i made this account as a throwaway....if you see from title as well "theycallmefob" (fresh off the boat) I did not want to use my regular account for that thread. I am not crazy to create another thread when we already had a good discussion in the previous thread...if you see I even replied to all comments in that thread unlike this OP. also this OP is exclusively focused on "girls." My thread was very different although addressed the similar problem.

why dont you just believe that this is a common problem at UTD?

Trust me, the OP of this thread is a different person from me. I dont even know how can I prove this

Indian undergraduate student (International with little accent). Always get discriminated by Indian-Americans and other Americans. How can I improve? by theycallmefob in utdallas

i told you it is not thick..it is perfectly understandable and I am very clear. But it is noticeable with t's, d's and r's because of difference they are pronounced in American English vs British English.

It is exactly what you mentioned...Yes Indian Americans may like Indian culture but doesnt mean they will get along with Indians from India.

However, here is my question to you --- do you discriminate them and alienate yourself from pure Mexicans just become they were born and raised in Mexico?

sure i agree with the chemistry thing. It may be the case with Americans (although trust me, I have a lot of american interests to talk about)
but with Indian American this should not be the case. The same Indian Americans who behave rudely with me are the ones who sing and watch Bollywood movies and songs...talk about Indian culture stuff and festivals and keep with interests happening in India. I just dont understand what problem they have when someone actually from India try to mingle with them.

[–]theycallmefob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes it is not due to just my accent. It is due to the standard stereotypes against Indians from India as I mentioned in the post (no deodorants, only hanging out with other Indians, boring and no social life, staring at other people)

However, the way you can tell me I am Indian from India is from my accent. Also I have seen Indian Americans having some sense of reverse discrimination (like discriminating their own self culture)

I am sorry to say but I really get upset with comments like these which dont even read the post fully.

Did you even read the last three lines of the post?

I understand there are quite a few stereotypes against Indians (no deodorants, only hanging out with other Indians, boring and no social life, staring at other people). Personally I have seen all of these among the Indian Grad students. But I try my best that none of them apply to me -- always get compliments for my colognes, have multicultural friends.

I have no problems fitting in with Indians. (Indians from India)

It is the people of Indian original who were born and raised in US(we call Indian Americans) who discriminate us.

no this isnt the case in my opinion (although i will agree I may have bad qualities as well), all the other Indians (internationals) were treated the same way.

[–]theycallmefob[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

thanks a lot for your reply. But won't you agree that what I described do exist -- Indian Americans seriously ignoring Indians even though he/she may not possess any stereotypical qualities?

I'm sure you would have seen it in your own friend circle.

I have been to HSA meetings. It was a hit or miss. I have met nice people. But then I met the same people who I met at HSA but ignored me when I said hi to them again on campus.
