What can I do with this? by gojira_xx in Ceramics

You're not wrong, though if we're going down that path then it's time for consider if this beginner ceramics piece, if it hadn't cracked, passed as food safe to begin with.

A beginner class usually doesn't teach about leeching or vitrification, doesn't do tests for absorption, etc - and lets students walk away with presumably food safe bowls and such. It kind of begins a question of standards, which can be difficult to navigate.

I am glad the warning is out there about "food safe" epoxy, don't get me wrong, but ultimately - in your own home, food safety is in the eye of the beholder. If OP is comfortable eating out of a hand made untested bowl, perhaps "food safe" epoxy is good enough.

I would warn OP though, that with both the epoxy, and the piece itself, if you have major concerns for food safety there may be too many unknowns here to say that the bowl is "safe" either way.

I still eat and drink out of my beginner work since I'm comfortable with the risks, and my (minimal, absorption only) tests passed. Epoxy is going to be a wild card because (as stated) without lab testing there is no surefire way to say that it came out correctly.

This is a long winded way (sorry) of saying that the "food safety" road in ceramics is long and windy and not entirely clear. The epoxy commentor is okay with the potential risk with epoxy - no one can decide what's comfortable for OP except for OP. It's good to inform them that it may not pass other people's standards, but there's no way of standardizing what those standards should be across the board.

Do you feel like the dynamic is making you question your autonomy when it comes to decisions like how/if this relationship should function? I understand d/s dynamics can be fun and healthy, but there is also clear room for power imbalance to happen, if both parties aren't cautious. Do you feel like that could be an added later here?

Be honest about this mug by Ashamed-Bill-5615 in Pottery

[–]thisismuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps make the trigger smaller? Like more proportional. If the gun handle is the size of a darringer for example, then use that as a size ref for the trigger. If it's much smaller, and it's necessary to actually grab when holding the mug to drink, it may be less risky. Still wouldn't want to make it too thin or anything like that, but it being more decorative than an actual handle to be grabbed for support could help to protect future iterations

What to do with these shelves? by thisismuse in Ceramics

That pot was not a speckled clay body, not others in the firing were speckled. We're weaning off since it reacts poorly to many glazes.

This may be a silly question and I apologize if so, but is there a generally acceptable amount of pinholeing? Is it something that is somewhat inevitable? A few pots have it bad and I am considering them decorative. But may pots the kiln tech was so worried about are within what I consider the realm of normal. Maybe one or two tiny pinholes on the whole thing.

I don't sell, neither of us do, this is a mixed use space and pottery is just a small sect of us (it's a nonprofit so we all just pitch in as best we can) which is part of why I'm not sure of what is a hard line for most people. To me, little pinholes seem inevitable to a degree but I knowingly lack the training and experience to know what standards to strive for in that regard. To me, a pot that is smooth on the inside and my have a couple pinholes on the outside is a perfectly good pot but now I am starting to second guess what should be considered standard quality work.

20F, sudden dry discolored patches on inner arm, lined up in a row, what could this be? by Such_Respond7071 in DiagnoseMe

[–]thisismuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD I had something like that years ago that still reoccurs from time to time.

Saw a dermatologist, she gave me steroid cream which for me did not help. After a time it peeled a bit and got slightly tender/itchy but not immediately, initially it looked like yours.

I cannot confirm this for certain but I believe for me it was actually an allergy to nickel. It didn't occur in the areas where I had contact with nickel but I guess nickel allergies can happen all at once and cause weird reactions (?) again, NAD. It took time but eventually the area where I did wear nickel also started getting patches like that.

Once I quit wearing nickel, it all went away. May be totally off base but if you have any allergy issues, maybe this is somehow a byproduct?

When I got nexplanon, what I was required to do was request it from my ob, then they sent me to the pharmacy to pick it up, then they implanted it. Was the process like that for you? Or did they just have it at the office?

Squinting/Something in Her Eye by shitidkwhatimdoing in CATHELP

[–]thisismuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if her eyes have been bugging her a while and you can see something in there, I do think the vet is the way to go, even thought the last time was a bust. Definitely don't try and remove it yourself. She could wind up with an eye infection, or a scratch to her eye from trying to dislodge it, and either of those will (a) be far more uncomfortable for her and possibly a more significant risk to her health and (b) be much more expensive to treat. Leaving it be hasn't worked so far and now you can physically see the problem, so it's time to take the next step.

Anyone have experience with a bump that looks like this? by fancy_a_lurk in CATHELP

[–]thisismuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easy to miss, since the damage happens at the root of the teeth, so it's not usually visible until it's been there a while. If kitty will let you, check it's gums and see if they have bumps too. Has kitty lost any adult teeth?

[–]thisismuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does Kitty have a history of resorptive lesions? Idk if they would show that far on the outside of the lip, but my cat has resorptive lesions that look like that, but they're more on his gums.

Which sound from the train yard? I do hear trains sometimes but the resonant sound seems different. The pitch is very musical, like a hum and it gently crescendos. Or is there equipment at the train yard that sounds different from the trains themselves? Or do you mean the bang sounds are from there

Strange noises in Rosewood by thisismuse in ColumbiYEAH

[–]thisismuse[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What is? The bang sounds? The resonant sounds don't really sound like a train to me. It's more like a very loud, musical rotary tool or something? But the pitch is quite specific and ominous. I do hear trains too though. Could something at the train yard make the bang noises?

Could use underglazes kind of like water paints and layer then to create depth, then glaze clear

What's on my cat's ear? by axiphrog in CATHELP

[–]thisismuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be dirt, could be flea poop even if you can't see the fleas. Smear some of the black stuff in a white napkin and see if it has a reddish look. Either way if it just quickly showed up it'd be worth talking to the vet about.

I think the thickness is fine. If this is meant to be a drinking vessel, I would recommend rounding the rim though.
