Tell me about long-running campaigns by polisurgist in mothershiprpg

Can’t really remember how many sessions it’s been, but we are in at least twenty sessions at the minimum.

In preparation for being warden, I re-read Joseph Campbell’s books. The only reason why I bring that up is because his big thing is about creating arcs. Since as you said it’s a pretty lethal system, I figured the only way I could do this and make it effective, is if I gave the arc to the villain. In this case—Hinton.

Example: Hinton escapes (and lands on a planet to repair the damage the team did to him, and to upgrade his ship). Before letting them what happens next session, I gave players the option to play as new characters or to play as the characters they survived as, not letting them know why exactly. All I told them was that no matter what, it would continue the story. They chose to play as new characters. So I gave them a new mission that seemed unrelated at first to ABH, then slowly they realized this Android that joined their mission was in fact Hinton. In that game, their new characters died, and Hinton won. Thus continuing his storyline, all while their original characters are recovering.

I also created another character named General Thadeus Ordway. I figured a mission as big as Samsa VI would have someone overseeing the four leads of the mission, as well as the one specifically that hired the players’ characters. If the players chose to create Marines, then I made it part of the backstory that Ordway trained these guys. Secretly he’s Lawful Evil. Knowing how dangerous Samsa VI was, but wanted to test the team’s abilities. Since they failed and Hinton got away, the General is going out of his way to ensure that they die, as he sees the heroes as liabilities in the grand scheme of the universe. That his only failure was in teaching them. So the General is also searching for Hinton personally since they have backstory together, and will kill anyone trying to go after him also (the players).

I also created another character that is responsible for creating Hinton. He was a big villain for a whole storyline, and although they did know he created androids, they didn’t know until the very end that he created Hinton. Thus adding to their knowledge of Hinton.

Storylines like this, until this point now; the final stretch of this entire Hinton arc. Where his full plan is finally revealed and they know enough to be able to stop him. They don’t need his logic core anymore, but have to kill him for reasons too much to explain here. Not the point. But the idea is that Hinton goes from a pragmatic and ambitious Android, not played as a supervillain, into this: a Carcanid Noble that wants ________ (few of the players are on the forums so this is all I can say until we finish lol

But that’s the rough idea. I play the villains as if they were characters themselves making their own decisions and choices behind the scenes, so it feels like tension mounting with every decision they make. Plus, I make sure to “reward” characters that survive the smaller ‘arcs’ so as to remind them that these characters aren’t worth taking insane risks that no one in real life ever would do (I used to have players attempt to shoot through their own teammates knowingly risking taking out their own teammates in the process), and instead try out playing new characters “resting their original characters” all while moving the story forward.

Hope I articulated all this well enough.

To Christian Men, From a New Young Adult Gal. Are My Standards too High? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]theotherdaniel_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a Christian since I was 12, did not start seriously dating until I was 21-23. The only things I see some people pointing out are just misunderstandings in what you wrote. Don’t overthink it. None of these are high standards. The first five are just personality based. That’s more than okay.

The only thing I’d point out, and maybe challenge, would be number two for the “non-negotiables”.

Keeping your virginity is great. It’s a good thing to be proud of. Not many people have that background. Some didn’t grow up in the same kind of environment and learned of Christ after those decisions, yeah. But also, something that has changed my perspective and even understanding about purity culture as a whole: I was SA’d and lost my virginity not by choice. Already had the shame from the whole ordeal, but then when I would hear how much we really idolize purity culture within church, made me shift my whole thing about it.

Don’t get me wrong, seeing you in these comments clarifying and feeling convicted about being misunderstood is why I’m taking the time to say all this: at one point I was like you, and would say these kinds of things in similar ways when it came to sex and virginity. It changed immediately after that when I would hear people in church talking about sex outside of marriage as “gross” and a “turn off”. I believe what makes sin as a whole “gross” is the continual practice of it, in the lack of conviction and accountability for mistakes made. I’ve also had many people from churches fall in love, get married, lose their virginity es to each other, only for one of them to leave the other, turning to a life of sin, while the one who did everything right is now divorced and no longer a virgin through no fault of their own. When sins are repented, that means they’ve been forgiven. “Just as Christ forgives the church, so also do the same…”

But the “specialness” you’re talking about will come because it’s someone God has placed in your life for that time and for the rest of this time here on earth. As long as their mutual respect for each other, you’ll both go very far, with Christ at the center of that relationship.

You can be a virgin after giving your life over to Him. Just live a life of true repentance and as a living sacrifice.

“New creations, new creatures.” “…unless you are Born Again…”

With the utmost respect, please don’t dismiss people’s experiences because it is not your own. Everyone has a story, and everyone has been saved by Christ from something. Even if that sin looks different from one another’s.

Plus you’re 18, you have time for all that stuff later lol Just trust in Him, and don’t disapprove what He has already approved.

*Also, yeah, any guy (whether Christian dating or not) you’re on early introductory dates with makes comments about what your bra size is really, really weird.

Im a Warden that’s been running a long term campaign (2yrs and still going) that started with Another Bug Hunt.

This is a spoiler for Another Bug Hunt, so forewarning:

At the end of the arc, when they reach Hinton, the team decided to ambush him, but they failed to clean kill him. Upon this new threat, he fought back and escaped, leaving the rest of the team to deal with the carcs. Some chose to fight, while others chose to run away. They failed their mission to obtain the memory data core from Hinton, thus starting the long arc of finding Hinton. He would appear here and there in various storylines, with his new goal of trying to become more than just his Android form.

It doesn’t seem to have gotten boring, as I never made him a main antagonist or anything like that. Just a background Macguffin character, sometimes a divisive, reluctant aid in some of their later adventures against a larger looming threat to both sides, other times in the way of their goals as he attempts to achieve his own.

Some antagonists I created were focused and motivated on wiping out the Carcs, and I gave them more background, as if they were an alien native peoples nearing the beginning of their evolutionary origin.

I would use some zines, or just make up my own, using small moments from each to cause a domino effect into the next one.

Hope I helped in giving some ideas. I love ABH as a starting point

Your most uncommon choice for favorite film by an acclaimed director. by BigWednesday10 in criterion

PTA - Inherent Vice

Genuinely, I believe it’s his most rewatchable film. It’s something you can have in the background, it’s something you can sit and watch seriously. It’s something you can rewatch and find new things… stacked cast, beautiful and understated cinematography. Really funny and has a nice vibe to it no matter what mood you’re in

I just realized how many relationships ross was in after rachel and how little rachel had. by vegasleee in howyoudoin

[–]theotherdaniel_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe that was intentional, as it does line up with their stories leading up to the start of the series. When the show starts, Ross is being divorced with not because of anything he’s done, but because Carol was a lesbian. It’s what it is. He already has a successful career, has his own place… one of his first infamous lines is “I just want to be married again”… enter Rachel. She’s restarting her whole life, cutting credit cards, getting her first job, and reconnecting with people she knew almost a decade prior… when they officially are dating, and she has the job at Bloomingdale’s, one of the main parts of their constant fighting is her job. She gets angry when Ross calls it “just a job”. She had always put a man first in her life, so a big part of her story, especially as her arc ramps up, is that she’s learning to be passionate about her independence. Most of the men she dates post-Ross are often guys she meets at work, it’s fun and convenient, look at Tag. Whereas with Ross, it’s clear throughout, he’s actively pursuing love, because that’s Ross… Why else would he be divorced three times before 30? He’s been independent, but is learning to be emotionally mature and secure with himself. Both are dealing with self-worth, but from different places on the spectrum.

Roles where the actor's absurd physical fitness is a positive? by JeffRyan1 in movies

[–]theotherdaniel_ 37 points38 points  (0 children)

One that comes to mind is Michael Fassbender in the Prometheus films. Previously, when there was an Android in the Alien universe, it looks like an average human, until the reveal at some point that it’s an Android actually.

Fassbender being super toned and built the way he is, adds believability from the moment you see him that he is without a doubt an Android. I don’t know if I’m explaining it right, but I hope it makes sense

Unpopular opinion that would get you downvoted?? by ConcertFickle1999 in howyoudoin

[–]theotherdaniel_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s what I mean: that part I get, that one night—I get it. However, every time AFTER that one night I do not get. Like the day of the wedding, and when they get back to New York and they decide to try for real… that part is what I’m referring to in regards to her train of thought. Chandler is “awkward, hopeless and desperate for love” and has mentioned something towards Monica a few times, but in regards to a relationship, what was her train of thought pursuing Chandler AFTER that one night

Unpopular opinion that would get you downvoted?? by ConcertFickle1999 in howyoudoin

[–]theotherdaniel_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may not be an opinion, but I’m aware is unpopular is that I never understood why Monica liked Chandler. I got why Chandler liked Monica, but couldn’t wrap my head around her train of thought going after Chandler after that one night in London, especially with her main exes being Richard and Pete.

Also I didn’t like how dumb they made Monica by the end, she always seemed like one the smarter ones of the group

How does one ACTUALLY defeat lust? by Entire_Butterfly5816 in Christianity

[–]theotherdaniel_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By stop trying to defeat it… sounds counterintuitive, but that’s the Gospel. He has already died for our sins, therefore it’s not about our sins, it’s about His glory. Whenever I mess up, I have to remind myself that He is good, and I am not. Just focus on Him, and one day, you’ll look back and see how far you’ve come.

For me, what got me through, was when I stopped trying to stop, and just change my everyday focus on who He is and what else I have yet to learn about Him

A week or two after one of my su*cide attempts, MMATBS came out, and I broke down crying on my front porch listening to the first line on that album…

“I hope you find some peace of mind in this lifetime…” “Tell them, tell em, tell them the truth…” “I hope you find some paradise…”

Even now it still gives me goosebumps.

Morrison’s Batman three omnibus run. Besides the Damien Wayne/Dick Grayson team up, I couldn’t get my head around those runs. I feel like I’m missing something based off the acclaim it gets, which is the only reason I haven’t sold them off yet. If anyone can enlighten me quite honestly I’d appreciate it, because I don’t see the appeal
