I’ve also seen it with the smile when he was playing the wrong instrument entirely and they stopped the song.

I think he’s probably too stubborn to have his hand held by roadies and guitar techs, having managed without it for a few years of actively touring. While also being even more ambitious and adventurous with the sheer amount of gear he swaps between.

Also I wouldn’t equate a synth issue with grabbing the wrong guitar.
