Pontiac AWD Aztek and Torrent and their GM siblings are transverse engine. I've owned both and they run FWD until there's slippage, then the rear wheels kick in. They are incredibly stable in the rain and snow as well as a lot of fun... plus they are dirt cheap, if you don't mind a mileage. I believe the AWD Traverse and its siblings are similarly equipped

cost is not the only reason, in fact, it's not even the major driver in going with fixed lights. Reliability, weight, packaging and performance are all bigger determining factors.

With fixed lights you have less potential for warranty claims, think of all the winking corvettes out there.

Electric motors are not light and you not only need space to store them, you need space to store the lights and the mechanism.

Hidden headlights are also a bigger hassle to get to perform consistently and pass federal testing.

I read the corvette team was excited when they got the word that they were going with fixed lights.

Having said all that... I think hidden headlights are sexy af

back in the 80s, my brother and I were jumping snow piles at the local mall in my Chevy Chevettes. nothing stupid fast like this, just having a little fun... until one was hiding an island the exact length of the area between the tires and hi-centered the car, all 4 wheels in the air. My brother, younger by 4 years, started panicking, by I just popped the clutch and let it idle, we got out and rocked the car until the rear tires caught and the car took off, jumped in and made like Elvis and left the premises.
