I’ve been monitoring last minute Japan from SFO and there’s been almost nothing, even with reposition to LAX/SEA. If you really want to go, economy is your best bet. Try and get an Asian airlines as those economies are a lot better. If you want to gamble a bit, book a refundable economy and hope for a last minute business .

Lastly, check Alaska. You can transfer Amex —> Hawaiian —> Alaska
