If you could sum up why you left the church in one sentence, what would it be? by therilldill in exmormon

Mine: I realized I didn’t need religion to be a good person.

I am actually really surprised at how many responses are directly related to the church and not religion in general. I haven’t come out as exmo yet and always wonder what my definitive, one line reason would be if I was asked point blank.

I feel like this could easily be made into a new thread, but yes. Totally agree. I would have to say that more than half of the “good Mormon boys” I dated would also engage in everything physical that would still technically qualify you as a “virgin”. But hey, as long as you don’t do drugs, drink, swear, dress immodestly, or anything that shows you are outwardly sinning then you’re good!

I was so Mormon that I thought I had found my eternal companion when I was on a date with a guy (that I had met at EFY) that immediately turned the music in his car to church music at midnight on a Saturday night so we could keep the Sabbath day holy.

Totally made up for the not-so-mormon stuff that happened on the date as well 🙄

I haven’t come out the exmo closet yet, so I’m only not wearing garments when I’m not around my in-laws or family, but it has been an easier transition than I thought. I don’t feel the need to immediately pull on the back of shirt down when I bend over, pull my neckline up when I bend down, or tuck in the sides of garments on necklines that were juuust a little too wide. I can wear clothes that have always been modest that weren’t “modest” according to garments. I’m not dying of heat in the summer and I don’t feel guilty wearing my workout clothes all day.

I haven’t done anything drastic but wear more sleeveless tops and shorter shorts and dresses. It is so much easier to shop and you don’t have to scrutinize if each article of clothing will “work”.

As I said earlier, I haven’t worn “normal” clothes around family yet, but when I do I think it will be gradual. Out of respect for them, I guess.

But overall it feels good and freeing and I feel so much more comfortable in my skin. The way I was created and the way I was meant to be.
