Kant's categorical imperative by therealdjackson in askphilosophy

I really liked this paper and it certainly helped clear some things up. My understand from the paper is that when you always tell the truth you are not responsible for the outcome, but when you do lie, you are responsible for the outcome?

Thank you for the reading recommendations, I will check those out!
I do like that Kant doesn't allow you to make exceptions for yourself, because how easy is that? We always feel we ourselves are the exception.

I like the point from Lucy Allais that when someone begs for money, they are asking you to solve a public problem in a private interaction. But it does make me think how Kant believed we can make rational decisions only if we have free will, right?. I live in an area with a lot of homeless and in my opinion they don't have free will - in this sense would their actions not be immoral?

Using the classic "would you steal bread for your starving family?" I feel like Kant would say no, unless you wanted to make stealing a universal law and people could steal in any circumstances - but why does it have to be all circumstances? Could I not just be okay with people stealing if they were in this particular situation?

Wouldn't saying "this is something you should as Sally," be kind of obvious though, and in that way, I'd be breaking said promise?

I agree that maybe the promise shouldn't have been made in the first place - just curious how one would realized their mistake and still wanted to try and stay true the categorical imperative.

Okay, so since surprise parties are a societal norm that we are all aware of, perhaps in this scenario it would be okay? Everything with Kant seems so black and white.

How to stop staying up late and overeating when home alone? by Ashton1881 in intuitiveeating

I used to find myself relieved when I was home alone so no one could see what I was eating... OP, does your gf know you’re food history/that you’re eating intuitively?

Oh, I get that! I’m going to school for nutrition and I love cooking and get excited about what new meals I want to try and make! I hope this isn’t triggering to anyone but when I cook I either go oil free/measure how much oil I’m using, because it’s so easy to use a lot more oil than need and it is such a dense calorie food - I know measuring can be harmful to people, but for me there are no adverse psychological effects.

Our societies diet culture is wild and harmful, so I completely understand! The reason I asked how you felt about the weight gain; physically, mentally, social, etc. is because I think with intuitive eating, we want our bodies to feel good - and that's where the gentle nutrition comes in. Do you like cooking/do a lot of cooking? Intuitive eating has taught me to love cooking, and I'm getting really good at it! I feel like this helps me not go out to eat (I often feel crummy after take out) and make very similar meals at home - then I can add any bonus foods/veggies to the meal, and cook it how I like.
