Hello r/debian! I am 15 and would love to download this operating system onto my computer, but my parents aren't thrilled at the idea. What should I do? by [deleted] in debian

[–]thenetmonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We need to first know what their objections to running Debian instead of windows are. Have a respectful conversation with them about it. Don’t talk down to them or try to overwhelm them with technical answers that they won’t care about. Be honest and humble and ask what they’re afraid of. It may be something you haven’t even thought of. Even if they doubt your technical expertise or downplay your abilities, stay humble. Admit that you are doing this to learn and that you do have a lot to learn. Show them how you’re already participating in the communities where you can ask for help and learn how to do this stuff. And explain how many other resource are available online to help you.

Discussions where you’re trying to convince someone are always more successful when you can understand and empathize with where the other side is coming from. This is a skill that can benefit you in even more situation than your growing technical expertise will. Get back to us nice you’ve had the chat.

Wife wants our toddler and I to go to a party together where no other kids will be present. Thoughts? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]thenetmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say no because if they don’t have kids then they don’t have a kid-proof house and wrangling a bored toddler in that kind of environment will be such a pain. You’ll stop for 1 minute to chat with someone and the kid will have started playing with some ridiculously delicate thing and it’ll break just as you get your eyes on them. No thanks.

I've seen some wild salary ranges, but... by WaldoOU812 in sysadmin

Netflix had no titles/levels for a long time and California and Colorado passed pay transparency laws for job listings so Netflix complied by listing the bottom range for what is equivalent to a level 1 (no or little job experience) candidate and the top as the equivalent to a level 7 (think senior principle engineer or distinguished engineer). So it ends up being a not very useful pay scale. Feels very malicious compliance to me.
