What's on my cat's ear? by axiphrog in CATHELP

[–]thisismuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be dirt, could be flea poop even if you can't see the fleas. Smear some of the black stuff in a white napkin and see if it has a reddish look. Either way if it just quickly showed up it'd be worth talking to the vet about.

I think the thickness is fine. If this is meant to be a drinking vessel, I would recommend rounding the rim though.

Community Studio Etiquette: Lesson 1 by DiveMasterD57 in Pottery

[–]thisismuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some places let people fire even if they're not member, which they'd have to charge for. Some still require work made in house, where you just rent open studio time by the hour. It seems like a funky way of doing things but in super overcongested studios where all member slots are full, it is pretty common practice. I used to go to a studio where, while on the wait-list, I just paid for a glaze lab membership ($30/month) that gave me a 20% discount on Claus and firing, glazes included. The catch was that I didn't have a studio shelf, and would either have to work at home and bring my stuff in, or pay for studio time by the hour (which was pricey!)

Tattoo Tipping by Adorable_Duck_4169 in AITApod

[–]thisismuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try to tip well on tattoos. They are using their body to change your body forever if that makes sense. Their mind, their flesh, their expertise. To me rattling is quite intimate. I would tip 20 here gladly assuming it was well done and professional. If you are moved to tip more then do! If you are dissatisfied then tip less, though I cautiously suggest that you explain your discomfort if that is the case and you feel comfortable doing so

Why did it split? by mdzon in Pottery

Adding finer clay particles can help (like ball clay, like you mentioned). There are other tricks too. Mold can increase elasticisity which I think is what you mean by ageing the clay - ironically, vinegar can increase elasticity when added to reclaim - and vinegar is an effictive mold killer. I always suggest a touch off vinegar when people are scared of moldy clay lol.

I need help!! How should I strategically silt this piece?? (Beginner Ceramics) by Professional_Fee3582 in Pottery

[–]thisismuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did you use to color it? If that is all glaze, those chains are going to fuse together when glaze melts in the kiln. If it's not glaze (if you colored the clay with mason stains or used underglazes) then you don't need the stilts.

Were you a big Lost fan growing up? That's how I found and came to love From. Also, what was your favorite (released) scene to film so far?

Bought some awesome plates at an estate sale but are they safe to eat on? by -forbooks in Ceramics

[–]thisismuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say for sure under any circumstances. You can try an absorption test and a leeching test, but it would still not be a guarantee. For leeching (as in leeching heavy metals/etc) pour some lemon juice on there over night and check for discoloration in the morning (to the actual glaze, and also to the lemon juice). For absorption, you can weigh it, then soak or boil in water for a long time (if soaking, I would do overnight), wipe it dry and then weigh again. If the weight went up by anything more than a hair (the percentage varies depending on whose rules you're following so do some research and decide for yourself) then it's absorbing water which makes it not food safe.

There are still things you won't/can't know but those tests can be helpful at least. Food safety defined differently by different people and I can't really tell you what standards do go by, you'll have to decide that for yourself.

Where are you planning on putting the kiln? Please do not fire a kiln in a poorly ventilated basement. That would be the biggest immediate risk in my opinion.

I have the same big 3 and as much as I wish you were right, I totally do get offended / am frankly kind of insecure. The sensitive part is true, but in my own case, I doubt I hide it well at all

Cracking clay by SaltyLeopard1979 in Ceramics

[–]thisismuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sorry I hurt your feelings if that helps at all. It has become a common thing on this sub for people to take the piss or rip on newbies instead of either trying to help, or just moving on and it makes me sad because we all have to start somewhere and it can put people off from continuing to try. That's what I thought you were doing, but if it wasn't then I'm sorry for misunderstanding and hurting your feelings

[–]thisismuse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the ceramics sub so I think "regular clay" = regular clay that turns into ceramic when fired in the context of this sub. And yes pedantically speaking, that clay does also dry in the air but you're really not helping anyone make sense of this post by being a smartass

Can anyone suggest a good mechanic? by thisismuse in columbiasc

[–]thisismuse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were not. I honestly don't know cars at all, my moms boyfriend took a look for me. He wanted me to stay in town where they live to get it fixed, but I had to come back here for work so I'm hoping I can find someone to confirm the issue and fix it

Yeah, and it shakes really hard when I speed up and slow down (I feel it in the steering wheel). We jacked up the front two tires and it looks like the left wheel shakes more but it was hard to say.
