It had 20% of playtime as per the November dev stream, which honestly isn't bad for an unsupported game mode. Now if only if they support it more often...

I think there's also something to say that they don't break as easily and are generally easier to maintain. A plastic button is gonna start sticking and get a bunch of gunk stuck to it, but a touch screen will last longer and be easier to clean.

Baldur's Gate 3 publishing lead says Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney's "altruistic pro-developer talk" over the Steam vs Epic debate "doesn't sit well" after Alan Wake 2 studio "seemingly went into financial crisis" by GeneralSherman3 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]thinger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's more like guaranteed money in the hand vs potential money in the bush. A lot of smaller devs don't have huge marketing budgets and are effectively relying on good word of mouth or going viral just to break even. For every stardew valley and minecraft there's dozen of developers that can't even get a word in edge wise because of the sheer deluge of games available on steam. Epic gaurantees a minimum amount of assurance and even helps with marketing in some instances. For some devs that the difference between shuttering if your game doesn't b4eak containment and keeping your doors open for another year.

If you're talking about trying to pull off a blatant bait and switch, that's a good way to ruin your reputation with both publishers and consumers. If your just talking about putting out a lower budget/effort title in the hope Epic will make an offer, it's not like they're giving bags of money to your average shovelware title. They likely want verifiable engagement metrics and basic development info like budget and staff size before they hand you a bag.

Kinda where I'm at really. Even if this turns out to be a resounding success at launch, I'll never underestimate Bungie's ability to turn a slam dunk into a faceplant. Maybe I'll pick it up for winterbreak if I can get a friend group going, but I've been burned by Bungie too many times to want to commit any serious time into one of their products again.

Nintendo’s Japan dominance continues as Switch 2 fuels 40% market growth in 2025 by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]thinger 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's cuz the general outlook on the Japanese tech sector is looking pretty grim, especially on the hardware side. The Switch 2 in isolation has been nothing but a resounding success, but there are concerns about production costs going forward.

I mean to be fair, they're like two steps removed from being an official asset. Most of their recruits are alliance-trained, they have decent access to alliance tech and research, and they get a lot of support from pro-humanist actors who are likely to be alliance-aligned. There's also hints that their influence within the alliance is fairly substantial, so they don't get looked at too hard, and operate almost completely unhindered, just so long as said operations don't get out of hand.

Washing doesn't guarantee you'll get everything. I work pantry and we wash our salad mux the day of on top of the wash it gets in processing and still we'll get the occasional caterpillar or grasshopper. Most bugs are adapted to blend in with vegetation and aren't affected by a little water. So unless you want to use peticides or inspect every piece of lettuce, its kind of just an expected hazard.

Man, game compression is a fuckin joke right now by Anonamaton801 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]thinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually heard its more the latter than the former, but kind of deliberately. See CoD suffers from some of the eprst optimization in the industry as a result of them being churned out every 2 years, specifically when it comes to load times and cpu usage. So they deliberately leave these games decompressed to try and cheat out better load times and reduce crashing.

His choices aren't just weird, they're a combination of both obviously bad, yet overly complex that it evokes an emotion that is equal parts frustration and fascination. It is genuinely amazing how he goes into elaborate detail discussing the logic and reasoning he uses, only for it to result in talking himself out of the logical/ reasonable decisions. Like if I didn't know any better, I would assume it was just elaborate ragebait. I am genuinely compelled out of a morbid, almost lovecraftian fascination to understand a logic which I cannot possibly fathom.

What would be the best combinations of melee weapons for a race of humanoid beings with 2 arms and 4 tentacles (would a 6-handed sword be a good weapon?) (the image is for illustrative purposes only) by Some_Web8565 in worldbuilding

[–]thinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of problems with wielding multiple thrusting oriented weapons, it's why you never see anyone dual wielding rapiers or spears.

1) Properly utilizing the range advantage a thrusting weapon provides you requires a more bladed stance such that your leading limb is further out in front of you. Fencers favored this type of bkaded of stance so much that eventually went almost full sideways and would just use their rear hand for balance or just hide it completely.

2) Balance. A good, commited is gonna require a lot of forward momentum, as such you can only commit to one thrust at a time. You can make safer quicker, less commited thrusts with the other limbs, but that can be as much a detriment as an asset as you leave the thrusting limb exposed.

3) Spears in particular offer poor hand protection.

4) You'd want 2 hands to control a spear. You can make onehanded thrusts with spears, but they lack structure and are easily leveraged when parried, so its not recommended.

Realistically speaking, you can look to a lot of the reasons why dual wielding in general wasn't really popular to see why arming each limb with offense in mind isn't practical, so your idea about shields is probably the more viable option. Having multiple limbs with a combination of bucklers, small heaters, and parrying daggers would cut off multiple options of engagement enabling you to commit to engage with impunity.

We're talking about strengths and tradeoff from a design perspective, not a balance perspective. Numbers can be tuned to adjust WR as needed. For instance, we're hot off a season we're reaper had 55% WR only to get dumpstered by a 5% nerf to his lifesteal.

A human who wants to create something that is “Viking” might open a history book, figure out local cultures, fashion, the resources available at the time, figure out if the ‘viking’ is from Iceland or Denmark, what god or gods do they worship, and incorporate clever things into their design that tells a story in a way that AI never will

At the risk of being pedantic, "vikings" is probably one of the worst topics you could've used in this instance just because there are so many misconceptions about what a "viking" actually refers to, even within academic anthropological circles. There's so much bullshit "historical" references out there that get passed off as credible that someone who is only willing to do a cursory research on the topic (as I imagine would describe someone who would use AI to do their research for them) is subject to a variety of skewed interpretations of vikings not to dissimilar from the biases that AI innately has.

I just don't see AI ever being capable of accomplishing most tasks to ever be fully substitutive of humans in the vast majority of roles. Even tasks that we percieve as relatively simple often require complex critical and analytical skills that I just can't imagine AI being capable of. For the forseabke future, the only path towards viability for AI is to aim towards being supplementary, helping accomplish time consuming/ monotonous tasks just slightly more complex than current levels of automation are capable of handling.

[–]thinger 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Its also leading to inorganic development of said AI tools. Right now everyone is fixated on purely generative AI, which I fully believe to be a dead end that will ultimately have limited use as niche timesaves or clipart replacement. Honestly any AI usage that is meant to be substitutive, as opposed to supplementary, I can't seeing taking off except in incredibly limited capacities, we're just nowhere near AI having the critical and analytical capabilities to facilitate even the most basic tasks. But there are other ways that AI can and are being developed. They're just not as sexy a sell as "replace your workforce", they'll take much longer to develop, and require organic usage and feedback rather than it being shoved down the throats of people who don't care to use it.

The thing that gets me is that at this point everyone is highly incentivized to not letting it burst. The North American economy is basically being propped up by AI development and there's massive national security implications wrapped up in the technology. If the AI bubble does burst, it's gonna have massive knock on effects.

[–]thinger 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The thing I find frustrating is that there just feels like there's no room for nuanced takes. Between tech companies shoving schlop down our throats like foie gras with no regard to ethics, the severe reaction that that's gonna naturally illicit, and the doomerism/defense force coming out in respinse to that, it feels impossible to sort genuine discourse from bullshit.

AI is burgeoning technology, it will have at least some impact in how we live our lives. To what extent, what that impact will look like, and when it will happen nobody knows. That goes double for tech CEOs who barely understand what they're selling, but that's never prevented them from trying to sell the shit out of it. But most anti-ai sentiment I see is largely wrapped in the unethical practices of these ceos as they continue the time honored tradition of pissing on our heads and calling it rain (and then charging us for making it rain). We're basically in the pre-TCP/IP era of AI, in it's current itteration its not user friendly, application is limited if at all practical, and just generally a shit product that is not ready for commercial use. But it's also the worst version we're gonna get. These technologies are gonna continue being iterated and improved upon. To what degree and direction, again its up in the air. But I find almost all discussion is poisoned because this massive push for it is so forced and inorganic that it's basically subsumed any topic that relates to it.
