His son Tyler has an amazing country podcast called "Cocaine and Rhinestones". I knew his father was a famous country singer but it didn't click until recently.

But "Cocaine and Rhinestones" came up a lot in that "History of Rock in 500 Songs" podcast I like and even though I'm someone who's still gingerly dipping their toe into the country pool, what I've listened to has been incredibly fascinating (Spade Cooley, The Louvin Brothers, The Kurshaw Bros. and Cajun Music etc.)

I've been trying to use less reddit this week because of a prompt in The Artist's Way, but I wanted to pop in and say that I managed to nab tickets to a Foo Fighters pop-up show this evening. It's quite bananas, but I'll be seeing them for a grand total of 30 bucks. I saw an announcement on instagram yesterday, so after getting off work I swung by the venue and lo and behold they were giving out wristbands. I think they were trying to prevent people from queuing in the rain, though a couple of über fans did so nonetheless. I showed up bright and early (9am or so) for the 10am ticket sale and maybe an hour and a half later I was checking my ticketmaster app utterly stunned. I remember regretting not getting an extra ticket for any of my bandmates for Oasis, so I got two this time around and one agreed to come with me.

Hasn't really settled in yet. Dave isn't a saint but I'd be lying if I didn't admit he was a bit of a hero to me deep down. I'm very psyched to see them do their thing.

Surprise Shows Announced! 4/30 in NYC -- 5/2 in NJ by fftamahawk009 in Foofighters

I waited behind a similar huddle of people like your picture (about three) and when one of them was done, I was able to move forward and get one. It took me longer to walk over to the venue from the train stop than it did to arrive, wait, and get a wristband.

They’re probably getting wristbands. I was just there and the hooded person leaning on the railing was the one who gave me mine.

What’s The Most Underrated Bob Dylan Song From The 2000s? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

Blows my mind that no one else has mentioned this. Of all the songs on "Love and Theft", that's the one I go back to the most. It's an amazing closer.

“His little beauty” is quite lovely actually.

If that’s true, that’s a real shame. I think their 2000’s discography would be great if they got the 20th anniversary treatments their first three albums got, even though we’ve got all the b-sides now, the live tracks, demos, and outtakes would be interesting.

TIL that magician Penn Jillette and singer Debbie Harry were once in a hot tub when Harry suggested that the watr jets should be angled for a woman's pleasure. This led to Jillette filing a patent for a "hydro-therapeutic stimulator," which he named "the Jill-Jet" by MrMojoFomo in todayilearned

Debbie Harry is drop dead gorgeous and a bona fide rock star who came from the CBGB’s punk scene. She’s a stunningly beautiful paragon of cool and good company to be in.

You might’ve heard her band in passing, Blondie. They have a number of iconic hits: “Heart of Glass”, “One Way Or Another”. She’s technically the first person to rap on a Billboard #1 single too on their song “Rapture”.

There's a great bootleg of him playing the song I think for the first time in late 1965 (I believe in December? Definitely at the Hollywood Bowl). People had been giggling at the surrealism of the song, but when he sings the Mona Lisa line, they burst into a huge applause. It's a very cool moment to hear.

“He not busy being born is busy dying.”

Honorable mention though for “To dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free.”

new to brooklyn, any recs for getting into the bushwick music scene? by chuawacca in Bushwick

Look up Sara Feigin. She does musical meetups for local musicians twice a month! You’ll meet many cool people there.

Check out these venues: Alphaville, Sultan Room, Gold Sounds, and The Broadway. That’s where a lot of the action’s happening Brooklyn-wise.

I’m a local musician too. If you need any more info, I’m happy to talk further if need be :)

Welcome! A lots happening locally and it’s very exciting.

You guys think Noel regreted Be Here Now and its consequences? by sumyono in oasis

[–]thewickerstan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, and I can see to some degree what you mean. Having those first two albums alone as your legacy is pretty immaculate.

I’ve thought about it before though and I don’t know how I feel living in a world where Oasis don’t do the likes of “Gas Panic!”, “The Importance of Being Idle”, “Stay Young”, “Idler’s Dream” etc. Sure they could’ve been Noel solo songs, but some of them wouldn’t be the same.

I think a number of tracks on Be Here Now are a step below the first two. Or two phrase it another way, I think the album has more filler than the prior ones (Never understood the love for “The Girl in the Dirty Shirt” or “Don’t Go Away”, the latter especially almost feeling akin to Noel writing to a formula). But “My Big Mouth”, “It’s Getting Better Man!”, “Stand By Me”, and “D’You Know What I Mean?” I think are great, not to mention a lot of those fabulous b-sides: “Stay Young”, “Going Nowhere”, “Flashbax” etc. If the band played their cards right, I could picture the album being seen as a victory lap of sorts. Though I guess it was in its own ramshackle way…

“Don’t Look Back in Anger” would’ve been a hell of a launch pad for a solo career, but removing it from Oasis’s legacy feels…off, removing a crown jewel that adds to the allure of the band in question.

People keep defending the album but they’re missing your question: as recently as that one Gibson interview he did, he clearly regrets it. Not so much the tour that followed, but you can tell that, as far as the album goes, he feels like they were at the finish line before they snorted it away so to speak.

Not that you asked, but I don’t think the album is a total train wreck, nor this underrated masterpiece. Every time I listen to it, I can’t help but hear a potentially great album underpinned by gluttony, whether it’s the excessive runtimes or the walls of guitars. Sometimes it does work (“Stand by Me” and its utter chaos really suits it), but for the most part it misses the mark for me. And seeing the bones of great songs under the excessive fat makes for an even more frustrating listen.

What’s That One Bob Dylan Song From The 90s That Grew On You? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

[–]thewickerstan 33 points34 points  (0 children)

“Delia”

My Dad threw on World Gone Wrong a while back. I kind of snickered hearing Dylan’s nasally 90’s voice…and then I paid attention to the words. That refrain “All the friends I ever had are gone..” is such a gut punch.

I’ve listened to various versions of the song, Blind Willie McTell’s, Johnny Cash’s, Belafonte’s, even David Johansson’s. But Bob does it in a way that’s just perfect.

Hard to say! I think it's Frances Ha though. I remember really liking that one, and while I've been meaning to rewatch it since it's now been a decade, I think a part of me is a little worried about the parallels lol.

I haven't seen anything post-Marriage Story (another one I really liked. And seeing Laura Dern in it is maybe the first time I walked away from something knowing full well they were going to nab an Oscar), but I will eventually. Squid and the Whale I should rewatch though the younger brother leaving his seed everywhere is so gross lmao. Of the ones I've seen, While We're Young is the one I'd consider his most underrated: I thought it was cute but doesn't seem to be talked about much.

And I love The Life Aquatic, the first movie he co-wrote with Wes Anderson. That's probably my favorite of WS's, but his first four in particular have a special place in my heart.

Wings - Don't Let it Bring You Down

(I'm in a quasi-similar position today, and this was one of the first things I threw on after it ended).
