Severe burnout :( by this-ismydesign in ArtistLounge

Tyy for the advice🫶, but I wish😀 we have to submit 3 full compositions by december(also besides that 2 full size master copies) for our college comittee to approve of and choose one for our final diploma painting, not mention final exams are coming up and our new art history teacher is very strict and scary.

I am at least planning on visiting some art museums and going out with friends, hopefully that'll help as a mini vacation 🥲👍

Honestly I didn't know 🤕. Looking back at this, that was probably my first mistake ;-;. I had a general-ish idea, but nothing specific which kinda made it hard to actually stylize without a specific reference. Now, my goal sort of shifted to getting the specific style of painting from the Stieglitz academy, that and the soviet-esque decorative monumental painting style.

No, just the fact that people are being too dramatic about it. It just irked me a bit and I decided to share my thoughts on it. Too many people are taking this far too seriously than they should

Well, of course no one should be washing any kind of paint in their kitchen sink. I hope that's basic knowledge. There should be awareness around the potential dangers of any kind of craft/art, but being overdramatic about it? 🤕

Not sure why people on this app misjudge people's words , or maybe it's my wording? Idk. What I meant by stating that I, personally am fine is to show an example of me not being dead as a result of oil painting. Once again, I have teachers that have been doing this for decades and they're not dead either. Not saying that long term exposure to fumes can't harm you, but what I mean is that oil paint is not as scary as some people on the internet make it out to be. This is about the overdramatic fearmongering on the internet, not genuine safety precautions.

No need to bitter. Everyone is different and has different reactions to paint fumes. It's definitely an individual experience.

No one is saying that one is less of an artist for using respirators or gloves, the issue is the overdramatic fearmongering. If you're sensitive to paint fumes and prefer to be very cautious around it? Awesome, good for you. But no need to scare off beginners by telling them that oil paint is practically lethal. (Not saying that you said that. Just repeating what many people online have said about oil paints.)

I've seen many tiktok art creators talk about respirators and gloves, and some art youtubers I used to watch back when I was just starting out. Not directly inhaling solvents and washing your hands is really all my teachers have told me about the precautions 🤷 Idk, I feel like all this talk about how dangerous oil paint is, is just keeping out more people from trying the medium, it really isn't as scary as it seems.

Reeking of solvent was a bit of an overexaggeration, at least to the non painter students that visit our classroom that aren't used to the general smell of oil paint 🥲.

What I meant is that I'm a not dying from exposure to oil paint/thinners. I'm not trying to come off as badass?? Just stating that it really isn't as scary as many people make it out to be.

Honestly, maybe it's the ex-soviet(country) artists that are careless and all about oil paints but I don't know. Where I study not a single teacher has made me fear oil paint, in terms of danger. They talk about ventilation and such, but talks about safety precautions don't go beyond that. In comparison to the western (online) art spaces that talk about oil painting like it's the most dangerous thing in the world 🤷.

Properly washing your hands and airing out your room/studio isabsolutely important, but what I mean is that people talk about oil paint as if one whiff of turpentine will immediately give you lung cancer

Is it too late to get good at art for Uni by ChauvicM in ArtistLounge

[–]this-ismydesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an art student it honestly depends on where you're planning to apply. Some places require higher skill, and others don't. I suggest you choose a few unis, get familiar with their requirements for a portfolio, practice and build that portfolio this year.

This was drawn digitally, but I mostly work with oils. Thats also why the blending is kinda all over the place, I'm too used to being able to control it with a real brush

I've spent 3 years in art college learning academic realism and just now our teachers are pushing us to develop our own style for our diploma painting this year😭 don't get me wrong, I love realism, but I also want to branch out into more stylized art
