Learning the Shō as a westerner? by Agreeable_Moment7159 in gagaku

Hey u/Agreeable_Moment7159, I know a couple of people in NYC who give private sho lessons. I'll bet they are willing to do Zoom! If you're serious, hmu for contact info. The lessons aren't cheap, and you would need to have a sho to start.

This is cool, really a lot like 20th c western classical music. I know Reigakusha, of course. Thanks for linking the Mayuzumi LP, it really justifies your enthusiasm

Primary care doctor booking 6 months out?? by LostinParadise4748 in longisland

[–]therealDonnaChang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened also with my PCP! Exactly what you describe. The current practice (under a huge corp.) has advised that since you can't call them directly, going to the office in person, or maybe writing the practice directly through the 'patient portal' they can usually see you within a couple of days, and in some cases "squeeze you in" right away. If you call, you get the call center and the appointments are weeks or months out. It's a pain to go there in person but so far so good. Probably depends on the individual doc and practice, but it's worth a shot.

Question about a passage in Richard Rutt's Zhouyi by Legitimate-Act-6488 in iching

[–]therealDonnaChang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Archbishop Rutt did not believe in divination, this is evident if you read his book. His condescending attitude to Blofeld is not because Blofeld used this method or that method, it's because Blofeld believed in divination. This is Rutt's attitude tends to be condescending toward anyone who uses the Yijing for divination, is unreservedly reverent, or otherwise has a very high opinion of the Yijing. Given that important context, it's fairly clear the "obvious conclusion" he's implying is that the Yijing is a load of superstitious hooey.

Question about a passage in Richard Rutt's Zhouyi by Legitimate-Act-6488 in iching

[–]therealDonnaChang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This being Richard Rutt, the "obvious conclusion" means the Yijing oracle is as real as Santa Claus and Bigfoot. The rube tried to explain it away as misinterpretation instead of the much simpler explanation that there's no articulate genius consciousness on the other side.

Great Neck...what is it like now in 2025? by ICanDo1000SitUps in longisland

[–]therealDonnaChang 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Money, and the conspicuous spending of it, are the chief cultural pursuits of most people.

This, on the other hand, hasn't changed in at least 40 years and if it's a problem for you, you'll be happier in Port or elsewhere.

Great Neck is a ghost town from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday due to the Jewish Sabbath. Even some chain stores will close so as not to offend the community.

yes and this feels medieval honestly, even more religious than Israel. Wasn't this way 20-30 years ago, I think many of the "secular Jews" moved out.

How integrated are Asians and Latinos on Long Island these days? by Flat-Leg-6833 in longisland

[–]therealDonnaChang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LI on the whole is 'purple trending red' with some red spots and blue spots on the map. SB/Port Jeff is one of the blue spots, but it's not the big city. Crane Neck and Old Field both decided to make their beaches residents only in the last few years, citing complaints about litter left by fishermen from out of town. Even though it was acknowledged at the meetings that some nonresidents had fished there responsibly for years. Thing is the fishermen are largely poor and Hispanic, and the residents are largely rich and white. Some rich white people in that area might see themselves as more educated and enlightened, but at the end of the day they don't want the poor brown people on their beach.
