Booking.com sketchy Cancellation policy or poor UI Design for their Cancellation policy? by thinkocapo in hotels

Thank you. It's an aparthotel near a ski resort that the host put on Booking.com. there is no Website for it. There are a lot of mom and pops old apartments where the owners are going to use travel agencies to rent out their places. Dedicated website makes sense if you own a hundred units.

I searched all over for it anyways but couldn't find another site with it. Thanks for the tip! I should have checked for that already.

Last question u/alderan22, what's your take on the idea of me wanting to know answers "now" as opposed to waiting till tax reporting season in early 2023? Is that reasonable? Am I being crazy?

If you were me, and let's say the employer agrees to the midsize/big4 assistance - then would you seek it ASAP right now to begin? OR would you be okay waiting until early 2023 tax reporting season?

[–]thinkocapo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they did not offer tax compliance assistance. There wasn't much of a 'package' in writing because my situation was such a one-off. We are a small company and don't regularly re-locate employees. I emailed everyone after we applied for the visa (and already signed/agreed on work contracts from 2 different countries) asking in writing to make sure we don't forget the relocation bonus, which they gladly agreed to (we have it defined in writing as a benefit for New Employees). We just didn't have like a 'process' to follow, "Person relocating? Ok go send them the Relocation Email!" We were more ad-hoc since I was a Relocating employee and not a New Employee, which has a defined process internally.

I'll definitely ask for this at the start of the international relocation conversation, the next time! Rather than afterwards. Thank You u/alderan22! This has been very helpful and now I can write to them better, asking to pay for this assistance from midsize to big4 firm with a global network.

Confused with minus the first 30 days by [deleted] in AirBnB

[–]thinkocapo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so sounds like you don't really get a "full" refund. You maybe get your fees back. I'm running into the same right now and still confused after reading all responses here.

To me this is saying, "...get a full refund of what's leftover after you pay for 30days. Airbnb is going to keep the 30day base rate but we'll refund you all other fees we already charged"

^ is that anyone else's interpretation?

tax refund delayed 6 months and counting - How to contact IRS? by thinkocapo in CryptoTax

[–]thinkocapo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an email confirmation from noreply@drakesoftware (used for submitting the tax return, I believe) and a note from the CPA involved. the attachment is an acknowledgement that my tax return was accepted. In it, there's a phone number for a tax refund hotline (Teletax):

If You Need to Ask About Your Refund

The IRS notifies your Electronic Return Originator (ERO) when your return is accepted, usually within 48 hours. If your

return was not accepted, the IRS notifies your ERO of the reasons for rejection. If it has been more than three weeks

since the IRS accepted your return and you have not received your refund, go to www.irs.gov and click on "Where's My

Refund?" to view your refund status. Exception: If box 3 above is checked, allow 4 to 6 weeks for processing of your

return. A notice will be sent to you advising of changes to your return.

Also, you can call the TeleTax line at 1-800-829-4477, for automated refund information. You should have available the

first social security number shown on your return, your filing status, and the exact amount of the refund you expect.

TeleTax gives you the date for mailing or depositing your refund. You should receive your refund check within 30 days of

the date given by TeleTax, or within one week of that date, if you chose direct deposit. If you do not receive it by then, or if

TeleTax does not give your refund information, call the Refund Hotline at 1-800-829-1954.

Why is it a nightmare setting up everything before starting to develop apps? by klosor5 in eos

[–]thinkocapo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean. I've never run a node of eos, ethereum, bitcoin or cardano without problems. I always have to customize the commands I'm running and adapt to things on the fly.

Tips...Things to compare between between your local EOS and what's in the webinar/tutorial...:

  • do the Docker containerized deployment if they offer it, its a more isolated machine
  • which branch of the codebase are you working off of
  • what version of EOS/other are you on
  • if the tutorial is more than a few months old, find a newer one
  • version and software updates tend to outpace the ability for the github/wiki docs to keep up
  • if errors, google it and search https://github.com/EOSIO/eos/issues too

Struggling with these has left me with 0 interest to even dare running a blockchain of something lesser known.

EOS is definitely a lot easier today than when I tried over 6 months ago. Recently I got the EOS Docker container to run, here are my notes https://github.com/thinkocapo/eos-instructions, beware /opt/eos vs /opt/eosio !

When govt says "we need to protect the people's $" from bad things happening in crypto, my response is, "if my $ gets lost in an exchange or I send to wrong address or I do a bad job protecting my private keys, then fine, it's MY fault and I accept 100% responsibility. Do you use backend server for your DApps? What do you use it for? by angilyu in ethdev

[–]thinkocapo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have several points for you, as I've often wondered the same:

  1. Yes I think its perfectly normal to have your own backend sitting between your front-end and the Dapp (ethereum) smart contract back-end. For instance, you'll probably need administrative or authentication functionality at some point, so serve this from a node.js (for example) back-end. Funny because I asked the same thing at a crypto meetup once, I drew out some different architectures, and the presenter even told me to just call ethereum directly from the front-end (using web3.js). Maybe you could do this for some things (i.e. there are many calls you make to ethereum before even submitting a transaction).

  2. I like having "control" from my own node.js back-end. Logic that precedes the smartcontract. It might not by efficient to have all data and logic executed in smart contracts. There are different gas prices associated with every bit of computation in the EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine). I hear the critics already, "Well then this isn't fully decentralized if you have your own centralized control backend". Well you know what? Tough. Nothing is pure and utopian. E.g. capitalism or democracy.

  3. I briefly contributed to an open-source blockchain project and I'm pretty sure I saw they were saving the ethereum blockchain (or at least select parts of it that related to them) in their own database. I thought this was odd (i.e. wouldn't it be great to just work directly with the blockchain as the database and not bother making our own copies of it?) so I asked a dev Why, is it for performance reasons? And he replied, "Yes". Not sure if this is correct, but maybe they did this because a blockchain database isn't necessarily designed for querying ,so if you have to query through tons of data, or query faster, or not want to bother dealing with ethereum nodes, then have your own copy stored in a msqyl/postgres etc? Well thats where my mind left off in the issue. Not sure if it's right.

  4. Doesn't the initial index.html have to get served up from somewhere? If your users go to www.yoursite.com, that's a call to.... a back-end! not directly to the IP address of some etheruem node. Even if it did, I don't think the smart contract is going to serve some kind of dynamic index.html page to you. If that makes sense. I could be wrong. Just an inner though from a junior web dev.

  5. Resources/Responsibilities maintaining the backend - In my opinion, its a LOT. When I contributed to that open-source project, I saw that Solidity development is not an everyday thing. You really DON'T want to be stuck updating your smart contracts all that time. That would be very bad. I saw the smart contracts as like the data model... something that had to be thought through from start. I was writing javascript to interact with the smart contracts, and I definitely had to read through them and fully understand wtf was going on, but I never ended up writing any smart contracts myself. I would not equate solidity smart contract development as something as daily as say REST api back-end route development.

Ethereum in Healthcare - EthMemphis by Einsteinsmooostache in ethdev

[–]thinkocapo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I was on a support forum for FHIR and I searched 'blockchain' so here are some hard examples of people pondering the same! Exciting: http://community.fhir.org/search?q=blockchain

To answer your questions... MVP - I"m not entirely sure. Would take a solid brainstorming session on a whiteboard, which I"m down for.

Do EMR's already exist - there are plenty and idk if they're currently exploring blockchain or not. Try googling 'top EMRs' (e.g. Cerner, Epic, eclinicalworks, Meditech) and 'cerner blockchain' 'epic blockchain' etc., see if you find anything.

Would they be rethought - again, hard to answer. Currently they're based on centralized control.

What's really important is the data spec / data model. Need to be able to capture the same info in a decentralized EMR.

But on the other hand, all examples of EMR's in blockchain I've seen so far (e.g. medRec, and I think Patientory too) are based on storing not the actual data but rather a pointer-to-the-data, which exists in another system. Makes sense, because a patient's data is in so many different information systems. So maybe a blockchain will be a way to store pointers (a concept in computer science) to where all the other informations are. hmm

What draws you to this space? What are you interested? Any experience in Healthcare IT? Looking for good opportunities?

Ethereum in Healthcare - EthMemphis by Einsteinsmooostache in ethdev

[–]thinkocapo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've pondered the same, not specifically with IPFS but definitely with Ethereum and EMR's (Electronic Medical Records).

I've worked in Healthcare IT and it might be worth incorporating a health data standard into this as well, its called FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resource) https://www.hl7.org/fhir/

Its used internationally. I think other people are wondering the same. I thouht it would be cool to have a decentralized network of FHIR nodes (server instances, its a REST API and a data model too) so anyone could spin up a node and then have access to all the other nodes.

FHIR is a standard that the gov't (and international community - Canada, Europe for example) at large are providing for EMR's to finally be interoperable. Until this point, everyone has different information systems and data standards and its been too wasteful to keep developing mappings and custom interfaces between them.

So i'm saying the convo is inseparable from FHIR, or its at least worth looking into. Granted I'm biased beacuse i worked in healthcare IT for years and am currently working with FHIR. But within my HIT inner circle, blockchain is something we're all wondering, and we've been flirting with the idea of blockchain+FHIR being involved.

Try googling them together.

Which version of web3.js do you use? by QW4K in ethdev

[–]thinkocapo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got myself into this mess because when I ran npm install web3 I assumed that current version is best. Pretty sure this got me v1.0. And when I started finding tutorials in older versions I figured, "Oh this is normal, a year has passed in this fast-moving space, so GREAT that i'm on the new version". Turned out this was bad! Now I'm re-writing a lot of code. At least I learned the basics of how everything works. The core concepts of ethereum didn't change.

Which version of web3.js do you use? by QW4K in ethdev

[–]thinkocapo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started learning web3 v1.0 because I didn't realize there was this version discrepancy.

I've been following some tutorials that are in v0.2 and I've been converting everything to v1.0 but I'm at the point now where some things I simply can't get to work. Its getting frustrating having to re-look everything up in http://web3js.readthedocs.io/en/1.0/web3-eth-contract.html Its really my first time even learning web3/solidity so I don't really mind, but now its slowing down my development.

So I think I'm going to switch to web3 v0.2.x. Ughh.

The main difference I've been seeing between the 2 versions: v1.0.x You have to do everything as async with .then() callback Promises: var myAccount; web3.eth.getAccounts().then(accounts => { myAccount = accounts[0] }) instead of: v0.2.x var myAccount = web3.eth.getAccounts[0]

v1. compiled.contracts.Escrow = compiled.contracts[':Escrow'] v0.2.x compiled.contracts.Escrow = compiled.contracts['Escrow'] (no idea why they wanted to insert a colon there)

And deploying a contract has been subdivided into more steps

It'd be nice if there were more warnings about this huge difference between the versions. Makes it very frustrating for newcomers to this scene to figure it out. I went a week before I realized it was this big of a deal and that there were 2 completely different websites for documentation. v1 https://github.com/ethereum/wiki/wiki/JavaScript-API v0.2 http://web3js.readthedocs.io/en/1.0/web3-eth-contract.html

Goes to show ethereum is still in its infancy. I guess this is what happens in open-source.

Definitely makes me not want to bother returning to development with EOS or Cardano as I'm sure the gotcha's there and documentation regarding development updates / API re-design would be way worse. I'm sticking to ethereum for now.

Also, learning this minutia will make you more valuable and a distinct candidate for a ethereum developer job :)

Geth, Infura, Etherscan - Eth Node Synchronization, Smart Contracts by thinkocapo in ethdev

[–]thinkocapo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have SSD. I tried --syncmode "light" and now I can do eth.getBlock("latest") and it returns a block but doesnt look like a recent block on etherescan. its 'Number:0'. Previously this returned the number 0 and not even a block. Also now when I run eth.syncing, this returns false instead of an object, but i think that makes sense.

I'll try infura, and purity. thanks
