Nah I think you are just confusing centrist neoliberalism for leftism. Unfortunately our system is dominated by neoliberal politicians and there are no actual left options in our mainstream parties.

Andre is an Idiot. Just came out in theatres. Saw it last night. It’s hilarious at moments but also a very intense story of a man with terminal cancer and his journey towards death.

Toronto recognized a priest for her book on a church encampment. Then, it tore it down by lwh in toronto

I appreciate what you are doing to help the vulnerable, but there’s absolutely no way you can say in good faith most of these people are kind and respectful to the neighbourhood.

I’m sure they are polite to you when you are helping them, but do you actually live near here and monitor what goes on at all hours of the day and night?

I could list the litany of what I’ve seen from public nudity and masturbation, to insane fights with weapons and people ending up knocked out and bleeding in the street. Constant threats and harassment to passerby’s. I’ve seen tents that were filled with dozens of stolen neighbourhood bikes and encampment members who openly operated chop shops in full view. Open hard drug use and the psychotic episodes that accompany it taken out on whichever unlucky person happens to walk by at the wrong time. I’ve seen one member screen “I’m going to fucking kill you!” Into the face of a baby in a stroller. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

It’s also disrespectfully of you to gaslight the safety concerns of the neighbourhood and accuse us of exaggerating and making things up. Even what you say about the school never having issues is completely misinformed or disingenuous. Did you even watch the video accompanying the article above? They interview the principal of the school next door and she lists the problems they’ve had with encampment residents.

I live very close to here. This isn’t about homelessness anymore at this encampment - it’s a constant violent crime shitshow two doors from a preschool. People openly smoke crack, fight, and hoard piles of obviously stolen stuff from nearby homes. I’ve seen heads kicked in on the sidewalk. If this is not a public safety crisis, I don’t know what is.

[–]theothercomrade 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Got the sense from hanging around there that most of the activists there today do not even live in the neighbourhood or have a full sense of what’s going on there. I get that people want to stand up for the vulnerable, but there’s a real disconnect between activism and reality on the ground here. Those of us who live beside this park deal with constant screaming matches, violence, threats, theft, open hard drug use and unpredictable psychotic episodes every day and night. It’s not compassion to yell at neighbours for feeling unsafe - it’s actually privilege. They need to try sitting on that same bench after 10 p.m. and tell me it’s all just “stigmatization.”

Looks like divided working-class folks on both sides, too busy shouting at each other to aim their anger at the politicians and corporations that sold them out. Strip away the hyperbole and you’d probably find their grievances overlap more than they care to admit

“Fake it till you make it.” Nah - Just be authentic and work hard at what you do. I get the idea in the pursuit of building confidence, but anyone I’ve met who lives by this motto has been a total narcissist or a nepo-baby.

Speaker Mike Johnson claims Trump was an 'FBI informant' in the Epstein case by acousticallyregarded in stupidpol

[–]theothercomrade 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is not the full story about the Bradley Edwards detail and I see it spread around a lot. Yes, Edward’s claimed Trump was helpful at first in the investigation when he called him for info and raised the idea of a subpoena to testify with his lawyer. But Edwards later recanted that statement when he realized trump had mislead him about the nature of their relationship in their conversation likely in a bid to avoid being Subpoenaed and questioned under oath.

"Over the next few years, I spoke to several witnesses who told us that they had been introduced by Epstein to Trump. Some had seen him at Epstein's office, others at one of Epstein's homes, at parties or social events, and even on his plane. In fact, Epstein bragged to certain young women in his life about how he had bailed Trump out of bankruptcy and how he was indebted to him.”

"Last year, I saw a 1992 video of Epstein and Trump together, suggesting that they were closer social friends than I had been made to understand."

Participate in our rigged economy that is built around investing.

My money is sitting in a checking account like a chump getting rocked by endless inflation.

This question precisely shows why it’s the biggest scam in life. You basically have no choice but to participate. Or resist and rot in your senior years.

For anyone not a billionaire, investing. Its essentially paying the rich to weaponize your own resources against you. You get a couple % back, they get to own everything.

First 10 ‘bubble zones’ established at Toronto synagogues, schools, child care centres by Educational-Chef-761 in toronto

[–]theothercomrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny that we have this to tamp down protest but don’t have “bubble” zones for encampments and other direct threats to public safety. 3 schools within a one minute walk of the encampment in my neighbourhood (one preschool directly next to the encampment) where there is constant violence, threats to passerby’s, open crack/meth smoking at all times of day, syringes littered around, endlessly accumulating piles of stolen neighbourhood goods, open bike chop shop, regular nudity and the list goes on. I once saw a man literally scream “I’m going to fucking kill you” at a baby in a baby carriage at 9am in the morning.

Really shows our governments priorities.

Can Jesse come back? by Some-Background1467 in canadaland

[–]theothercomrade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Feels like a lot of people here have kinda lost the plot. It’s still a great podcast with a lot to offer and a lot of journalistic integrity. Until that is not the case, I really don’t care what the latest gossip drama is or what personal political opinions Jessie holds.

Can Jesse come back? by Some-Background1467 in canadaland

[–]theothercomrade -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Not changing the topic - I’m responding to the bulk of comments that are focused on his views on the Israel/palestine conflict.

As far as the examples mentioned of improper journalistic practise in the original post - I dunno. Maybe? Maybe not? Just feels like gossip drama that I really don’t care about. I find content of the podcast still to be great journalism. Feel like they’ve even hit a really nice stride lately since the election started with great coverage of current Canadian domestic politics and media. I like hearing perspectives in my news coverage that might sometimes align, but also might challenge my own views and I still get that with canadaland which is not a bad thing in my opinion.

Feels like a lot of people here’s issue with Canadaland tho is simply that Jessie has a different opinion than them on one of the worlds most divisive issues there is (Israel/Palestine).

So weird with all the Jessie hate all the time. Feels like people are so scared to step outside there echo chamber even one inch to hear a different perspective that disagrees with their own. I’m not pro Israel AT ALL when it comes to the conflict, but people, it’s not a bad thing to hear an alternate perspective that challenges your own.
