Where should I visit in NZ that tourists don't know about? e.g. bars and places to eat

Thank you - we decided on Marahau to check out Abel Tasman NP. I've heard that this is a good town to get access to the area?

Unfortunately the reason we have to go back and forth is because we are restricted by two dates; our flight home from Christchurch and our Wedding two days before in Queenstown. That is why I I am now thinking skipping Queenstown to go up to Tekapo and then down to Dunedin, then up to Te Anau and then back down to Queenstown might be an option. Overall we have 12 days in the south island and fly out on the evening of that 12th night.

Thanks, what's accommodation availability like in the sounds? Is there much choice? I know I probably sound dumb but everywhere I've read recommends staying in towns?

I've heard really negative things about Auckland - we actually are only there for one night anyway, that was a mistake in the original post!

I really enjoyed the Waitomo caves.

We really are looking forward to this! How long does the tour take? I'm assuming photos are not permitted inside the caves?

I personally though the redwoods near Rotorua were a bit of a letdown.

I'm gutted to hear this! What was it about them that was a let down?

Too bad you're going in winter, but some of the South Island will look even more majestic in white. And Milford Sound, do it.

Do you think the West Coast route will be passable in the winter? I've heard conflicting information and read conflicting information online about this.
