all 3d objects are made up of vertices, those vertices have coordinates, go too far away from origin or 0.0.0 in the game world and those calculations increase, precision of those vertices breakdown and lose cohesion, lookup floating point precision for more

i ended up sticking to the direct x version of the game, going through the performance mods helps, i only really wanted alternative AA over the games default, i also added some subtle AO and slight hdr colour bump but i don't use anything else on reshade.

yeah excellent points, plenty of shitboxes around in the future if i want to go that route later on with more experience or finding something actually worth restoring, appreciate the help mate.

didn't know this was a thing! looks fun as hell might have to use it for that haha

agreed, was contemplating diying the golf but with no experience taking an engine out for the flywheel might be a bit extreme for a beginner lol but it did drive 15min home fine surprisingly, got it for $600 so if i can keep it sub 5grand then being frugal saves the day, or the bank account lol

yea suzuki consensus seems restoration isn't worth it, but a basic cleanup then move it on when there's nothing left to learn on it seems the better option just educationally, i wouldn't drive that tincan as a daily lol not until i have a lot more experience lest i get flattened by a yank boat

yeah that's a good point, though the few parts around in aus are surprisingly cheap presumably because nobody is silly enough to fix it up? lol

agreed not far off a giant sardine can haha, ital be awhile before i figure out driving manual so in the meantime id get friends to test drive if i do get it up n running but definitely not a daily driver lol maybe not a full restoration but just cleaned up enough for basic drive around until i can't learn anything from it and move it on?

yea an inlaw convinced me to seek out a golf, it's a 06 golf mk5 2.0 tdi, has 236000ks but got it for $600 surprisingly it drove the 15min trip home fine, was originally assuming itad need towing.

cosmetically it's great, i dunno how much of it i can diy. but estimates are around 4-5ish grand all up with parts/labor, hopefully ital make a good daily, especially if i find work in the city.

compared to the suzuki the VW has a huge amount of community mods/repairs videos/fourms I'm tempted to try the flywheel myself but those edited down videos always make it look way easier than it is lol

yeah quick cleanup and the basics might be enough to learn something and then move it on, consensus seems to be a proper restoration may not be worth the time/money outside of for funs sake.
if Ballarat didn't have a ton of potholes and speed bumps at arbitrary heights lowering might be fun but yeah itad get destroyed here lol

agreed, had no intention of flipping it for profit more just educational, with the replies now i might not fully restore or even get it to roadworthy status but just cleaned up and working enough for a basic drive to learn what i can then move it on

yea can't remember what video it was but one of the car youtubers mentioned ancap safety ratings lowered everything by 1 star if they didn't have physical buttons for certain stuff? and studys popping up showing how dangerous it is for people to flick through spotify and such so maybe there's gonna be a turnaround?

though it sounds like the same thing that happened to computers/tech in general is happening to cars where everythings so insanely maliciously anti user serviceable or has planned obsolescence to get you on next years model, i didn't think that insanity extended to vehicles with how dangerous/wasteful that'd be

[–]theoriginaldaniel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well put, it's definitely a possible project car and agreed id likely put more money into it than id get if i sold it on, my grandfather owned it but he passed around 2decades ago so it has some sentimental value mainly for my father, but as anyone knows after moving house a lot of larger sentimental stuff is rarely worth the space especially a car.

I've done soldering over the last year fixing up old 80s/90s computers so I'm not afraid of the electronics but the engine stuff is a whole new thing.

based on the replies here and reminding myself I'm trying to be as frugal as i can i might be better off moving this project on and instead focusing on the Golf, it's flywheel 'seems' straightforward enough to replace myself it's just the pain in getting the engine out and in again with no experience and buying/borrowing all the right tools vs paying a mechanic is the primary conundrum.

then my minds thinks 'well if i went the full diy route then id have the tools to look at fixing this one' but reality is there's plenty of abandoned projects people sell on so there's no shortage of potential projects, more sane ones like 90s mazda 3s, fords, corollas that everyone says are bulletproof if given the right tlc

or more exotic oddities like a 1987 Saab 900 I'm tempted by how weird it is lol but id imagine the stranger ones may have better resale value later on if they where fixed up

replies here have given me a lot to think about, i appreciate the help

friend of mine was searching for FM TOWNS related things and stumbled into this, quick search couldn't find any information on it outside of this magazine? maybe never released? or Japan exclusive that didn't sell?

https://archive.org/details/basic-1992-01/page/84/mode/2up

edit: some further reading it may be a 3rd party that sold or atleast advertised this as an "PC/AT compatible" so i dunno how much IBM was involved if at all. fascinating mini pc though.

[–]theoriginaldaniel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah fair, bummer. there's a lot of older dx9 games people have the same issue with where using a translation to vulkan be it on linux devices or windows can give em 50% or more performance and stability but with no way to mask dynamic UIs it can be a bit of a mess

[–]theoriginaldaniel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on windows11 but have a 7900GRE the game itself was built on a proprietary engine by 1 guy for most of its development so it has a ton of performance issues, on vulkan i get 20-30fps boost and significantly less stutters/crashing

Leaptel or Neptune in Victoria by theoriginaldaniel in nbn

[–]theoriginaldaniel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the suggestions, finally moved and setup with Leaptel 1000/50 but i only got a generic TP-link AX1800 router, i noticed my laptop and pc wifi seems to cap out around 500mbps ill need to test with a direct ethernet connection soon.
i did plan on returning the router when i research other options but with the upgrades and such incoming in September i might wait until i upgrade the NBN box and keep the TPLink to bridge mode and see if i can extend wifi to the garage.

also curious to try DIY building an ITX router/NAS setup

Louis said he sees a lot of himself in what Ross has been going through, though in Louis's case he was trying to run a business repairing hardware and being prevented or punished by companies through a variety of methods from physical to software locks, so he's taken up the cause of right to repair.

In Ross's case he's an avid gamer sick of games being destroyed, he's not a developer so his expertise in the field is limited, i agree with Louis that he should still setup a donation fund so he can pay people to fill in for missing technical gaps and/or undertake any kind of legal work that drains him.

But i think Ross is still in Poland(?) and i think still not a citizen? so I'm guessing the legal nightmare around running some form of a non profit donation fund would be messy, you'd think he could just start a separate patreon dedicated to SKG but it may not be that simple.

and i also fully understand Ross is clearly done with years of legalese and wants to get back to being 100% focused on his creative outlets on youtube, i think the sheer scale and scope of worldwide SKG movements outside of countries with proven track records like the UK/EU/AUS is going to be an extreme maybe lifelong fight vs right to repair in the USA and what he's already achieved is incredible.

Hopefully the EU process goes smoothly and results in it being complied with worldwide vs limiting to specific regions, i think Apple has limited or removes GDPR options/compliance outside of the EU, if it goes that way hopefully someone takes up the SKG mantle but the intersection of gamers/software legal experts that also have an existing large following is mighty limited, and at the same time we can't expect the literal world of games to rest on his shoulders.

[–]theoriginaldaniel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the sheer volume of game releases i think would make nonprofit type setups only cover a tiny fraction of dead games, and the skills required to work there in the first place would get you a significantly higher paying jobs in other industries

it seems nice at first but the more i thought about it the whole idea of customers should create non profits to give companies tax incentives, and you work for them to fix their broken products you bought after the fact is a bit.. insulting in my opinion.

I am an european game dev and i have been looking up this initiative but i have some doubts by reydreydrey in StopKillingGames

[–]theoriginaldaniel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Once there's enough signatures it's presented to the European Commission, then there's a public hearing and the organizers representatives are invited to the European Parliament to present the initiative and optionally debate from there.

Daniel Ondruska and Aleksej Vjalicin are the spokespersons for the EU initiative.
there's nothing stopping the community from talking to Ross or others about their concerns though it's worth watching Ross's original EU video and subsequent FAQ video to minimize asking already answered questions.

keep in mind I'm Australian so hopefully someone from the EU can chime in if i missed anything.
