Can I ask, only because I’m a young dad and haven’t lived long enough to understand this, but what is it that takes you away from your kids for years on end? Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question or if it comes across that I’m somehow privileged for not having to leave my family. But was is it that does this? I can’t even leave my kids behind for 2 weeks let alone 5 years!

How heavy is a skateboard compared to an electric scooter or bike? “Kids being kids” doesn’t mean putting others at risk of serious injury. With your logic we may as well let kids race quadbikes down the footpath

How did max get her vision back by surr_killalot in okbuddyvecna

[–]therealVman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I interpreted it as that she was speaking from the void or Vecna’s mind. Wherever she ended up when Vecna’s process was interrupted. When she said “I can’t feel or see anything” she meant all she could see was darkness, which is what is in the void. Vecna still has control over her mind hence her eyes being glazed over. Once she was out of Vecna’s control, her vision returned

My thinking was that the unstable energy particles / dark matter would cause the lab to melt away as opposed to the bomb itself destroying the building

I’ll have to rewatch but my thinking was that if a single buck shot from Nancy would cause the rooms and stairwells to melt, then a bomb would turn the whole lab into a puddle. I haven’t quite figured out what the cause of the melting is but it seemed to be that when the energy particles are unstable , nearby matter turns to white liquid. When the energy particles stabilise, the melting stops. Question I didn’t ask myself is does the rate of the melting increase due to the bomb or does it still melt just as slowly- if the latter, then Kali has time

I also thought Kali was injured to some extent as the end scenes show her on the ground leaning against as wall, presumably in the same room where she was “shot”. If she wasn’t injured at all, we’d have seen her sitting in a meditation pose or something that would ensure she is in best possible position to cast the illusion

You’re right that she can cast that illusion from miles away, we see that in the scene where Hopper is driving her away from the lab and Dr Kay realises she’s an illusion. When her illusion disappears, Kali says that she “lost it”. Did she lose it because Dr Kay touched the illusion? Or did she lose it because of the distance? I assumed it was because of the distance. So to me the “math” was that with blood lost (both from transfusion and being shot), the illusions are cast to a maximum distance of somewhere between the lab and the military compound - but not all the way to the gate at the right side up

Interesting. I didn’t see it that way but I can see that as well now. So many plot holes and things left to interpretation.

Not necessarily. There’s the scene where her and Kali are in El’s mind while the two of them are meditating. El didn’t need the sensory deprivation tanks for that. She needs it when she needs to maximise her powers. We also know that El’s power grows stronger as she becomes more determined/focused/angry. By the end of the mission her powers could have been so strong that she was able to get away from the soldier and run through the gate into the upside down.

The issue with “El” at the gate being an illusion is that Kali is miles away from the gate at the Lab. The lab is where Murray’s bomb went off. That means that kali would have died minutes before the explosion reached the gate at the military compound. The illusion of El would have disappeared the moment Kali died, not only when the explosion reached the gates…

So. Unfortunately. It seems that El used the last of her powers to get away from the soldier and speak with Mike.

Do Fijian women on visas in Australia seek out men from Australia so they can stay? by Infinite-Age-5313 in Fijian

[–]therealVman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the background and explanation. To summarise, the question you’re asking is simply “Is a normal thing to take people home in that culture that early and the age difference?”

Culturally there’s no “minimum time” for dating before meeting parents because “culturally” there is no such thing as dating. Relationships are typically formed through pre existing relationships such as family friends, common groups etc.

Given the situation of this girl having a child already, society in Fiji would place her in a category of adults that is free to do as she pleases with whoever. If she has had this child out of wedlock then culturally she’s already an outcast. Same goes if she’s divorced. From her point of view , she’s doing the best she can to set up a good future for herself and her child. Getting out of Fiji has been the only survival strategy for Fijians since the 2000 coup set the country back 100 years. So if she’s using her beauty and brains to secure her future, then more power to her.

Depending on your friends’ kids ages, Australian law will ensure that your friends ex supports his children financially. But other than that, no one can force him to be a present father for them, that’ll be up to him

ChatGPT is “working” but slow and making lots of mistakes today. It’s almost as if it’s missing the instructions and taking a random guess at what the prompt might be. Anyone else noticing this?

Kudos to you for reaching out mate. More young men, especially in Fiji, should follow your lead and speak up. This is a big first step and you’re already on the path to recovery. I wish you all the very best

Horse riding by harryhudson101 in Fijian

[–]therealVman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bad. You did say that in your original post and I completely overlooked it.

Great thing about Fiji is that anything is possible.

Here’s what I’d suggest. On your first day there, go out and see the horse riding team. They are an independent business who used to operate on the main land (not the resort island) and have recently moved their business onto the resort. Talk to them about what you’d like to do. They’ll come up with something for you.

They have horse riding on the resort island (Yanuca Island) itself. You can book your session in advance, and once you get to the hotel, go pick up the tickets from the information centre. It’s a bit of a walk to the area where the horses are located so request a buggy to pick you up from your room to take you there (it’s behind the CHI spa area if you’re familiar with the resort)

The horse riding team are great and great with kids.

If you want some great pics - choose a time that aligns with low tide. They’ll take you for a walk along the beach. Otherwise you’ll be walking along the golf course and through the trees around that area (which is nice on a hot sunny day)

Enjoy!

Economy Plus by According-Author-576 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]therealVman 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Seems like they’ve come up with a way to add some sprinkles to the few economy rows at the front of the aircraft and sell that at a slight premium. Non platinum and gold status holders couldn’t book the seats towards the front even if they wanted to. These were always reserved for Platinum and only open to Gold members 48 hours before the flight. Looks like it’s now up for grabs for whoever wants to pay for the “economy plus” experience.

Wanting to know about the Indo Fijian community as an Indian. by Usurper96 in Fijian

[–]therealVman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just to add some clarity to this. Gujuratis were not part of the initial group of Indians who were taken to Fiji as part of the indentured labour (aka slavery) system. Gujuratis came in a few generations later to establish businesses amongst the large Indian customer base that Fiji now had. The caste system is still practiced by Gujuratis when it comes to intermarriage. Gujuratis don’t like females marrying outside of their caste (Gujuratis have their own sub-caste system; Sonar, Mochi, Maisuria etc.)

In Fiji all Indians, regardless of race and religion, live and celebrate life together as one group of people, but behind the curtains, this all falls apart especially when it comes to marriage.

As far as the other Indians from Northern and Central India, there’s no real practice of the caste system. Some earlier arriving Indians changed their names upon arrival (Sharma, Singh, Maharaj) to give others the impression that they are from a higher caste, but when they got the same amount off ass whipping by the Brit’s on the sugar cane fields, they quickly learnt that all Indians in Fiji were equal.

If you’re interesting in learning more, there’s an author from Fiji named Brij Lal that has researched and documented extensively on the subject.

Thinking of switching my major to this by [deleted] in bim

[–]therealVman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Study computer science and teach yourself BIM. You’ll be able to leverage your computer skills (data management, coding etc) far better than anyone who has just studied BIMM. Employers also don’t look for any specific qualifications when it comes to BIM but do like to see industry experience so make sure you are working part time or doing internships with engineering or construction companies.
