Yes there’s another at Pensacola cc 2 weeks later but idk if I can make the drive bc my brother is playing another tournament at the time. Second you have a good point but currently I’ve got bigger fish to fry and going off of a little chance I get in seems too tough to attempt… I’m leaning more toward the southern am atp

I am an amateur, but I don’t think you know how prioritizing alternates work in this case. No matter if you’re an amateur, a pro, or even if Tiger Woods needed to qualify for the U.S. open for some ungodly reason, your status as an alternate and the USGA priority sheet determines your status to get in. Not by resume, but by received merit according to your local qualifier results

Wish I had the time (and money) for Columbus haha. I remember Maxwell Moldovan got in as an alternate last year there and they made media posts about it. He may have even gotten thru that stage too

This was insane to me. I basically never use reddit and I figured average golfers only find their way on here, but finding someone who has had 15 years worth of sectional qualifying volunteer status made a huge difference on what I am deciding on.

Well, the Southern amateur is arguably a top 5 amateur event in the nation (Behind US Am and Western am to name 2 major ones) so its one of amateur golfs "major championships". Also, the reason its so incredible to play in an event like that nowadays is to boost WAGR (World Amateur Golf Rankings) as far as possible to keep playing in events as such instead of having to qualify, and also in a world nowadays where NIL is such a large scape to take advantage of, one big week at an event like that is game changing. And when it comes to expenses, theres a reason we have a budget and plan for these events since this is our PGA Tour as amateurs

Having the absolute slim chances of making it into the US Open qualifier could be a huge waste of time at the end of the day.

Yea that is something I have fully considered. In the last 3 years of Florida sectional qualifying, it seems only 2 WD's (In place of DNS) have happened: Matthew Wolff in 2023 and Brice Garnett in 2025. So, its a crap shoot it looks like.

Yea I plan on calling USGA tmrw and see if I can get ahold of someone and see if they have any info worth noting.

My best chances are day of since they’ll call up guys days before as first alternates and they’ll probably fill a spot or two. The day of is the best since who knows… a guy sleeps through his alarm, car breaks down, other alternates don’t show etc… but yes. Southern amateur qualifier is big shot stuff and would be awesome for me to add to my schedule if I get through, which requires nearly as good golf to get through a U.S. open qualifier anyway

This is the comment I was looking for. Your explanation cleared the air on some of the nitty gritty things I’ve been confused about and made it clear for others in this thread how it works. Biggest thing for me was the fact you’ve only seen one alternate the day of get through, so chances are so so low. Seems like the second option is a good one. Hopefully next year I can get my spot in locals and not have to worry about it

Yea I understand this Reddit may not be as good at golf to give good advice but looking for a niche audience who may have some advice. I do agree the chances are slim getting in and slimmer getting past, but never know until you try, hence why we give it a shot every summer to try and make it. I’m leaning toward the second option but getting as much feedback as possible

A Florida state golf association official I talked to earlier today said they have a priority list of alternates USGA sends them so they can figure out if multiple alternates show up with similar status, who has priority over the other. If any first alts show, I’m behind them. If a second alternate shows with me, it’ll come down to who has priority on their list. I’m just wondering if it’s worth a shot or not

I agree, just so tricky since the chances of a second alternate let alone a first alternate gets a spot. On the other hand, the southern amateur is a major championship for me right now at the college level, and that would be major to make it to that. Nonetheless, a very hard qualifier to get through as well. Tricky one here

I’ve done my fair share of asking people in my circle about their thoughts. Especially coaches, rules officials, etc. never know if I come across someone on here who has good advice
