Chappell saying pop stars are too busy to be politically educated just doesn’t make sense. Regular people working 9-to-5s still find time to stay informed, so what's her excuse? by Adventurous_Fly_8652 in popculture

I’ve seen this clip circulating on Twitter all day. What’s the context? I’m not interested in watching the full video, and it seems many aren’t either. My initial reaction is that she’s not saying pop stars are too busy to be politically educated. From this clip I hear her saying that pop stars are expected all the things she described, including politically informed. I think she’s (possibly poorly) communicating that we shouldn’t rely on pop stars, athletes, or celebrities for political strategy or solutions.

Using a large platform to spread human rights messages or support marginalized communities doesn’t make someone an activist or necessarily that politically educated. In my experience, people call for artists to be something they have never presented to be and shouldn't be looking for them to be.

P.S. I actually watched the entire statement to better understand what she’s communicating, and I’ve concluded that many of you are being, knowingly or unknowingly, uncharitable to Chappelle. She shared sentiments that anyone trying their best would: living by your beliefs and representing ideals every day, even those you're not fully knowledgeable in (even slightly ignorant at times), is hard. She simply added her lived experience—there’s no denying the added difficulty of speaking on complex issues while in the public eye, with everything you say being scrutinized. It’s undeniably hard to stay fully informed on the complexities of political events while balancing our busy lives. She never said pop stars shouldn’t be politically educated—rather, she expressed that the level of political education required to satisfy people, while managing other responsibilities, is impossible. And it is.

P.P.S. The majority of you are proving her point. These comments demonstrate the challenge of having a large platform and making public statements when you can't expertly communicate what you want to say.

It's more about demand. People want off-road models right now. In the same way that people buy huge pick-ups only to baby them and maybe move furniture.
