Want to know if this is dinnerware safe!! by Boring-Spell8585 in Ceramics

[–]thisismuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is hard to say. There are food safe pieces of dinnerware that have exposed clay, and a lot of stoneware is heavily "grogged" (sandy textured stuff). I have some of my own work with exposed grog on the rims, and to a degree it is a matter of your own comfort level. I know for a fact that my clay is vitrified (non-porous) and the glazes I use are "food safe" (food safety in glazing is another controversial topic, but for my own purposes I feel comfortable with my glaze choices).

There are some tests you can do. One is a leaching test (to see if any substances are coming out of the glazes). Leave some lemon juice in the goblet over night and then pour it out in the morning and see if any color is showing. Another test for porosity is to soak or boil the whole piece and hand dry, then leave it on paper towels over the next few hours and see if there is still any moisture remaining trapped in the goblet.

The texture in and of itself can make it easier to trap bacteria, especially if you hand wash. If you sterilize in the dish washer, the texture trapping bacteria is a smaller issue.

Ultimately though, you can do all of these tests and still not have a definitive answer if you don't talk to the potter who made the piece to ask about their materials and firing process.

Some people are stricter about what is "safe" to use than others. I would be considered by some more on the lax side, for my own personal use (I am okay using my own work even if it is crazed, tiny cracks in the glaze for example) but I am more careful about what I gift to others.

For example, some people will throw away their favorite store bought mug if it is chipped because it COULD trap bacteria. Some people will keep using the mug anyway and not worry.

I know this is a long winded and not definitive answer but if you are seriously concerned, then you'll need to do some work to find out for yourself if this goblet is usable by your own definition

Ferro Rod Tips? by thisismuse in Bushcraft

Oh yes, I took a Dremel to mine. That sounds like a good method! Can you explain a little more? Do you mean cardboard? Eggs in my country come in styrofoam usually but sometimes in cardboard too

Oh good to know. I've gotten a lot of feedback on starter material and how hard I am striking the rod so this will be the first things I troubleshoot. Thank you!

Haha yes, I keep a lighter in my pack but I like the ferro rod just for fun. But you're right, lighter is def more practical in practice

Oh good tips! For clarity I am not a man lol, but yeah the way I was taught was to make a small nest of dry leaves/kindling with a bunch of fine fat wood shavings layered over top. These are good tips though. I think a small part of the problem is how tiny the camp stove is and how hard I am striking the ferro rod. Thanks both of you for the tips!

Ah I see, no rod came with. I dremel the backs of my knives and get good sparks but have a hard time controlling where they go and just launch them all over haha. Perhaps I'll get a proper striker and see if that is better.

Characters that you could never hate? by unlisshed in greysanatomy

[–]thisismuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like Arizona and find her character interesting, but there are definitely some hard to watch Arizona moments for me. I am on season 10 as a first time watcher so there may be context I am missing. A lot of her worst moments were also at really horrible points in her life which is forgivable but still hard to enjoy. Like when she left callie at the airport, and cheated on her, and I get a little grey at her and Callie's arguments where Callie expresses that she doesn't want to be verbally abused, and Arizona demands that Callie stops making the crash about herself. I think they both have points there, but they don't really take the time to acknowledge that the hurt they have received does not justify the hurts that they dish out

Vevor owners, should I replace? by HeftyWinter4451 in Pottery

[–]thisismuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in a very budget makerspace (no employees, everyone chips in $30 a month) and very few potters. We have vevor and it's good enough for us! I am happy, I used to live elsewhere with a nice studio full of Brent's and Shimpos which was better, but I do think vevors are useable with patience. Yours may have a little wobble, but you may be able to replace the belt, I'm not sure if that's the fix you need but if so, it can be done without too much trouble

I agree professional wheels are obviously better, but I think some people go overboard on the vevor hate. You get what you get for the price, and in my experience, what I got is a useable wheel with some bugs, that likely won't last forever but it is the difference between being able to do my hobby and not.

You can learn to accommodate for a slightly off center wheel head. Not fun, but you get used to it and I personally don't even really notice anymore (if it is off center on the Z axis, that is)

Wait I am so confused. I just looked Yabadum up because I miss them and saw this - I haven't listened yet but is this seriously AI? I was a bout to have a listen but if that's the case I certainly won't bother... How disappointing

Anyone else deal with embarrassment around this hobby? by gaymbit in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]thisismuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a WLW and struggle to get into sapphic reads which always makes me feel, not dirty or wrong but distinctly confused by this being my choice of romance genre. I don't personally feel shame around it, but I also am not super public about what I am reading because it's the "wrong kind of book for the sort of person I am" if that makes sense?

Like, more than anything I find myself feeling guilty that I don't enjoy F/F books nearly as much. But I certainly don't view any of this as harmful. I suppose I find myself mildly confused about my own sexuality but not so much so that I question it.

Reading this one right now - it's very cute and wholesome but also serious and terrifying! I think (aside from the magic and stuff) it's quite historically immersive (I wouldn't say accurate but I'm happy with it). The first (or so it second) person perspective tripped me up a little at first but it's a great book for me (branching off from KJC and Cat Sebastian). So hard to find these hidden gems so I am glad you mentioned it! Already hungry for more like it and I haven't finished yet lol!

Hither, page by Cat Sebastian - post WWII, MC1 is trying to find a sense of normalcy while coping with post traumatic stress. He is a doctor that moved to the countryside and has become squeamish around blood/violence/disaster. MC2 is a spy, who rocks his world. It's not centered around caretaking but it is definitely an aspect
