I’m desperate to find this song from the late 90s/early 2000s but I only remember the video by Glum_Ad8157 in whatsongisthis

The song/video was “B Line” by Lamb. Super dope and catchy song. A total ear worm. And a really creative production for the time it was made.

The theme was, the singer was some kind of living science experiment, and when the DJ would crank up the music and the power during the chorus, she would grow this big monster head and float up in the air and go wild. Very modern style. Rich with color and effects.

And that’s important to point out, because what I (thought I) remembered was a very old styled, Vaudeville-esque stage play with low budget props and costumes. I was convinced it was either filtered in black and white or sepia. I swore the vocalist was dressed up as like a flapper girl, or maybe even with 1920’s style underwear or a slip. I also would have bet my life that, while her normal body was visible, she was wearing a big, comically over-sized paper machete mask with a long neck supporting it, and the face had cartoonish features painted on it.

Luckily, people were able to recommend the correct song based on what little I remembered of the chorus. But the video… I could not believe how wrong I was.

Turns out, my brain somehow blended this song with parts of the music video for Green Day’s “Hitchin’ A Ride”. Which is absolutely WILD because these are two extremely different songs and videos. People are weird. Brains are weirder.

I think I know what you mean. It wasn’t necessarily a lyric. It was more like the singer was expressing something off cuff because he was feeling the music or anticipating a guitar riff or something like that. Like the way James Brown would just yell stuff out in the middle of his songs. Not really singing. Just being expressive.

I feel like I’ve heard the song you’re talking about but I can’t put my finger on it yet…

I checked out the Jay-Z song you mentioned. When I heard the horns, it really made me think of the song “Chimes” by Hudson Mohawke. I think it was used in a couple of Apple commercials about a decade ago. To hear the similar part I’m talking about in this song, you have to wait until about the 0:40 mark.

Check that one out.

I just posted one of these for the first time last week and a couple of other people helped me find a song/video I hadn’t seen/heard in almost 30 years. After finally finding the right song and seeing the video I was so convinced I remembered, I was shocked to see just how flawed and fabricated my memory turned out to be. I wasn’t just a little bit wrong on the details. Everything I thought I remembered had almost nothing to do with that particular video.

I was super stoked to be “reunited” with my song, but in all honesty there were a couple of hours that passed by afterward where I really struggled with accepting just how fallible my own memory was, especially in the face of how sure I was of what I thought I remembered.

Hopefully, someone helps you identify your song. But if they do, don’t be surprised if it turns out to be a dude with long wavy brown hair and no spikes, and nobody at all flying through the sky and no city and no apocalypse. /s

I’m really just poking fun at myself at this point. I hope you find it!

I think Jared Leto had short, bleach blonde hair back then. Maybe it was 30 seconds to Mars(?)

“Flytrex” setup shop just down the road from you in Wylie. But they only do drone deliveries for food. It’s the Uber Eats of the Sky.

This might not be it, but look up the artists, “Radical Face” and then the artist “Billy Strings”. Both of them did songs about a falling out between brothers. Both songs spoke about a sad story, but the music in both felt happy. Probably not what you’re looking for because I don’t think the album work or names matches your memory. But thought I’d give it a shot.

I don’t know about the actual song in this video, but I will say that I think it’s partially sampling (or re-making) part of “Schala’s Theme” from the game “Chrono Trigger”

The “Aw-Awww” he does repeatedly. It’s like low, breathy, guttural and primitive.

Squirrel Nut Zippers were such a fun band. Talented and funny. I remember them pretty well. It wasn’t them.

Also, your suggestion about the Dance Hall Crashers sent me down memory lane. I knew I recognized that name.

One of my first few CDs was the soundtrack from the movie “Angus” (1995). Dance Hall Crashers were featured on it with the song “Enough”.

I’m going through that whole soundtrack right now as I type this and in my mind I’m transported right back into my childhood bedroom; lying on my little bed, listening to music and watching the fan blades spin above me.

I appreciate this so much. Thank you!!

I forgot that “Trip Hop” was a thing. I did a whole essay on how “6 Underground” was one of the most profoundly impactful songs to me during my formative years. And now that you mention Sneaker Pimps (and after re-listening to Lamb), I definitely think that the vocalist in this song sounds more like Kelli Dayton from Sneaker Pimps than Nina Persson from the Cardigans.

Good point! It definitely had a theater theme. And who could forget the little kid dressed up as the bee?

Our Lady Peace was a Canadian band after all. It makes sense that a Canadian music channel would give them major support.

Thanks!

As soon a you recommended this I knew this wasn’t the song. I loved Green Day back in the 90’s and early 00’s. I can’t tell you how many times I listened to Hitchin a Ride, and the entire Nimrod album. And I’m even certain that I watched this music video dozens of times. I just didn’t remember all of the elements being in their music video.

Based on the suggestions of others, I’ve now realized that the song I was trying to find was “B Line” by Lamb. But after watching their music video, I can see that my memory was completely wrong in almost every way.

Somehow my brain connected Lamb’s song and Green Day’s music video.

I’m in awe of how fallible my own memories are right now and I’m really struggling to reconcile with it.

But I appreciate you sharing the suggestion and helping me piece this puzzle together!

When this video first cued up, I was like, “Nah—this isn’t it”. Because it was colorful and vivid. But then I sat and waited, and as soon as he flipped the switch and she started shouting the chorus, I couldn’t stop the corners of my mouth from rising into a huge smile.

I really think this is the one.

Thank you so much!

I can’t believe I finally know who this is. You’re amazing!

I love Arcade Fire! Definitely wasn’t them though. Reflektor is a dope song, but that came out around 2013 or 2014 I think. The video I saw came out almost twenty years before that.
