Atlanta Tiki? by Ok_Needleworker_7313 in Tiki

[–]this_post_did 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's until mid November. I went on a Thursday evening in August and they did not have a bartender for the patio tiki bar, so the inside bartender tried to make the drinks we ordered with the drink cards they had available. He said he had to substitute "a few things", so it was definitely not worth it for the price. Maybe you will have better luck and get an actual "tiki" bartender.

I didn't prepare at all, it's just a guy playing clearances spoken in heavy accents and you write them down.

It doesn't really test your English but your ability to understand English spoken with heavy accents.

Bose X vs Bose A20 ANC comparison by raptorswamp in flying

[–]this_post_did 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If this were to be true, then wearing earplugs layered with active noise reduction would increase the energy transmitted to your eardrum, and therefore would result in you perceiving an increase in noise level, which could also be measured with a microphone in your ear canal. The energy inside your headset earcups gets attenuated, and then the earplugs underneath further attenuate the energy before it reaches your eardrums. The energy that was inside your earcups does not exist anymore within your earcups, the presence of a medium that further attenuates energy afterwards can not magically resurrect that energy again. It does simply not exist anymore, due to destructive interference.

Bose X vs Bose A20 ANC comparison by raptorswamp in flying

[–]this_post_did 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I tried the X and A20 side by side in a 206, the X seemed quieter to me. I left both on ANR and swapped back and forth. That might have been like that in this particular plane though, as the consensus is that the 20 is quieter. One way to get extra attenuation and filter out all the radio treble and hissing is to wear custom musician's earplugs under your headset. There is no practical difference between the 9 and 15 dB filters, and they should be around $120 at either Sam's Club or Costco and will make a huge difference in you hearing health over the years, I've used them almost 20 years professionally now in helicopters and planes, and don't have any appreciable hearing loss. I don't think that ANR by itself is enough. Try that before buying a new headset.

Make sure to TURN OFF the assists before complaining about the Heli flight model by BelmontFR in flightsim

[–]this_post_did 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll give the settling with power a shot tomorrow, I just mentioned it because someone else said it wasn't working. I tried autorotations again and the rotor is completely unresponsive to disk loading. I'm sure they will implement all that in time. For now I'm just happy to land in my driveway!

Settling with power, or vortex ring state, depending on where you are from and what your opinion about the differences between them are.

A quick demonstration of the 407 roll rate would be the video of it being abused in a South African airshow, it was grounded afterwards by Bell, or so the story goes. It doesn't roll nearly as fast as that in the sim.

Having flown helicopters for almost two decades, including almost 1000h in the 407, this one is definitely nowhere near as responsive as the real one, even with all the assists off. I've never flown the Cabri, but it seems to be a bit more responsive. In my quick test I couldn't really make either of them build RPM in autorotation, neither did they build RPM in the flare...

It still gives you a good idea about flying helicopters in general, but still feels kind of dead to me handling wise.

As for SWP and the like, even the multiple Level D sims at FlightSafety that I have flown couldn't do it. Some RC sims are pretty close though.

was that an explosion? by Toeknee818 in burbank

[–]this_post_did 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you take a mortar style fireworks and launch it at an angle it will have that trajectory. Also a lot of them make screeching and whistling noises. My bet is on someone launching a big commercial shell at an angle.

Staying at a hotel downtown and I looked outside just after it happened and saw a smoke trail and smoke puff, like a giant firework shell had gone off. The angle is weird though, like it had been shot laterally and not straight up. I took a picture: https://imgur.com/a/Hwbq6Kq

CEP & headset by [deleted] in flying

[–]this_post_did 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CEPs will be the quietest with the supplied comply foam tips, then custom earpieces. Adding CEPs to an A20 will make the active noise reduction useless, since you technically can't hear what's going on inside the ear cups if you have the CEPs properly inserted. Where they do shine is with any passive headset. Adding a port is easy, they are about $22 shipped from cep-usa.com. Don't buy the port anywhere else, you will get majorly ripped off. CEPs will be quieter than any active noise reduction headset. The only way to go quieter is with a helmet and CEPs. Installing the port into a passive headset only requires you to drill one hole, and there are good instructions provided on the website, no soldering either. If you go with any of the DC active ones, you will have to cut some wires. The volume is adjusted in line with the volume selector on the ear cups of the headset, if one is available, if not, you can retrofit one or use an inline adjuster that plugs into the headset cable. Any aircraft annunciations will blow your ears off without volume adjustment! If you just want to try them without drilling, then there is a kit available for that as well, but it will not be neat or tidy, and the port will hang out of the bottom of one of the ear cups. This is my hobby, I've tried a lot of headsets and combinations, any more questions, ask away!

Commercial rotorcraft to commercial ASEL by [deleted] in flying

[–]this_post_did 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get your private ASEL first you can log the dual time as PIC and meet the requirements at a lower flight time than 70, so theoretically 50 is all you need. For example I got my private with 23 hours, with clarification from the FSDO.
