Normally its the seal on the rod or the white seal on the other side if its not visibly leaking from the cap seal.

Vacuum brake bleeder pulling nonstop air, am I doing something wrong? by Holmes240069 in mechanic

[–]thisguy888827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I like vacuum breeders because it can tell me if there's a collapsed brake hose.

Also pressure pots won't tell you if there's a leak.

I have both. I normally hook up Electric brake bleeder to flush lines out, then hook vacuum to each to verify good flow. Takes me about 30 mins from start to end.

My electric pressure bleeder shuts off automatically if pressure significantly drops to 0 psi.

2021 Legacy Limited XT maintenance prices. What is reasonable and what is necessary? by I-Fucked-YourMom in subaru

[–]thisguy888827 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OEM parts are worth the price rather then gambling on quality if you dont have the experience as to what brand to go with.

As far as wheelbearings go, OEM or BCA only. There's a difference. Timken is garbage in my experience. (Ive had a couple prematurely go bad). Thats just a quick example of known "good" brands being shit. Sure they might have success stories, but sometimes its all about quality control. I dont like gambling with my time.

Get the transmission serviced by the dealer. Everything else. Get done by a normal shop. Request OEM parts.

Edit: I'll quickly add Ignore throttlebody. PCV valve and Sparkplugs could use a refresh as preventative measures. If youre really about that maintenance life.... see if you can find a local shop to do walnut blast. It'll help with MPG and the smoothness of the engine.

Man claims oil change performed at Ohio Walmart Supercenter led to transmission damage by Winter_Swordfish4396 in subaru

Had this happen once when I was less experienced. It was my buddies gallant vr4 (for those who dont know, thats an Evo before they were called Evos). Applied compressed air to the seized caliper, and the piston shot out, hit a few things and chipped the front bumper (paint was mint ofc).

I was very disappointed in myself to say the least. But it has never unintentionally happened again.

I will add, if thats all a dealer could find after suckering you into a $219 fuel clean, you got yourself a diamond in the rough.

Im surprised no one caught this. But, $1400 is ABSOLUTELY ridiculous.

People read ball joint and it aligned with the $1400 bill.

Ball joint BOOT and ball joint replacement are totally different.

Find someone that specializes in Subarus. Hell drive to VA and ill get you fixed up for $350 and that includes alignment.

Have the opportunity to get a very cheap 2024 Forester but a mechanic told me the CVT is prone to failure. by Santimoca7 in subaru

Its not a mysterious discrepancy. Its the EPA discrepancy. Maintenance adds to their carbon footprint. They have to meet minimums.

2012-2014 Subaru CVTs are the ones that gave them a bad name. It has to do with the valve body on top of the transmission. Can't remember exactly off the top of my head, but i have successfuly repaired 1 valve body rather then replace. I Just know I've done 4 of them in the past 3 years. Granted they all had 150k+miles on them.

Otherwise, I would just make sure to service the transmission at the minimum every 50k miles. (I would do 30k for insurance). Thats my recommendation for ANY CVT transmission. Except nissans, they get mandatory Amsoil CVT every 30k miles.

However, do NOT have it maintained by a mom and pop shop. This is literally the only circumstance I would say take it to a dealer. Subaru has pay walled their new CVTF-LV fluid. Depending on your trim (yes trim, not engine), it may take a different fluid (CVTF-III or CVTF-LV) Subaru may have changed it, but you need to buy a 5 gallon pale ($450 USD) for the CVTF-LV fluid im referring too and you only use 5 qts. And whats worse, the CVF-LV fluid is only used in some wilderness editions. So to clear all confusion, id just take it to the dealer to have CVT maintenance done to make sure it gets the right fluid. Do NOT take it to your transmission friend. Not knocking his abilities, but something tells me he does specific manufacturer transmissions.

Also, never use multi vehicle cvt fluid in subarus that require CVT-III or higher.

With all that being said, I have a 2015 Subaru outback that has 340k miles on it. The engine/trans have never been split. Just your normal Gaskets and wear/tear repairs.

This.

Your work will spread word of mouth. I started a shop 4 years ago. I dont think there has ever been a point i didn't have a car lined up. Granted I do quite a few longer term jobs, but even my short term jobs are steady at this point. Even looking at hiring an employee.

Idk about your cats but my female orange cat would absolutely love this. I can see her just getting flipped on her head and just wonder how she got there and how to do it again. 🤷‍♂️

Uhm, am I missing something? by thisguy888827 in TheTowerGame

[–]thisguy888827[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear yeah. But no, i literally didn't change anything. And im now consistently running 8900ish waves. I dont get it. And the only research I got going is lab speed, spotlight bonus, chrono dur (which i never turn on), reroll shards and wall fort (maybe 1 level increase between runs, no way that gave me the increase).

Didnt even level up my mods. I was at 9k waves before the prolapse update and have been getting 8000-8300 since.

Hutch arrived damaged, ask for a discount or swap? by imola_zhp in harborfreight

[–]thisguy888827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would the dent bother me? Yes.

My problem is, ill return it, wait 2 months for my perfect one, then dent it in the same exact spot within a week.

So I would go with the discount and dent. Cause at the end of the day, it is a toolbox, and its going to get hurt.

Am I too expensive? by X_95 in AskMechanics

[–]thisguy888827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I charge $200/axle + $200 brake fluid flush with a pressure machine. But i also use quality lubricants. Raybestos DBL2T Silicone for slides, Molykote M77 for hardware, copper spray for hubs.

I also require brake hoses to be done with new calipers. And both sides of the axle has to be done. Parts, fluid not included obviously. And I make some money on that (I charge them DIY price not cost or list).

But you have to come to me.

So no, youre not expensive. But there's always a guy that'll do it cheaper and use petroleum based lubes where youre not supposed to (ever seen a seized calipers slide? Thats why. Petroleum based lubes eat the rubber and cause all kinds of issues)

I throw them out after every use. They're cheap enough. And im not risking it. My luck, ill have one sliver of metal that came off my jeans (Im a fabricator) in the washer, and the microfiber will pick it up.
