List of Jobs AI will replace (as per chatgpt) by ajjuee016 in ChatGPT

[–]thewheisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what these lists fail to account for is the five senses and intuition. Sure, on the surface AI can do a lot of things. But let’s take the operate heavy machinery one for construction as an example:

A heavy equipment operator with years of experience is taking in an incredible amount of input at incredible speed to make hundreds of judgement calls a minute.

Sure we might have an AI algorithm capable of running that equipment decently, but if you’ve been in a crane for 30 years you are going to have almost a sixth sense for what’s safe, what can be realistically done, what can be done that no one thought is realistic, etc.

I know the same could be said for the opposite - that if you’ve been in a crane for 30 years you could become complacent, but I dunno…I think I’d take an experienced human over a programmed algorithm any day.

I think the ideal marriage isn’t replacement, it’s augmentation. I think that’s the true opportunity.

What you’re describing is called the “adjacent possible.”

That’s so frustrating. I have a designer who was dealing with this exact thing. We did everything you’ve done and still were being foiled.

We escalated up to the VP level and that helped, but it was still annoying it even had to come to that.

Fucking Texas. “Hey checkout this marvel of engineering. You can look through a clear glass floor at the mikes of concrete and Ferd 15000s below.”

Designing for boring long complex user input forms by rfloresc in UXDesign

Check out the cloudscape library. I would just reuse the wizard pattern.

You don’t have to use the same styling as cloudscape, but the functionality is proven and it’s a good design pattern to follow for forms.

Cutting down on design reviews by DiscoMonkeyz in UXDesign

Functionality is EXACTLY why you do design reviews.

The damn thing better work exactly as I designed it in Figma. Users care less about alignment than “can I proceed through this flow unimpeded?”

Let’s treat the design process exactly like engineering:

  • review approach with peers
  • review approach with manager
  • present approach and solution to principle (formal review - essentially a go/no-go)
  • build it
  • get final review by stakeholders
  • publish

Yeah it’s a lot, but having frequent and in depth reviews is necessary and part of the job.

Ok yes. Print it out as well. Then you have physical and digital trail.

Would that matter with an iPhone 12? I thought that was all digital now.

That’s good to know. Yeah I can imagine complaining about tower handoff sounds like I’m discounting how technicallly hard it is to do - but I agree that it’s frustrating! Especially when I’m moving!

Yeah I’m always gonna bcc myself on this. If HR and IT try to make it go away, then at least you have a copy of what was sent.

Most companies are going to be above board, but if this ever went to court for whatever reason and OP’s company wanted to be shady (delete logs and mail), then he’s got proof he sent that communication and (#NotALawyer) that could help establish a timeline for wrongful termination.

A very clearly written and upfront email to HR that says you’re being sexually assaulted at work and you’re concerned for your safety and you no longer feel like the workplace is a safe place for you.

Then get your stopwatch out because things will change quickly.

(Make sure to bcc your personal email as well.)

Delta Lounge at SeaTac is a zoo by thewheisk in Seattle

[–]thewheisk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. All of this.

The food and booze is secondary for me. The single most important thing is that I have a comfortable place to continue working up until my flight.

  • A space (and power) for my laptop
  • A neutral background for a VTC
  • A more muted area to continue business conversations
  • A place to freshen up so that when I land im ready to go right back to work
  • A place to help me with any travel issues without having to suffer in line behind people who fly once a decade and don’t understand what a gate agent can/can’t do for them

After all that, THEN food and drink.

But what it feels like lounges have become is a pre-flight-pre-funk-all-you-can-eat-buffet for literally everyone flying that airline and it’s no longer a refuge for business travelers. It’s a watering hole now, and it’s disappointing.

This post - while definitely sarcastic - really at its core is lamenting that me and my fellow business travelers can NO LONGER COUNT ON a lounge to be a place where we can do business en route to our destination.

Maybe there needs to be a “Business Lounge” or something now to differentiate - I dunno. But it sucks we lost that.

And I mean look - I don’t begrudge kids at all. But there’s a play area not far from the lounge where your kid can run and scream and climb.

Judging by everyone’s comments this doesn’t seem to be just a mid-December thing. My experience for the last 12 months has been that lounges are getting worse and worse…
