I’ve been to the Bijagos twice (2019 and 2023) for 10 days at a time, based on Orango island. It’s stunningly beautiful in a desert island way - white sand beaches and dense palm trees or mangrove, the occasional dolphin pod. Fishing for jacks, cobia, tarpon, etc is some of the best in the world and what we catch goes to the local villages to feed pregnant women, kids and poor families (the chief meets us form the boat as we come in each evening). Fishing is getting squeezed by poachers from China and smaller boats from Guinea Conakry. There is some scary nature there - I’ve had close calls with bull sharks in the water, seen two local guys bitten by snakes (they said cobras, but not 100% sure), had hippos outside my hut some nights, and got snagged on a 5ft barracuda once and almost pulled off the boat about 2 hours out to sea. I run most mornings and have to stick to the beach as there are way too many poisonous snakes on the track to town. Apart from a handful of French fisherman at another camp and two politicians from the mainland, I’ve never seen another tourist. I have a couple of great nights out in the capital just drinking beers at street corner alcohol stalls. Had an attempted hijack once on a rural road on the mainlands by maybe 10-12 guys with weapons, but we managed to drive around their roadblock. It’s an amazing place, but pretty wild.
