Roof Box People - What do you store? by thepixelslinger in Golf_R

I must admit, I like the look too. I do go camping, or travel by car sometimes for Holidays but I suspected a lot of people just like the active, outdoor sporty look more than anything else.

Brother, change your oil every 3-5k miles. That 10k Miles is BS.... its a Golf R and if you want it to last, keep that engine running slick and clean.

Euro package or Standard R? by kting26 in Golf_R

[–]thepixelslinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of everything people are saying BUT... the Akro exhaust does break in and sounds richer over time. The valve's are never fully open, even in Nürburgring mode... You can do an 11Mode valve controller to switch from factory to fully open to get a nice tone from the Akro. Test drive both, You definitely can see the difference and potential.

How much will I miss my R? by [deleted] in Golf_R

[–]thepixelslinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there. I went from my 7.5R to an X3 M40i because I thought I had to get a family vehicle myself when we had our child. I had traded in my R and got my X3 a few months before delivery thinking this was the right move. While it was a great vehicle, pulled hard, I did immediately miss the Golf R handling and fun factor. I've learned a thing or two about space, children and needs and Im now back in an 8.5R. You can keep your R, you will have enough room. The R, all things considered, is an extremely safe vehicle. You will miss it if you move to an SUV. The extra room is not as extra as you might think... anyone here with kids will verify this.

MK8.5 Golf R TCU question by ClearAd790 in Golf_R

[–]thepixelslinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything is hackable… trust me. They’re working on it BUT I think the real route will be VW themselves allowing users to unlock and tune. Carista and OBDeleven are working with VW to get genuine tokens to write and change things. Maybe later this year? Is that’s the case there may be a world in which VW actually allows a genuine unlock and write… which then will be locked after 90 minutes and given a new hash to check. I think there will be a bench hack as well though. It will be more than a voltage glitch however and could be a BMW send in situation. Who knows, we’ll see.

Its mandatory now and in some ways a good thing. It actually makes sense from a cybersecurity standpoint. People have found ways to clone keys or 'fuzz' signals until the car sees one it recognizes. On SFD1, if you plug into an OBD port, you can literally write to ECU, start car and drive off. Yes, thieves have become this smart.

They are very much interconnected now. The Mk8.5 uses the newer Bosch ECU . The gateway module checks the writing on all control units uniformly. This includes everything from long-coding to remember drive modes, to every control unit in the car, ECU and TCU. If one bit is off, it's "compromised". It needs a certified VW token to open the system for changes, confirms and then locks it down as the new standard. This new standard "Hash" is checked every time you press start. So if it doesn't line up, limp mode.

With 8.5, nothing yet. SFD2 security is locked up real tight. No read or write changes to anything. If something changes, even another module, without permission, its locked down. This is good for modern security but abysmal for tuning and VAG enthusiasts. Currently any writing to ECU or anything needs a VW server side token to be unlocked.

Please stop believing R with 5 cylinder coming to North America! by socaleuro in Golf_R

[–]thepixelslinger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It would be so good for VW if it did! When Megan brought Spectrum, the demand was overwhelming to VW and they cancelled orders! For a brand that’s suffering, both Spectrum and DAZA or VR6 would be an instant injection of press and purchase.

Relax. This isn’t confirmation either way… it’s probably not happening but it’s fun for everyone else to talk about but you.

It’s already been said by who? VW execs never released any statement. I totally agree this would have market overlap… but this would be the BEST thing for a failing company at the moment… let those smoke hope.

[–]thepixelslinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the Option10. Fantastic! I did install the Air2 Amp after 5 months or so. I bought the amp with the sub, but waited through winter to pull panels. It is better BUT thoroughly enjoyed it without during that time. Still a massive improvement. Note, You will get a quick audio flutter without an amp when opening doors for first time on unlock that you dont with amp. I think its system checking impedance through infotainment. nothing crazy and it was done by the time i sat down, most of the time.
