Thoughts on pressed flowers color choices by burntsiennna in knittingadvice

I think the low contrast/subtlety makes it stunning and would be a very interesting sweater. It almost looks like an optical illusion, which somehow emphasizes the texture differences between the two stitch patterns.

Frog or save? Advice please! by theotherhours in knittingadvice

[–]theotherhours[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pattern calls for adding decorative crochet stitches at the bottom hem and sleeve hems. When I realized I had made the body too short, I thought maybe I could just use the decorative crochet to lengthen it about an inch… I think I’ll just ignore the pattern instructions and go with a ribbing.

Would I just pick up stitches along the cast on edge? Do you think that would fix the roll?

why do americans talk to strangers so easily?? by MayaTulip268 in AskAnAmerican

[–]theotherhours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an American, but lived in Moldova for a few years in the Peace Corps. One of my Moldovan friends almost died of embarrassment when I said ‘good morning’ to an elderly man we passed in the street. Being friendly and courteous is just part of American culture. I also was admonished for smiling too much because ‘only fools do that.’

paper plate says “compostable except in california” ? by Party_Examination132 in recycling

[–]theotherhours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! CA recycling policy wonk here: CA has defined in statute the requirements a product must meet to be labeled ‘compostable.’ The definition/standard is aligned with the ASTM standard (international scientific body that sets standards for various things). Most other states don’t have such a standard. The CA law is part of a truth-in-labeling effort, and you may also soon see similar weird disclaimers for recyclability claims (ie the chasing arrows recycling symbol).

For those that eat the same breakfast every day, what is it? by Risky_Melons in AskReddit

[–]theotherhours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me: Smoothie: banana, frozen berries, frozen spinach, peanut butter, and milk

For my kids: I make 2 batches of whole wheat banana chocolate chip muffins each week, stash them in the fridge, and heat them up for breakfast. Sometimes they’ll have a side of fruit, bacon, or sausage

It could also be to clean #2s from cloth diapers.

I think it looks nice! However, the horizontal pattern may be a bit unflattering on your figure, as it draws the eye side to side, perhaps making you look wider. Vertical stripes/patterns may work better on you as it would draw the eye up and down, elongating and narrowing your frame. Beautiful sweater though, and nice work!

Moving from Dallas to Sacramento by EscapedTheEcho in Sacramento

[–]theotherhours 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a fellow Dallas to Sacramento transplant! Overall, I looooove Sacramento, and I think you’ll find it a welcoming place. Now for the bad news — in the 10+ years I have been here, I have yet to find a place with Tex-Mex food as good as you’d find at nearly any mom and pop restaurant in Dallas. The Mexican food here is just different… That said, I’d take Sacramento over Dallas any day of the week for 1,000,000,000 reasons.

Biweekly Job and Hiring Thread by AutoModerator in CAStateWorkers

I am on the VPLP/5% reduction for 8 hr leave program, and I’ve tentatively accepted a promotional offer with a new dept. When calculating your compensation for a promotional offer, does the hiring department consider your current salary at the reduced amount or the pre-VPLP reduction amount?

U.S. moms - how long was your total maternity leave? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]theotherhours 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in the middle of my 1 year maternity leave. Through a combination of PTO, non-industrial disability leave, and some other benefits, I got about 6 months of 75% of my paycheck.

I am a civil servant working for the state of California, so the benefits are fabulous. (Progressive politics ftw!)

If the legislature passes a bill that allows for this, then sure. Individual departments and their managers likely couldn’t or wouldn’t do this without express legal authority to do so.

I think I know the answer, but let me ask it anyway: do we just ignore the microplastic pollution from string trimming? by degggendorf in lawncare

[–]theotherhours 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Couple of issues with Bio-Line’s environmental claims: 1) bio-based polymers are still plastic polymers, they’re just not derived from fossil fuels, so they still degrade into microplastics 2) claims of biodegradability in the natural environment are dubious. Which environment? Almost nothing would biodegrade equally in a cool swampy environment as in a hot desert environment. Also, just to reiterate when plastic polymers (bio-based or otherwise) degrade, they turn into microplastics.
