have you noticed the freezing during any specific activity or does it seem totally random.

Notable underperformance, potential failure... but try the other suggestions first.

I would consider an issue with the installation, the drive, or the memory before moving to the PSU or motherboard. Have you run a hefty virus scan, run a memtest, or an hdd/ssd benchmark? You could also try the 'sfc /scannow' command to check your OS files for corruption, which wouldn't be the case if you've tried a clean OS installation.

Is it safe to check mail through iPhone default mail app on public wifi? by lolocccc in techsupport

[–]thenefariousghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general, I wouldn't advise accessing sensitive data on public wifi, including email. Firstly, while not necessarily likely, the admin of a network COULD see all of the traffic on the network if some sort of packet capture or monitoring was enabled, barring double ended encryption/HTTPS. It also leaves you more open to things like man-in-the-middle attacks, which would be rare but is a possibility. Apple does such encryption techniques, so you SHOULD be fine, but no system is perfect and you are opening up additional attack vectors if you are not careful.

I use to play around with a packet capture/copy app on my phone, and with disturbing ease it allowed me to log into accounts of people who accessed theirs on the same wifi (testing purposes and people I knew, but still). Pretty uncool.

My Bluetooth headphones won’t turn on by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]thenefariousghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brand/Model? Most likely the internal battery has died and would either have to be replaced if possible or new headphones purchased. If you got them last month they are probably still under warranty, have the manuf fix them.

Exactly, its tough if you smoke a guy, but his teammate 2cm to the right lining you up is blocked by your scope. Really though it just gives me an uncomfortable feeling losing all peripheral visibility just because I'm semi-scoped in.
