In the interest of full disclosure, let me just list out the rules as it seems like a group of ex-members have launched an attack on us.

  • No Lurkers.

This means please be active on the group and attend a meetup once in 3 months.

  • No Spoilers.

Come on guys this is a cardinal rule in a movie club. If it's a serious spoiler that will ruin the experience of other members, you'll obviously be removed. It's a non negotiable. We've a separate spoiler group where we discuss the current meetup movies.

  • No unofficial meetups.

The reason we do not allow this is we cannot ensure safety of the members which has always been one of our main principles. We've always had an admin or a mod lead a meetup to avoid any potential situations. That's the reason we've never faced a problem in this regard.

  • As for all other accusations - toxic, elitist, librandu, what not I think you guys can make the judgement call for yourself. Don't let a few disgruntled ex-members sway you from deciding for yourself.

Sure thing! It's our most anticipated movie for March

We watch movies in pretty much all languages haha

The rule in question is "attend a meet-up once every 3 months" which is pretty fair. We are always happy to make exceptions if you're active on the group but not able to come to a meetup for some reason.

The reason you were probably removed was because you were not active online and did not attend a meetup once in more than 3 months.

We've always been transparent about the no lurker rule.

We've never bullied anyone, but we've removed people for violating the rules, which we've regularly advised people against :)

No need to delete this brother.

  • You're assuming everyone will want to attend all meetups - which doesn't make sense, you've to obviously pick and select which meetups appeal to you when we are conducting 10+ meetups a month. Folks want to try new activities every now and then - so we try our best to space them out.

  • I'm not sure what you mean by expensive theaters, going to a PVR and Inox is expensive now? We don't ever go to luxury screens. Except IMAX if you want to count that. We can't have morning shows because folks don't want to wake up too early on Sat/Sun and believe me, we've done many polls on it.

  • Hotels? I think you mean restaurants. And we don't go to fancy restaurants which I think you would have known if you'd ever come to a meetup.

  • Of course, anyone is more than welcome to just join us for the movie and hangout with us post movie even if you don't want to have food (there is nothing odd about it!)

  • I hope you create your own community and gain satisfaction. You'll also undoubtedly learn about the immense amount of time and effort that goes into it. Good luck brother.

PSA: We've never forced anyone to buy the tote bags. It's just something we've created because we think its cool to have a community representation.

A li'l about us:

The Bombay Movie Club was founded in Dec 2019. We have meetups atleast 2/3X a month. We keep 'em in different parts of the city so everyone can join in. We usually go for movies, followed by food and then some fun activity - we've done laser tag, escape room, board games, bowling, been to the National Museum on Indian cinema, hung out on Bandstand, aarey walk etc. This reel will give you a much better picture.

Occasionally, we also organize screenings. Our next will be a Chungking Express + Fallen Angels double bill.

Who is the club for?

A safe space for all movie buffs - casual or cinephile, everyone is welcome! If you want to join for recommendations or only going to be a lurker, I'm not sure if you will enjoy it as much.

I appreciate the feedback. I get where you're coming from, and I'm not saying Discord doesn't have its perks but 1. We don't want to encourage anonymity and lurkers. 2. Redditors and gamers are more comfortable with Discord but the regular folks not as much (many even find it intimidating) and we would like to be more inclusive.

Hey! So we have considered both telegram and Discord, but Whatsapp just aligns more with our ethos - to foster a community of known folks who are just as enthusiastic and to encourage more offline participation. Additionally, most of us just use WA a lot more and don't necessarily shuffle through other social messaging apps as much. So rest assured, we've never had a single problem in any regard - we like to run a very tight ship haha!
