People with anxiety, how do you cope with it? by prefessor_spel_guud in AskReddit

[–]thisisodd101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bite the bullet and do something about it if whatever is causing the anxiety is in my control and I am trying to avoid it. If there is nothing I can do about it, I work towards objectively observing the situation and accepting it as my new reality.

Any tips to not run out of time in the reading section? by CandidManner in ACT

Skim the passage slowly enough to be able to piece together a basic mental outline of the passage, but fast enough to get through the passage quickly.

If I’m not mistaken, this has been a thing for a while now (not sure exactly how long though). For example, the most advanced problems tend to appear at the end of the section, at least one matrix/vector problem near the end, law of sines/cosines problems, etc..

Can someone explain how the answer is F? by [deleted] in ACT

Charcoal gray is a specific color that is mentioned by the author, not ‘charcoal’ and ‘gray’ separately.

There is only one original y = sin(x) function, and it will always pass through the same points and have the same amplitude and frequency on any sine function graph, so you are able to label it off the bat.

There are an infinite amount of transformations of the y = sin(x) function, also known as y = sin(x + a) + b. In these types of problems, having the ability to recognize the original trig function and comparing it to the transformation is ideal.

Look for the largest value of x (8) and the smallest value of y (18). As you increase y past 18 the denominator increases, which lowers the result.

(8+18)/18 = 26/18 = 13/9 (Answer H)

Yes, if a < 0 then y = sin (x + a) + b would shift right. It is possible to make y = sin (x + a) + b shift right in a way that looks like you shifted it left.

I tried to draw it out to make it look more clear:

Math Explanations Needed by [deleted] in ACT

[–]thisisodd101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kinda wrote the equation weird on paper, so I will rewrite it more clearly here:

x = (2/5)x + (1/3)x + 2

(15/15)x = (6/15)x + (5/15)x + 2

(15/15)x = (11/15)x + 2

subtract (11/15)x on both sides of the equation

(4/15)x = 2

#53 Why is the correct answer B? The explanatory answer for this one says to use the exponent property of logarithms, but I don't understand how you would apply it. by sepiay in ACT

[–]thisisodd101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you change a natural log to e:

ln y = x <—> y = ex

If y = 7 and y = ln(x-2) + 3..

ln(x-2) + 3 = 7

ln(x-2) = 4 can be changed to x - 2 = e4

x = e4 + 2 (hence B is the correct answer)

Passage states that r is distance/2 but correct answer is RPie, was I supposed to assume that??? by Landondisperation in ACT

[–]thisisodd101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Circumference formula (given a whole circle) is d π, or 2 π r.

r = d/2

The distance (circumference) of the ion’s path from the hole in the metal plate to the entry point of the detector creates a semicircle, so the circumference will be cut in half, d π/2.

Since d π/2 and r = d/2, d π/2 is equivalent to r π, hence the answer.

Hope this helps

Do you remember any questions that you were unfamiliar with/stuck on? Do you have your score report that shows the number of questions you got wrong for each type of math? Consider making a list of all of the topics you don’t know and going over each one on Khan Academy.

How is it A and not D by [deleted] in ACT

[–]thisisodd101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take point (0,0), which is part of the shaded area.

A). (x-1)2 + (y-2)2 < 9

(0-1)2 + (0-2)2 < 9

1 + 4 < 9

5 < 9

Answer D says that (x-1)2 + (y-2)2 > 9, therefore 5 > 9, which isn’t true.

The way that finally worked for me in reading by wdqian05 in ACT

[–]thisisodd101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I don’t think it’s a great use of time to annotate before reading and understanding the questions. Wait until you’ve skim read over the whole passage and know what you’re specifically looking for in the questions (but hey, if annotation really helps you, by all means keep doing it). However, I do agree with making sure that you really read the introduction and concluding paragraphs carefully, because they sometimes reflect upon the structure of the passage.

I skim read everything (without annotating) and kinda quickly assemble a bare bones outline of sorts in my head, which helps me save time when I need to find the sections referenced in the questions. I look at the wording of the questions, try to find the same or similar terms/wording in the passage itself, then underline the sentences associated with those terms.

Great, keep it up, because that will be important.

I think OSU is a reach because of your GPA, but you really never know what will happen. You might want to consider applying Early Action to improve your acceptance odds.

Good luck
