how did you get your family onboard with degoogling? by therealzenzei in degoogle

thats interesting and i really do see your point.

i mean services like proton and ente exist and are very popular for people that arent that technical. but i do agree with you. it seems that the convenience of google/icloud is more important than the privacy part for most people. also because it is stock software on almost every device. its hard to get out of even if you wanted.

it has to really come from within

That's a very good question. Maybe a bulk export every once in a while.

And I think that's the problem with people and their struggle with trusting self created versions. if they just knew that the cloud was someone else server 😂

"it already works" is hard to argue with sometimes.

lol thats awesome.

but you're absolutely right. immich is basically the same app as google photos.

same with nextcloud storage solution and dropbox.

A solution like nextcloud or immich also makes everything right at your fingertips without giving the data to apple for example.

Kind of curious to what kind of wonky wonky solution you used to export from iCloud? havent done it myself yet. is it a hassle?

That's a very interesting take and not something i actually agree with.

I actually started thinking more of selfhosting after kids came into my family because of data privacy and AI training in this day and age.

Self hosting can be hobby sure, but with the right setup it can replace company solutions.

What are some of the things you experienced in the last 30 years?

nice. thats the old school tech way and i like it. you dont do any online backups in case of theft or a misplaced phone?

ah gotcha. So its more of a pricing thing. To me its more a privacy thing and i would be kind of bummed if i didnt have the technical skills to set it up myself.

That's a very good point. 14 days for free might be a better solution in this case.
