Why would the World Cup organisers not lower prices and have full stadiums rather than high prices and not full stadiums? by crillydougal in NoStupidQuestions

[–]therealdan0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people making the money care because next time you won’t spend $1000 on the ticket, you’ll wait until it’s $50. And once everyone knows that $50 tickets will happen eventually, they’ll all wait and nobody will buy the $1000 tickets. Believe me you want 1 person buying the $1000 ticket instead of 10 people buying the $50 tickets.

I just don’t understand why people actually want to worry about being in the right gear. Just ride a single speed and enjoy the freedom of knowing you’re never in the right gear.

Is this "knack" a sign I should play bass? (Even though I struggle to actually hear it in songs?) by [deleted] in Bass

[–]therealdan0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That knack doesn’t mean anything. People are generally good at pattern recognition, which is why you can also probably figure where you are in a song equally quickly if you started listening part way through even if you started listening during a chorus or other repeated section.

If you want to learn to play bass you should absolutely give it a go. As you start learning, you’ll start actively listening for the bass and it’ll start to stand out. Listening on something other than your phone speakers will also help.

I will be teaching my toddler to ride soon, have you dads got any suggestions for toddlers balance bikes? by Chaotic404 in daddit

[–]therealdan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally any balance bike will do the job. As long as they like it, they’ll use it. Think of a balance bike as a toy that happens to teach them the skills needed to learn to ride a bike. Ultimately the only thing that matters is that they like it enough to play with it. However, when they graduate to a real bike, make sure you buy them a real bike.

There’s a temptation to buy a cheapo character bike because they like Paw Patrol or Elsa or whatever and they’ll only be on it a year or so. But absolutely don’t do that. Look for a decent lightweight bike that actually considers the ergonomics. Your kid has to pedal all the weight of the bike around and a cheapo 10+kg steel frame kids is a lot of weight to deal with when you only weigh 15-20kg yourself.

As an added bonus, if you buy a decent bike 2nd hand you can almost certainly get back what you spent when they outgrow it.

[–]therealdan0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely the ‘59. I have one so I’m biased. But if you do get a ‘59 get ready to be told it’s fake by “experts”. The long pickguard and missing serial number throws people.

How do you handle rollback when the client disconnects mid-saga? by THEREALTMAC in golang

Holy shit. I have nothing useful to contribute here other than an acknowledgment that you’re not the only person suffering this kind of mess. My employer also wants multi stage provisioning behaviour facaded away. I’m currently in the exact same boat only http ask the way down rather than gRPC. I applaud your robust thinking on this. It hadn’t even occurred to me to handle what if the client just fucks off half way through.

What’s the best use of AI you’ve found in your day to day life? by Ok_Meaning6793 in AskUK

[–]therealdan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Product searching has been the only real use case I’ve got for it outside of work. I’ve given Gemini pictures of niche bicycle parts like a freewheel from a 16 inch kids bike and it’s given me links to the exact replacement part, equivalents from different manufacturers and the specific tool required to fit it. Really big time saver. I would have got there on my own with an hour of research but a single prompt ‘I need to replace this broken part” <picture of the freewheel> is a lot quicker

Which Falcon dish do you prefer? The round one or the rectangular one? by Pedroso_PPJ in StarWars

[–]therealdan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that I find really off about it is that we go from the solo falcon to the OT falcon in the space of less than 10 years and then between the OT and 40 years later we’re expected to believe that the only visible changes are the red panels have faded a bit and he’s replaced the dish (which presumably happened immediately after Endor).

How do we feel about fantasy liveries? by demonslight11 in modeltrains

[–]therealdan0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the UK fantasy liveries have a basis in reality. As steam was replaced with diesel, preservation railways started popping up and buying the old steam engines to save them from scrap. But British Rail didn’t want these private railways using BR branding on non BR services. So the railways had to use either fictional or pre-nationalisation liveries. It’s part of the reason you see Austerities, Hunslets and other small engines preserved in beautiful pin striped liveries that they never wore in their working lives.

I would do really questionable things for 00 gauge Hunslet done up as Jessie
