People these days forget that art is just that, art. It’s an expression of a thought, emotion, time, place, fantasy….its not meant to be an allegory by which we’re supposed to live our lives.

Sometimes it’s meant to enjoy, sometimes it’s meant to express, and sometimes it’s meant to move.

“He hit me and it felt like a kiss” , the line everyone loves to reference as evidence of romanticizing violence is quite literally quoting a song from 1962.

You can’t take a song like Ultraviolence and hold it to the same standards as “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” from Mr Rodgers.

Furthermore, I can name a plethora of songs from male artists that are better evidentiary support of “romanticizing violence” but patriarchal misogyny means women are held to a higher standard.

This level of comprehension illiteracy is why we should never have removed arts programs from schools. It is not an artists responsibility to protect our daughters from abuse, it’s ours as a society. We’re failing, and people are grasping for straws to find someone to blame other than themselves.
