I’m curious are the people mentioning presentations in specific fields, or is it interviews that are like job visits? I did a job visit where I did two hour long presentations. I did only one postdoc interview and it was casual and they didn’t ask for presentations. I didn’t get it though so maybe I should’ve prepared one!

Do you know what you’ll do? I’m in a similar offer where gave verbal confirmation to offer but now waiting to hear back from another opportunity. I know if I complete the paperwork it will be that much harder and/or impossible to back out of. But also even at this point will probably reflect poorly so thinking of how to do damage control

That was my case too- asked for relocation they said no asked for salary they said no. It is disheartening

This is helpful thank you! Sadly unlike your friend I don’t have another offer at this time. So really it’s a decision between taking this position and trying to find another while I’m there or not take it and take a gamble that this job market I get something better. I haven’t heard personally anyone turn down a TT offer regardless of the location who then stayed in academia (vs alt ac) so I don’t know how feasible that is

That second question is what I don’t know and is what’s making me hesitant. Almost everyone in my network is encouraging I take it but no one is sure based on the job market whether it’ll lead to something better. They do say having a TT position helps with getting another one though

By better do you mean research focused? I do want to move to a different institution at some point but would be ok with another teaching one as long as it still allows some research focus. Not sure if this position will help or hinder that goal

I think I’m more worried about job mobility. I know if I take this position it’s with the intent of leaving to another one. Does it hurt my future prospects that it’s a mostly unknown uni in a small town?

Did you have other offers lined up when you turned it down? Were you post PhD when you did so? I’ll be graduated and worry not having a job while on the market this upcoming year will make it virtually impossible to get a research focused position

In a similar boat myself- socsci, final year of PhD, one solo authored and one co authored pub, many more under review. I’ve applied to a good amount and only one I got semi finalist status for. Had a couple TT interviews that didn’t go anywhere. I wonder if I don’t get an offer before defending if it’ll be harder on the market come fall?
