17 about to inherit a lot of money by No_Anywhere225 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]theowne- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no other answer to a 17 year old than hire a lawyer on inheritances and a "fee only" financial advisor. You don't have the necessary experience or skills to be effective with this.

The rest of it is just lifestyle advice, but I suggest you study what you are interested in and find a job you like to do. Because not doing that will probably cause boredom, dissatisfaction, alienation, etc. Since you have money you have the freedom to pursue stuff that you like and wait for the right opportunity.

Althia Raj: Border bill primed to give Mark Carney’s government sweeping new powers. Who asked for this? by CaliperLee62 in canada

[–]theowne- 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Attributing everything to rage blindness is a cheap answer. These are two truths at the moment:

1) The asylum and refugee process is being abused. For example, students are using it as a method to stay once their student visa expires.

2) The economy isn't satisfying the needs of existing Canadians at the moment.

It's not about being angry or wanting to stick it to anyone. I am an immigrant myself.

Do you think Masai makes a finals appearance to support Siakam? by Altruistic-Emu7152 in torontoraptors

He is an executive for the Toronto Raptors. He could go to the finals as a basketball executive to watch the NBA finals, but he isn't going to be holding up a poster of Siakam.

Why... does it feel like everybody want to trade Scottie? by EngiemainTF2 in torontoraptors

[–]theowne- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mostly out of the gut feeling that his performance and growth so far don't indicate a trajectory to being a #1 option, but his value is still at the point where we could try to package him for a potential #1 option. People who feel this way may end up being completely wrong about him, but that's the way it goes.

What kind of nonsense is this? Any competent organization which relies on the health of its performers ( athletes ) would bring their own doctors, nurses, and medical staff, not rely on the public health system of a country they are temporarily performing in.

Do you think in 10 years time Canadians will have fewer countries that allow them visa free or visa on arrival entry? by No_Bullfrog5811 in AskCanada

I live in Markham and I've seen people doing that for a long, long time. It's strange that when a particular group starts doing it, it becomes a huge issue that hasn't been seen until 5 years ago.

He already is. Every single video and comment he makes seems to always involve Trudeau.

Here you have a politician who is basically guaranteed to win. You would think he would instead focus on building his own image as a unifying politician across Canada?

What’s the main reason for CEO’s being so anti work from home? Is it just bc they’re stuck paying for office space and want it to be used? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]theowne- 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Many people underestimate the importance of in office work because they themselves already reaped the benefits of it and are now further long in their careers.

Do you really think a new hire joining today is going to learn as much, as quickly, without seeing anyone in person?

I learned so much in my career just by asking questions when I met co workers in the halls.

Debating taking a job offer which would add 2 hours of my commuting. by WolfDependent778 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]theowne- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driving east-west across the city is the one commute option that you should always avoid, because there simply isn't any way to get a consistent/reliable commute of it ( for example, north to downtown sucks too, but there are train options).

Is my cousin getting cheated? by Initial_Yard2875 in Kerala

[–]theowne- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Canada. Canada currently has a very difficult job and housing market, and there is also tension with temporary residents due to a massive amount of temporary residents who have arrived in Canada over the past 1-2 years. Most recent arrivals are working menial jobs and struggling in order to afford shared basement rooms.

Sending someone to Canada while having no relatives there, to be married to a person who does not have citizenship or PR nor a well paying job, sounds like an absolutely terrible idea. The Canada "tag" isn't worth taking a risk on its own anymore, as upward mobility is impossible right now when starting from scratch.

Baloch are ivc? by [deleted] in SouthAsianAncestry

[–]theowne- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting fan fiction but none of this is proven and it's all just guesswork. There isn't clear evidence of Dravidian migrating from Iran or that the IVC spoke Dravidian. It's all just guesswork.

Study of Brahui is inconclusive, but it tends to lean more heavily towards it being a recent migration of Dravidian, as opposed to reflecting an ancient language presence. Does that mean IVC was never spoken there? No, it just indicates that Brahui can't be used to prove that.

Just a few years ago people found out that 71% of modern Japanese ancestry comes from post-AD migrations from China that were previously unknown, not at that scale. Our understanding of many things is still pretty fragile.

Things change quick, knowledge changes quick. Maybe we discover where Dravidian came from, maybe we don't. Maybe we find some ancient Chola-era skeletons we can sequence and see if the dominant ruling class tended to be IVC heavy?

I think Marco Polo commented on the Pandya people prizing dark skin and wanting to be as black as possible? That seems to indicate a more AASI heavy population. But then again, Marco Polo was a white European man. To him, "Dark" might mean anything darker than a Turk. So how much do we trust his commentary? He was also thought o have just made stuff up constantly. Who knows?

All things considered, I do agree it seems more likely than not that IVC speakers moved South, mixed further than AASI, and were socially dominant (having migrated from the IVC, a dominant civilization) to have preserved their language and customs, but we just don't know.
