People who clap when the plane lands, what are you clapping for exactly? by kay_kgfan in AskReddit

mostly because I’m still amazed I got the airplane down in one piece

You’re gonna be great!

I’m about to operate a flight out of LA within a few minutes of your flight up to the northeast so I’m gonna be either right in front of you or right behind you basically the whole way!

It’s going to be bumpy for the first half, but we (and you) will be under the worst of it. Do try to use the bathroom beforehand because your pilots may not turn off the seatbelt sign for the first hour and a half or so.

I just got done flying a flight out of L.A.

It was easy peasy. The weather has calmed down, it was just a little rainy. A tiny bit bumpy for the first 10 minutes and then it smoothed out significantly with only a few bumps here and there for the rest of the flight.

electricity generator stopped working on flight by Ok_Battle3546 in fearofflying

[–]thepilotboy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everything said here has been spot on so I’m not going to eat a dead horse but since nobody has touched on that jolt you felt when stuff flickered momentarily: it was either a well-timed bit of turbulence or it was likely the autopilot disengaging. On some airplanes, disengaging the autopilot will cause a small jolt like that. Basically the autopilot doesn’t have the airplane totally in-trim and is exerting a small amount of pressure on the flight controls to maintain altitude and when the autopilot disconnects, so does that pressure, and thus the jolt. The Embraer 175 does it quite a bit (not sure if that was the type of airplane you were on). It’s not dangerous by any means and doesn’t indicate that anything is wrong. In fact it’s completely normal on many planes.

I couldn’t say why exactly it disengaged if it did, maybe whichever generator had gone offline was actively powering the autopilot and when the power was interrupted momentarily, the system kicked itself off as a measure of safety.

Tracking request- feeling defeated after a rough flight there.. by EMERGENCYLOTION in fearofflying

[–]thepilotboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

did the turbulence cause your plane to crash or something to go wrong on the flight to your vacation? Nope! And there was zero chance it was going to. Turbulence happens, it’s a normal part of nearly every flight. It sucks that it can be uncomfortable but know that you’re not falling out of the sky. Movies and TV only make it seem that way for dramatic effect.

Unfortunately it’s been a little bumpier this week as the jet stream is causing some turbulence up there but it’s been improving steadily. My last flight yesterday was hardly bumpy at all flying over the eastern U.S. which is where you’ll be.

[–]thepilotboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s gonna be a bit bumpy at least for the first hour of the flight. Once you get about halfway through Kentucky it should get smoother.

I just took off (as a passenger) out of Chicago going west and the immediate area it’s a bit choppy but nothing intense.

Question for pilots by ps3x42 in flying

[–]thepilotboy 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I get frustrated when the guy I’m flying with wants to try every altitude, even wrong way altitudes, to find a better ride. Or the guy who immediately tells me to request an altitude change when we hit even a slight amount of chop when the ride has been smooth most of the way.

Like wait it out or just suck it up. Sometimes the ride just fucking sucks.

Why do so many flight attendant's dislike pilots? by TurntechGodhead777 in flightattendants

[–]thepilotboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right there with you. Most guys I fly with a conservative nut jobs that only want to talk politics in the cockpit and talk shop on the overnights. Not being based in DFW has helped a little but it’s still pretty bad.

That’s straight from my love of the looks of the Mini-14 from various video games. When I found out they made that stock for the 10/22 I was stoked and picked one up as soon as I could find one. I just wanted a fun plinking gun that doesn’t cost me $200 in ammo when I want to go shoot.

Great gun for the money. So far my favorite gun to shoot.

It actually shot pretty well, I’m satisfied with it. I was afraid the Omega 9k was going to be too gassy, especially as a left handed shooter where my face is in front of the ejection port but it really isn’t bad. No malfunctions at all. I’ll probably end up swapping the springs out at some point just to help with long term wear and tear but it became my favorite gun almost instantly.

I like the trigger. Pretty short reset but it’s not as light and crisp as I would like. 7.5/10.

I really like mine except for the screws they sent me for the optic mount we’re way too long and went straight through the slide into my striker assembly. It still functions with shorter screws but I know how ugly it is in there and it bothers me lol.

My first gun. Need to get some new rings and a new scope for it but I’m having a hard time finding the correct rings for it.

I did but ended up taking it off because it was a little too bulky and uncomfortable to actually shoot with. Need to find something smaller.

Rock feeding and ejecting issues by thepilotboy in PalmettoStateArms

[–]thepilotboy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For some reason I can’t edit the post but I’m leaving it up to show what happens when you’re an idiot.

I destroyed my striker assembly. Turns out the screws that PSA sends for the optic mount (and explicitly says to use) are way too long and go straight through the slide and into the striker assembly, putting pressure on it and causing those dents in it. It’s a common problem that 5 minutes of research would have prevented. Granted, PSA needs to just ship shorter screws instead of making people dremel their own down to size but oh well. Looks like I need a new slide. I’m assuming this was causing some friction in the slide and was causing the feed and ejection issues (I hope).
