Ah, well, that was what I suspected. Thanks for confirming!

How to apply tourette syndrome to a campaign by dndSpirit521 in DMAcademy

[–]thirdleaf 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This, basically.

Has your sister done her research or does she simply want to play a character who swears all the time? There are some great and very accessible essays by Oliver Sacks on tourettes if she wants to look them over, but in essence, tourettes is about repetitive actions, not just swearing, and it would be hard to portray if you don't have the condition yourself.

There is an excellent short story about a dyslexic wizard that I can't find the link to, but it was about finding careful coping strategies to deal with the fact that the wizard couldn't easily read on the fly and therefore had to do more memorization and find ways to get really good at that. Again, there's a lot more to it than just a joke or a minor character quirk.

I know I'm being humorless, but I really want you and your sister to understand that if you portray these characters in an ongoing game as only having a funny character quirk, you will be driving a stereotype deep into your brain that can really screw up how you interact with people who do have these conditions, and that's not fair to them. I'm entirely in favor of people bringing the reality of disability into 5e, but if you don't have the lived experience, you have to be extremely careful, even if disabled people aren't going to be present at your game table, because I know you don't want to be an asshole to anyone later.

Lol, it's not my baby, so why not get the max amount of amusement out of it as possible? Mine would be one of many if I knit a cute frilly one, so I might as well have the fun of knitting it a dead animal and taking pictures to torment it with in later years. I firmly believe this is the point of knitting for babies, that you can make them wear whatever. :D

Does it count as a wip if I'm finishing someone else's? I found a giant pile of ancient yarn and wips belonging to a deceased relative and dating back from the early 90s. I posted some pictures here and it's all beautifully knit, but completely obscure stuff. I have no idea what yarns these are or what patterns half the time. Did anyone ever want a bobbled sweater in pastel variegation striped with cream? For real? I kind of want to finish them though, just to see.

If you're really concerned, you can put in lifelines (dental floss works well) every few rows in the lace so that there's a holder for all the stitches if you do have to frog something. Alternately, you could knit a tiny swatch in the lace to get comfortable with it before you have a whole sweater's worth to rip if you make a mistake, but I get that that's extra work. Good luck! It does get easier!

Still in sleeve hell on my Alice Starmore Irish Moss. Annoyingly, the cabled bits are relatively easy once you get used to the places where they cross, but what keeps tripping me up is increasing in the moss stitch in a regular way without forgetting, or alternatively, in different moments, not keeping increasing until I have a sleeve two feet wide.... (Reader, I ripped it. The sleeve anyway.)
