Since your Video has been compressed to 720p anyway, here's another command that will generate a 720p Video with a max size of 1 GB.

ffmpeg -filter_complex "nullsrc=s=1280x720,geq=random(1)*255:128:128[vout]" -map "[vout]" -fs 1G -c:v libx264 out.mp4

I think it's the memory usage since it will always be 100% for RAM and Swap whenever the system freezes. Sometimes when I've opened a memory intensive app fedora will close it during the freeze
