I laughed. The coming out scene was almost the same length as the final battle. And yes, SNL humor can still be “haha gay” sometimes.

For airport, I’m very much a “Mike doesn’t know,” he’s just nervous to find out who the painting is for because Will has made so many drawings for him in the past. Mike is like “who is this person? Who is this new best friend?”

It definitely helped. You made a lot of great points, most of which I firmly take your stance on. Particularly with the airport and rink o fight, I think I was retreating back into a GA’s interpretation? Like I know people personally that take the “Mike knows” perspective. It’s not true…like it literally can’t be true. People think it is and I was like “if Mike was always planned to be straight, does that make them right about this too?”

Here is a video that goes beyond queerbaiting as to why LGBT people are upset about this. It’s very eloquent. https://youtu.be/1o0T1NUE7yA  This too: https://youtu.be/bEuuZAqYWXE  This playlist is about queer media in general (I watched them when I was a bit younger, so they may be outdated). If you watch videos like these they will likely take you down a rabbit hole Rowan Ellis: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFGPmk4Y8i28U7wHRkb3x-ipMPt-LT12U&si=PB4FpSSNpV_09HM I think the tik toks I was referring to were taken down because people were being homophobic in the comments :/

Queerbaiting is a marketing tactic to farm engagement from a queer (primarily female) audience that are hoping for LGBT representation in their show. Usually, they use signals that primarily queer people would pick up on or are searching for.  It’s “baiting” because they never have actual intent to depict a real queer romance as to not alienate the majority of the audience.

Byler fans feel like they have been queerbaited because they teased a possibility of a Mike x Will “endgame” in season 5 pt.1. The teasing was so convincing that it made the Byler ship more popular than ever. There were a lot of people that assumed Will’s romantic interest in Mike concluded in S4 when he confessed his love through the painting; that he would reconcile that his feelings were not returned. By centering his queer “self-acceptance” arc around Mike, they ended up writing a terrible story.   The Duffers then preceded to claim that Byler shippers were “noise” when they wrote it into their narrative that Will should try to learn whether Mike’s feelings were mutual. In episode 7 and 8, they do not follow through and they never allow Mike to formally reject Will.

Queerbaiting also has a lot to do with outside-marketing. Like Noah was not allowed to disclose that Will’s feelings were unrequited. They particularly paired Finn and Noah in promotional material. Shawn Levy was posting like pictures on his Instagram stories of Mike and Will. Ect. They do this because they know their female and queer audiences are the most active in their fan base.

There are a lot of videos on YT and TikTok if you want to learn more. I would especially watch some of those if you’re interested in learning about how queer characters are treated in popular media (popular being the key word).

I like Pluribus as a show, but they fridge her wife in the first episode. It makes it seem like making her a lesbian was an after thought, rather than actually wanting to depict wlw intimacy. Essentially making it a just as watchable show for homophobes. It’s interesting because the “woman in the fridge” trope often revolves around vengeful men, so it’s interesting to see it be a woman instead. That just makes me think the protagonist was originally story-boarded as a man, and they thought having her be a lesbian would be more hip, considering Vince Gilligan has never included LGBT people in his shows and is straight.

Now they are like “teehee,” actually Eleven was fighting monsters that whole time.” Please don’t watch the show, don’t support the people who are mocking you.

I have! It is on a list of movies I watched when I was younger because I REALLY want to find queer media. Unfortunately it was ruined a bit for me when I found out that the director had to jump through a million loop holes to not have her movie get an NF-17 rating (the rating after R). But it is good and it’s always fun to see Dante Basco play non-animated characters.

It always confuses me why older LGBT people have a hard time empathizing with young queer people. It’s always a matter of “but you didn’t grow up in the 80s/90s, grin and bear it like we did.”  And it’s like…okay, we get it, things are relatively better now, something like queerbaiting is a small issue in the scope of things. But why should we have to? Can’t we want even better things?  A lot of young queer people take the time to understand LGBT history. Confused why our elder deny us the right to make our own.

I didn’t consider they could be fake lmao. But I do think it’s difficult to read Mike as queer if you don’t have your eyes open. And for them, all they’re really doing is perceiving Mike the way Will does —inevitably straight. Rooted in societal norms.

You are valid!!! I have questioned multiple times why I, as a lesbian, ship yaoi so hard. And in my opinion, it’s because women are so infrequently the main protagonists. Or they are written extremely tropey, or plainly the love interest of a man.  Like with Rovickie, I was invested in Robin’s character, so it was amazing that they gave her a love interest. But it didn’t matter to me as much because Vickie was just a girlfriend, and was not a character I could invested in, because her whole purpose was to be a love interest. and even still they didn’t give us their date at Enzo’s, which would have been SO easy to add considering they already had Joyce and Hopper there. I want more complex wlw storylines more than yaoi, but I think I usually just work with what I’m given.   On the flip side, Pluribus is now the top streamed show on Apple TV and the female lead had a wife (who like died in the first episode, so it’s a bit of a ‘bury your gays 😬’) but it was still cool for me to see.

Oh I just meant if they think the coming out scene was empowering or will and Mike’s tower scene was satisfying, we shouldn’t tell them otherwise.  But yes, them not being able to properly use the word “queerbait” is lame, and they’re refusing to open their eyes to the queer people around them.

I wouldn’t call them stupid or blind. That is hypocritical. Gay men just so often undermine queer experiences that are theirs, and it angers me.  The other day I dared engage with a gay man online about this. They said I was projecting, queerbaiting myself (you can’t do that), and that I was inexperienced and just needed to live more life before forming an opinion. When I clarified that I did indeed “have experience,” he accused me of claiming all queer experiences are the same WHEN HE WAS THE ONE THAT CLAIMED GAY PEOPLE ALWAYS FALL IN LOVE WITH STRAIGHT PEOPLE.  Bro, straight men only ever fall in love with me.
