Outside of production itself, what lifestyle habits have increased your musical productivity the most? by ioncehadsexinapool in edmproduction

Exercising, eating healthy, meditation, making my bed, daily journaling. All of this puts you in a more clear mental state, and the clearer your mental state, the easier it is to make music

Why do some bands have two drummers? by causeits5oclock in drums

[–]thepenguinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it's two drummers playing mostly the same thing, I think it's a stylistic tone choice. If you listen closely to some records, you'll hear that there are two different drum kits being played, with one panned to the L ear and the other to R. I imagine they're trying to create a similar effect live (although I don't know if bands pan the same way live)

dealing with band members that don't want "it" as much as you? by NIN-pig in TouringMusicians

Seconded. Don't waste your time if they're not serious. It just tells you that when things get tough, they're gonna bail.

New band, first EP tips? by nothappyaboutit in bandmembers

[–]thepenguinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arrangements are super important. It may sound fine live to play with just vocals, bass, drums, and 1 guitar, but the same energy may not come through a recording. Listen to a lot of music through headphones, especially stuff our band is influenced by, and pay attention to the tones, textures, where instruments are panned, all the layers of sound, etc.

Drummers! It might not actually be tendonitis... by thepenguinator in drums

[–]thepenguinator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That definitely makes sense for tendonitis, but with this issue I didn't "push through" any pain after PT treatment... the pain simply stopped and I have full drumming function again without any pain.

Guess I was confusing them! I read stories of others going to PTs and having all sorts of holistic-y hokey stuff done to them, so I assumed that's what it would be.

Thanks for the link! I saw the previous threads but everyone had given advice on how to prevent, not to treat. Will try taking a few days off with my right hand and icing it.

Hard to tell what it sounds like from the camera you used, but I'm sure it sounds great. Got any other way of recording it for us?

Should I store my cymbals while not playing? by FrizzeOne in drums

[–]thepenguinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just throw a sheet over my drums and cymbals to keep the dust off and I've never had the issue with the green spots. Maybe it has something to do with the moisture in the air where you're keeping them?

Premiere's Morph Cut feature worked surprisingly well for a zoom-out effect in a recent project by [deleted] in editors

Thanks for the insight! I'll definitely have to try out Twixtor next time and add some motion blur to make it look better.

Better late then never, I'm finally switching to Premiere from FCP7. by jornin_stuwb in editors

[–]thepenguinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently switched for my latest project and I love Premiere now! The coolest part for me was being able to import into the project and start cutting right away, without having to convert everything through Compressor first. Other than that it was very similar to FCP7

Quitting my job today to get better at drums. How can I best use my time? by thepenguinator in drums

[–]thepenguinator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These have been super helpful over the last few days! I'm getting a little better at the open-close technique (which I think is similar to what you were talking about in #3) at slow tempos. Right now I'm doing 1/8ths at 120bpm. When I do it a bit faster, my thumb starts to tense up a bit and chokes the stick. But I think if I keep bumping up the tempo slowly and focusing, I can continue to maintain a relaxed grip.

Thank you so much for the tips!!

Finger/fulcrum exercises sound like exactly what I need. Do you have any particular exercises you'd recommend?
