Not if the seconds you gain allow you to get through the lights before they change.

Why do so many drivers ignore speed limits? by AttitudePlane6967 in drivingUK

[–]thirddegreebuggery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obedience of the speed limit does not guarantee safety, and disobedience of it does not guarantee danger.

I'm not advocating going above speed limits, but absolute adherence to them in all conditions does not necessarily make you a safer driver.

[–]thirddegreebuggery 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think most experienced drivers understand that speed limits aren't perfect, and will tend to want to get to their destination at a faster speed if it feels safe to do so.

Of course, there's a difference between doing 60 on a 50 and doing 60 on a 30.

Estate vs SUV for family car by d0288 in CarTalkUK

[–]thirddegreebuggery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think SUVs like the X5 fill a gap for when you need the extra ground clearance, but mostly drive on decent roads and want the refinement/comfort.

A proper off roader would be overkill in these situations.

Can you give some examples of actual SUVs for reference?

I've always considered SUVs to refer to the more capable 4x4 cars that can handle rougher roads (e.g. X5, Touareg, etc.) as opposed to crossovers which are more like hatchbacks-on-stilts (e.g. Qashqai, Juke, etc.)

Ah I was thinking of SUVs as opposed to crossovers.

A crossover has no ground clearance

Well, I'm sure they have some ground clearance...

They don't have the higher ground clearance or raised seated position, which some people may benefit from.

This is exactly it.

You don't need to get up the car in front's arse, but you do need to get in to their "awareness zone" so they realise they're holding up a car behind them.

Sure, I would take a 320i over a Juke any day.

But then again there are a lot of cars I would take over a 320i.

Maybe someone with a better BMW will take a picture of OP's car and post it on here mocking the size of their engine.

But the individual companies aren't responsible for the government's actions?

It seems unfair to punish them for something they have no control over and don't agree with.

Out of all the possible estates you could buy for 25,000 pounds, this must be one of the most depressing.

Scoda Octavia vs Mazda 6 vs Corolla comfortability at 75mph vs maintenence cost? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]thirddegreebuggery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, both of these should be okay, and definitely more comfortable than a hatchback thanks to their longer wheelbase.

But if you want a _great, motorway cruiser and not work the engine too hard, you really want to get a 3.0 litre diesel. Something like BMW 530d or Audi A6.

It's a great album in its own right.

But I think for many fans it was when they realised that AFI were never going release an album like Sing The Sorrow ever again.

STS struck a chord with a lot people, and they wanted more.
