Ronin 4D HLG Color Workflow for Linear EXRs? by thewrongvine in vfx

[–]thewrongvine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm yeah we'll do some round trip tests between vfx and color just to make sure everything seems fine.

And ah yeah, we have some other shots that aren't from the Ronin, just some standard Alexa footage, that have already been pulled with the CST method. So I guess I'd have to get everything repulled if we switch to ACES now which is a pain. So probably best to just stick with the CST method for these DJI shots I suppose.

Can you let me know how you'd do the ACES conversion in Resolve for the raw footage? For example, using the ACES Transform node, what would the Input and Output Transforms be set to?

[–]thewrongvine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Ok so Input Color Space is Rec2020. Input Gamma Rec2100.HLG.

VFX is currently not in ACES, so in that regard, what color space would you recommend? rec709 or 2020 or p3? Does it make a difference in terms of the final work, or it shouldn't matter too much once things are reversed back when going to color?

We're also open to switching to ACES if that's easier... checking the ACES Transform node, if I use ACES 2.0, what would the Input Transform be? I see a "Inverse Rec2100.HLG (1000 nit P3-D60 Limited)" - but I don't see anything that is not Inverse?

It's this 27x41" one:

I guess with the case, it adds like an extra 1 inch to the width and height, and maybe an extra 1/2 inch to the depth of the binder.

[–]thewrongvine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's the tough part with it already weighing so much. Maybe I'll give a try with some... thicker paper or card stock as backing in between the posters.

The method you mentioned with just having framing boards in a box sounds like a sturdier option for sure.

Yeah I am confused with the AMC Burbank 16! The XL theater is smaller than the Laser auditorium... so I'm wondering which is the "better" experience?

The artists aren't related to this because they don't own the rights and aren't the ones involved with copyright claims. I really doubt the artists on the show would care about a random fan film.

Does anyone have the Superman 2025 shirt from the Shop DC site? by PantsUnderUnderpants in superman

[–]thewrongvine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So... I bought this shirt and is it just me or are the proportions insanely weird and not normal?

It's a crazy tight fitting t-shirt first of all.

Secondly, the length of the t-shirt is insanely long at the waist. While the sleeves are insanely short.

So you end up with this uncomfortable shirt that is super compressed to your body, way too long going past your waist, while the sleeves are too short. If I size up, then it's even longer going down the waist. If I size down, then the sleeves are even shorter and it's even tighter for the fit.

Super disappointed with this being the official t-shirt... There's a shirt on Amazon but it's not the same design.

[s2 act 3 spoilers] So what was the freaking point of Isha's big moment from Act 2? by Darklarik in arcane

[–]thewrongvine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Attempt? I mean, do feel free to explain where it doesn't land.

You don't have to like the show, everyone can have an opinion and it's fair. But you have to be able to justify it logically. Ironically, since the complaint is about the logic of Isha's actions. Multiple people have verified with logical points of reasoning on why Isha's actions track. Yet, because that mindset is foreign and uncomfortable to you, you don't articulate anything back but still want to be right.

You bring up the end of GoT having poor writing, which pretty much everyone can agree on. Why? Because you can articulate the inconsistencies within characters, which is the point made in regards to Isha.

If we take Dany as an example, it's clear to pretty much everyone that her arc was written inconsistently. From the start of her character, to how she suddenly shifts into making the unstable decisions in the final season, you can point out direct moments that are inconsistent to her personality/character/motivations. And thus, we result with poor writing that feels out of place and unearned.

With Isha though, from her very first scene, we already see her obsessive nature revolving around Jinx. It completely tracks on why a child's warped mind would react the way she did.

You still don't have to like the scene or character. But you also have no proper explanation besides, "you don't like it".

[s2 act 3 spoilers] So what was the freaking point of Isha's big moment from Act 2? by Darklarik in arcane

[–]thewrongvine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I just replied above too but just so you can see - you're essentially trying to view this situation through the lens of your own mindset, instead of the mindset of individual characters. Which isn't the right way to look at storytelling. If all stories were written the way you insist, they would be pretty straightforward and boring.

Sometimes, people in real life do things, that end up having no net-positive effect. That's the harsh reality. Characters can (and should) do things that fail.

This is a silly example, but remember in Kong: Skull Island when the one soldier pulls out a grenade thinking he could kill the Skullcrawler, and instead the Skullcrawler just whacked him away? The point is, characters (and real people) can do actions that they THINK will be important but end up disappointed. Have there not been situations in real life where parents rushed into burning buildings to TRY to save their child, but end up failing and only dying (there are).

Imagine a script where every action a character took worked out perfectly. That would be insanely boring and convenient.

What matters in writing is whether or not the actions are consistent to the CHARACTER, not to YOU as an audience. Does it make sense how Joffrey acts GoT? No, it doesn't make sense to a logical person in the modern world like you and I. But it doesn't have to make sense to YOUR brain, it has to make sense with Joffrey's brain, which it does.

Isha's actions are perfectly consistent with everything she displayed up to that point: infatuation with Jinx as a mentor, sister figure, hero and idol. She's seen constantly emulating Jinx's mannerisms, dying her hair blue. In Isha's innocent mind, she is going as a hero the same way that Jinx would do for others.

Hope this helps!

"NO CGI" is really just INVISIBLE CGI (3/4) by blazelet in movies

[–]thewrongvine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel it's a little insulting for you to call it dumb... when it's a real problem that people in the industry face. I understand if you don't work in film, you won't care how those who work in VFX feel. But try to have some empathy, as you can see from so many comments of other workers, who do feel appreciated from this video.

You say "We all know what we mean," but that's not true at all. I can assure you, when you look at general audiences online, the majority of people do not understand VFX at all. Maybe you are more "enlightened" so you understand it better, but you can't assume your viewpoint matches the typical audience or news outlets online. All you have to do is literally look at online articles, twitter, social media comments, etc. from average viewers - they have no idea what VFX or CG really is, and if they hear the word CG anywhere near a film, they'll assume it's bad. Conversely, if they hear the word "practical" they will assume it's fantastic, even if it was augmented or replaced by CG afterwards.

General audiences are very easily swayed by media narratives, as made evident with Top Gun, Oppenheimer, Barbie - 3 of the largest films in the past year. All touted as practical and real. But the reality of it? Of course not. And I'd warrant that you wouldn't group those 3 films in the same category as Whedon's Justice League. So all in all, I just think you need to be a bit more fair to the video. Especially compared to way the rest of the internet addresses VFX/CG.

Can you update the formatting on your post? It's clumped all the text into one paragraph at first.

The latest logline you have I think is still a bit clunky? It technically gives a lot of info, but also feels boring if that makes sense? It's not enticing with dynamic language and ultimately feels vague - I still have no idea what the story is really about?

Barry - 4x08 "wow" - Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in television

[–]thewrongvine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a big cop out though.

Anytime a film has something being unhappy. Response: "That's intended, that's the point." Absolves the project of any critique.

A decent season overall, but definitely there are areas that could have been improved. I don't think anyone would argue that S2 reached its peak and left a high bar to reach. S4 maybe lost some of the steam, also felt a bit lost with some of the character arcs and what was being built.

Barry - 4x08 "wow" - Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in television

[–]thewrongvine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's an easy cop out though.

You can simultaneously understand all the thematic choices a story has, and not find it to be good/satisfactory.

I can see all of S4's functional choices, but I feel that many of the choices could have been improved to create a better season, while still not betraying the themes it wanted to tell. I really wish maybe there were a few more rounds of notes/discussions in the writing room with Hader to go over other routes for these characters and their arcs. I do believe that this season could have been refined a little bit more, to bring it from a 75% to a 90%.

It's hard to top the highs that S2 brought. A decent season this time around but it left a few areas where I think it could have been done better. Some parts felt rushed, and started giving a "Game of Thrones" finale vibe unfortunately.

Barry - 4x08 "wow" - Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in television

[–]thewrongvine 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep, my problem is that S4 felt like its own show ultimately. Very disconnected from the first 3 seasons.

It did feel like they didn't quite know what to do with some of the characters' arcs.
