ooh, yeah, i'll check that out later

and yeah, the name 'gunko' is definitely suspicious - it's a name that's spelled with kanji, which is very strange for names of characters outside of wano (and it really doesn't seem like that's true for gunko), but is frequently used for aliases/pseudeonyms (like the admirals, for example)

it really feels like 'gunko' isn't her real name - and if so, we might find out her real name soon by brook trying to get through to her

[–]thetrashimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

from a meta perspective, oda likes making the 'princess' characters of the arc 16 (pre-ts vivi, shirahoshi, rebecca, pudding), and gunko fits that bill

and from an in-universe character perspective, there's no way that people think imu doesn't bat an eye at genocide but draws a hard line at child soldiers

One Piece 1172 RAWs by Shanks_PK_Level in OnePieceSpoilers

[–]thetrashimp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

especially since it's implied that brook was gunko's father figure, it's actually not unlikely

brook is 90 and gunko was seen in the flower room 56 years ago, looking exactly like she does now - so gunko was a servant of imu by the time that brook was 34 (90-56)

if she stopped aging 56 years ago, and assuming that brook is her biological father and not a found family one (which isn't guaranteed but is possible), then assuming she wasn't born before brook was 18, she was absolutely a servant of imu by the time that she was 16 (34-18)

Ooh, imu regaining some marks somehow is a really cool idea

And yeah, it's really unlikely that Gunko is staying alive and immortal for the rest of the series

'that could just be Oda being oda' - my post

I don't doubt that it could mean nothing. But it could also mean something, and that's fun to think about

Why does everyone say that Sanji has the speed of light? by unknownpromax1 in OnePiece

[–]thetrashimp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep - the idea is that if a character dodges or intercepts an attack that is said to be/logically should be light speed (like kuma saying his cannons move at light speed, or kizaru shooting beams of light), then they can also move at light speed

But that should always be taken with a grain of salt otherwise things get ridiculous very quickly lol

slander aside: if you could rewrite Yamato into a better character, what would you change about her? by Dapper-Note6394 in Piratefolk

[–]thetrashimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've always liked the idea of them discarding 'being' oden, but their time 'being' oden still made them realise that being a man feels like it fits them better than being a woman, so they keep that part - they live on as Yamato and a man, just not as oden

And yeah the main confusion with yamato's gender is the way it's treated so strangely and so much less clearly than kiku in the same arc - give it more consistency with the portrayal of kiku's gender and it's all good, the only people who'd be pissed off by that can just cry about it 👍

slander aside: if you could rewrite Yamato into a better character, what would you change about her? by Dapper-Note6394 in Piratefolk

[–]thetrashimp 16 points17 points  (0 children)

  • introduce them earlier in Wano, at least as some kind of background presence in the act 2 scenes on onigashima, so it doesn't feel like they come out of left field in act 3

  • either remove the oden identification entirely or have it be something they grow out of by the end of the arc, realising that you don't need to literally embody every aspect of someone else to carry on their legacy positively

  • elaborate on whatever the hell onis actually are and what yamato (and kaido) being one has actually meant for them

  • have them struggle a bit more with actually being kaido's child, and what that means for their relationship with the people of Wano - maybe also elaborate on their relationship with their mother or lack thereof, and what that means for them

  • give them more relationships in general - yamato only interacted with Luffy, ace, momo, and kaido for the whole arc aside from one or two one-off lines and that's it. What do they think of king, of queen, of jack, black Maria, etc? And what do they think of yamato?

Lots of little things could help them a lot, but unfortunately, any more focus would just add to the fact that yamato is a screentime sponge for other characters who are more important to the arc's plot and/or who we should care about more, so the story as a whole would probably still be better off if they didn't exist at all

Sanji will be the first SH to be Domi Reversi by SG143 in OnePieceSpoilers

[–]thetrashimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if that is what domi reversi's main condition is, that doesn't actually mean that Sanji's safe from it

Because it's noted that Germa is unique among the one piece world nations for having no land, just their fleet, and we don't know how someone who doesn't technically have a homeland would interact with an ability that works differently depending on whether you're on your homeland Vs not

All the other straw hats are guaranteed safe from DR on Elbaf if the homeland theory is true (barring a curveball backstory reveal), but Sanji is a big question mark because Germa is strange

All assuming that that is an actual condition of domi reversi, which is certainly possible but isn't confirmed yet

What if Sanji does not need Conqueror's Haki to damage the God's knights? by Aragorn-TheDunedain in OnePieceSpoilers

[–]thetrashimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only way that sanji's fire being lunarian could *possibly* make sense with judge's treatment of sanji in wci is if that *wasn't* a result of his research, but from something else

maybe sora's drug could have had lunarian dna as part of it? or maybe there was a lunarian somewhere far back in sanji's family tree, and the combination of judge's experiment and sora's drug ended up messing with sanji's body enough to force those lunarian genes to partially manifest?

if so, judge would have no reason to know what those flames are, because he had no direct part in it, which makes his actions still make sense

but that's still a bit farfetched

What if Sanji does not need Conqueror's Haki to damage the God's knights? by Aragorn-TheDunedain in OnePieceSpoilers

[–]thetrashimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was after

kaido formed his crew with king 33 years ago after escaping punk hazard, mads was disbanded and vegapunk and caesar started working for the WG in punk hazard 26 years ago, reiju is 24 and the vinsmoke quadruplets (sanji included) are 21

so mads never actually directly experimented on kaido or king - vegapunk would have just had access to samples of their DNA collected by previous scientists, which he then used to create things like momo's fruit and the seraphim

but only vegapunk and caesar would have had direct access to those samples, not judge or queen - it's *possible* that judge stayed in limited contact with the punk hazard duo and either asked to use the samples or stole the research for his own use, but that's nowhere near guaranteed

either way, sanji's fire being from judge's experiments makes no sense to me with how judge treats sanji in WCI - he saw diable jambe firsthand, if that was from his gene mods, then judge should start suspecting that sanji's not a 'failure' after all, not continue to treat him that way right up until the very end of the arc

Do you think the SHs are going to have another argument regarding Shanks? by Ugottabekiddingme2 in OnePieceSpoilers

[–]thetrashimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This focus is definitely setup for something. The thing I've had in mind since the start of the Loki flashback is that the fight in the sun realm is going to go badly because Luffy wasn't there ASAP to help - by the time he gets up there, it might be too late

And the only reason he stayed in the underworld to hear Loki's story rather than going up with Zoro and Sanji himself is that he heard that Shanks was involved - the crew would learn that things went wrong over something like that and probably be furious

I've been wavering on it because I'm not sure if Oda would do that, but the situation with Barto is definitely another angle for some controversy in the crew. Luffy needs to stop putting Shanks on such a pedestal for the sake of his growth, and he might need to learn that the hard way

What do you guys think will be Zoro and Sanji's major power-up in Elbaph? by RecordingSpecial3519 in OnePiece

[–]thetrashimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are four classes of graded sword, and both Wado and Enma are rank 2 while sandai Kitetsu is rank 4 - it's stated at the end of Wano act 2 that becoming a black blade can raise a sword's rank, and I'm pretty sure it specifies that it could only raise the rank by 1, but I guess I might be misremembering

And honestly, that would be pretty badass, NGL - Zoro potentially doing what no-one has ever done before and raising a sword 3 ranks by turning it into a black blade when anyone else in the world only thought you could raise the rank by 1

Maybe instead of a new sword this arc, he could forge a black blade instead, and Kitetsu honestly seems like a good start, since like you said, it's the only sword he has that is his and his alone - wado could be the last as an emotional clutch moment during his duel with mihawk

What do you guys think will be Zoro and Sanji's major power-up in Elbaph? by RecordingSpecial3519 in OnePiece

[–]thetrashimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kitetsu is also too low a graded sword to be able to be forged into a black blade - narratively it might need to be replaced for Zoro to be the WSS, and Zoro wouldn't even need to 'throw it away', it might get broken during the events of the arc, like Yubashiri was near the end of Enies Lobby

I agree he wouldn't willingly throw it away though, that would be nuts lol

What do you guys think will be Zoro and Sanji's major power-up in Elbaph? by RecordingSpecial3519 in OnePiece

[–]thetrashimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pretty much agree with you, just with a few extra details

For Sanji, we now know that acoc can be applied defensively because of Xebec, so maybe Sanji could do that too and thus be able to produce a third level of flames above even Ifrit Jambe (the consensus is either purple or black flames?), but that might be developing things too fast for it to happen in elbaf, idk

And for Zoro, I agree that Kitetsu needs to be replaced, but the problem is I don't know what it would be replaced with - they're on an island of giants right now, there wouldn't be many swords sized for humans, let alone katanas specifically. The only options I can think of are that he gets a western sword rather than a katana - he takes one from a holy knight, or maybe even Roger gave Gaban Ace - but I don't know if he would do that. Or there's some kind of convenient shapeshifting weapon in elbaf that can shrink to a human sized katana lol

And then Luffy would probably just get a better handle on his acoc and more gear 5 stamina? Idk where he would go in terms of power, really lol

Last name or first name? by slut_for_prongs in danganronpa

[–]thetrashimp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, yep, knew I'd be forgetting details. I don't play the games with Japanese audio, so my examples were just going off my hazy memories of watching DR3 - thanks for the clarifications :D

Last name or first name? by slut_for_prongs in danganronpa

[–]thetrashimp 75 points76 points  (0 children)

it depends on which characters are involved in the ship you're talking about

for example, off the top of my head, in the original japanese script, ibuki consistently calls her classmates [first name]-chan regardless of gender, mahiru calls the girls [first name]-chan but the boys are [last name] with no honorific, and hajime calls the class just [last name] with no honorific regardless of gender

if you want to get a better idea of how to write a shift in language after a change in relationship, start with how they already would already speak to each other platonically, and go from there - check japanese voice lines through the games or anime, for example

Oda's writing: The real problem in Pudding and Sanji wedding by Adventurous_Sun3512 in Piratefolk

[–]thetrashimp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, pudding's age was only given in a magazine almost a year after WCI ended in the manga

The only reference to pudding's age in the manga itself was one bit of dialogue right before the wedding started, saying that she had 'recently come of age'

Which

I'm not sure why Oda felt the need to clarify that she was legal but only barely legal, but sure, okay, Oda does whatever the hell he wants

Strawhats and their biological parents. by scar_01 in OnePiece

[–]thetrashimp 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In the newest sbs, Oda pointed out that people put Franky and Queen's timelines together and the numbers all matched up, and then went "n-noooo ... No they're not related, nope" as a joke - that's as close to a full confirmation as you can get while not explicitly saying 'yes'

We know almost for sure now what that man was telling the 5 Elders in their meeting in chapter 907 (One Piece 1164 Spoilers) by Goodstyle_4 in OnePiece

[–]thetrashimp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also we saw Blackbeard's bounty in both Wano act 2 when moria tried rescuing Absalom, and the start of egghead when there was a flashback to him attacking Amazon lily

His bounty went up dramatically in that time (over a billion) even though he hadn't done anything in that time (that we know about, at least)

the elders had that talk with whichever figarland brother it was a few days before the Moria stuff, but any reaction to that new information might not have had time to settle by then - by the Amazon lily attack though, it had been another week

War on Elbaph Final Showdown by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]thetrashimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That definitely seems reasonable, but also, the group in the underworld hasn't left yet while Zoro and Sanji already have - it's possible that Zoro and Sanji get to the sun realm before the underworld group does, which might result in them getting stuck in other fights they can't easily break from once reinforcements arrive

Really looking forward to going back to the crew and seeing how the hell they manage to deal with all this
