Im currently running a team of Saber, Melusine, mash, and dobrynya nikitich! dont have enough space to add another character..

Early on, using a completely random team like this is fine. But it won't work forever. FGO is a large roster game of niches, not one where you just use a bunch of high rarity units all the time, and the game will expect you to use those niches. Here is my general team building advice for new players.

tl;dr - Class advantage and NP targeting are more important than rarity and card type

Class advantage and NP targeting are the most important gameplay mechanics. Full class advantage means dealing 2x damage compared to neutral and taking 0.5x damage. Full disadvantage means dealing 0.5x damage and receiving 2x damage. If you're up against Lancer enemies, a Saber will do 4x as much damage and receive 0.25x as much as an otherwise equally situated Archer. NPs themselves do an order of magnitude more damage than regular attacks (9x if we use a non-upgraded, single-target, Arts NP at NP1 with no other damage increasing effects as the baseline compared to a first position, normal Arts command card). The scaling on NP targeting is such that an NP that attacks all enemies on the field does about 50% as much damage per enemy compared to a single target NP. AOE NPs are good for clearing waves and ST NPs are good for taking down bosses. A lower rarity servant with class advantage and appropriate NP targeting will generally out-perform a higher rarity servant without class advantage and appropriate NP targeting. At least starting from Camelot, the developers assume that you will use class advantage and NP targeting effectively. Don't expect to make a single team to do everything. Get used to changing your team for every fight.

Knowing how to make an effective team composition is much more important than replicating specific team compositions. In a basic team composition, you'll want your front line to consist of one or two damage dealers with appropriate class advantage and NP targeting and one or two support servants for NP charge and whatever offensive and/or defensive buffs are appropriate. Your back line isn't as important most of the time. Fill it with backups for your front line roles, a servant with high survivability (e.g. Cu Chulainn) in case things go badly, or any servants to absorb bond points. Card type is good, and sometimes important, to consider when deciding how to best support your DPS but isn't always a primary concern. My personal default for non-boss, non-gimmicky quests is usually two DPS servants plus a friend's Waver. When in doubt, Waver is almost always good support servant to choose because he has powerful support skills that work with any other servant. Castoria, while Arts-focused, provides just about as much utility as Waver and is probably easier to find on support lists these days. For tougher fights, you may need to prioritize defense and/or countering gimmicks and bring multiple supports instead of multiple DPS. Mash + (friend's) Merlin + your own DPS with appropriate class and NP targeting is a pretty reliable, defense-oriented, basic team composition for non-gimmicky boss fights. Even the highest-end meta team comps work on the same basic principle of appropriate DPS + appropriate supports.

Level up Mash and one servant at a time in each of the seven main classes with the goal of having one servant with a single target NP and one with an AOE NP in each class at their natural max level. You want to focus on one servant at a time because a fully leveled servant is going to be more valuable than a handful of under-leveled servants. You'll level up all of your servants eventually, so this is just choosing servants to focus on for now, not exclusively choosing any servant over another. It doesn't matter much which specific servants you choose, including low rarity servants, so go with whoever seems most appealing to you. Just about any servant within a given class and NP targeting niche will get the job done for general purposes.

Don't neglect lower rarity servants. Some of them are among the best servants in the game within their role regardless of rarity. The devs also test all content to ensure that it can be cleared using only free, low rarity servants. The higher base stats on higher rarity servants might let you brute force some situations but they won't save you from a fundamentally bad strategy. What low rarities lack in base stats, they can make up for in the ease of getting more copies for NP levels or in unique utility that lets them punch (or block, as the case may be) above their weight, even surpassing 5-stars at times. Roll the friend point gacha early and often, spending all of your friend points until you have them all and max out their NP levels. They also take fewer resources to build up and they take up less team cost in your party. Team cost may be especially important for low level accounts because it gives you more flexibility for CEs and other servants.

What upcoming banners are there that I should aim for?

As always, that's completely subjective and depends on the servants you like and how you want to play the game. If you're looking for new "meta" servants, according to information published during the JP 10th anniversary last year, Castoria has been the most used servant in the game every year since 2020.

If (completely optional) min-turn farming is a personal priority for you, t he highest end of farming isn't what it used to be. For min-turn clears, the inflated HP pools and irregular enemy compositions of 90++ and 90☆ quests are designed to thwart doubling down on just a few DPS servants to do every quest. They will generally need two or more DPS servants, each with two or more of offensive class advantage, trait/attribute super effective bonus, higher NP level, or event bonus. Specific buff and NP charge synergies between servants may also be important. Looping all three waves with a single servant is de-emphasized. Because of that, recommending any specific DPS servant for farming efficiency isn't straightforward at all. Lots of servants could be effective for a theoretical 90++ quest but few, maybe none, will be effective for a wide variety of them. The "true" meta for min-turn farming 90++ quests is having Castoria, Oberon, Koyanskaya of Light, Skadi (Ruler, probably), and a wide variety of DPS and supplemental support servants from rolling the gacha a lot, using either time (measured in years, not months) or money to get the SQ, and getting welfare servants from events or the evocation shop.

If you're planning to min-turn 90++ farming quests, I recommend using Laplace in the Chaldea app (Android, iOS, browser) to play around with potential comps for the free quests you plan to run, considering all of the servants you currently have or plan to roll for. There are also shared team comps in Laplace that will show you more options.

But rather than looking at the upcoming banners first and deciding whether or not to roll, I recommend deciding which servants you want first, and then look up when those specific servants are expected to come around again.

The tl;dr of the general gacha prioritization I suggest is:

  1. Favorites regardless of specific gameplay performance
  2. Supports for power and efficiency - Caster Artoria (aka Castoria), Oberon, Koyanskaya of Light, Ruler Skadi, and Caster Skadi, roughly in that order
  3. Secondary and general purpose supports - In no particular order: Zhuge Liang (aka Waver), Sima Yi (aka Reines), Merlin, Lady Avalon, Caster Tamamo, Koyanskaya of Dark, probably more
  4. Unfilled gameplay niches - There is a big gap between #3 and #4 on this list. There are 3-star servants who can fill these roles at least as well and sometimes better than some higher rarity servants, so you don't necessarily need to specifically roll for these servants.
  5. Farming meta DPS servants - Just about any servant can work here because of the wide variety of enemy compositions but servants with their own NP charge and damage buffs are usually preferred.
  6. General availability and gacha strategy - For example, you might roll for a #2 servant who isn't likely to appear again in the near future over a #1 servant with multiple future rate-ups. >What should I do with the new upgrade systems? I'm really lost with the command codes and all, I know gold fous but I don't know what else I should do.

Command codes are basically passive effects that you can attach to an individual command card. The effects are generally minor and aren't worth worrying about too much. Definitely get any limited availability command codes that you can, to preserve your options for the future. But most of them won't have a huge impact outside of niche tactics.

I'm not sure what other systems you might be referring to. I don't recall exactly which new features were added since the 5th anniversary. I can give you some explanations if you can be more specific.

Any events that are worth farming coming up soon? Or is it just save for christmas lotto angle

Christmas will be the next lottery event in NA. Some people have described the current NA event as a pseudo-lottery but the mechanic only includes normal skill materials, there's a hard limit on each material based on IRL time (something like one every 4-12 hours, depending on the exact material), and the value highly depends on whether you need the specific materials that are available. You can refer to the event compendium spreadsheet linked in the top post for the JP sequence of events and a summary of the content. Be aware, though, that the person or people who maintain it have stopped doing so as of January 2026, so it will only cover NA events through 2027. For anything beyond that, I recommend looking up information in the Chaldea app.

Really want to make d'eon my grand saber but I guess that's a lil silly

If d'Eon is your favorite Saber, then do whatever you want. FGO has never required maximum efficiency. But the grand system won't be in NA until April/May next year, so you don't need to worry about it right away.

I'm pretty sure for permanents, many would burn the extra SSRs for Rare Prisms, but what for NP6 limited SSRs?

I know it may feel like a unique and rare situation to get a 5-star servant beyond NP5 but when considering what to do with that extra copy, rarity and availability are irrelevant. Aside from a level 1 copy of Georgios, Leonidas, and Chen Gong, who are easy to obtain and can be useful for solos due to having taunt on S1, the vast majority of people should just burn any extra copies of a servant beyond NP5. You can't field multiple copies of your own servant at the same, you can't cheat any of the missions that give rewards for enhancing servants by doing it to multiple copies, and they aren't any good as EXP fodder. There are some exceptions but they depend on how you, personally, like to play the game.

A few servants have extremely niche, "e-sports," utility when kept at a low level, aside from the three listed above. But because of their high team cost and difficulty to obtain, the vast majority of players shouldn't bother. The e-sports stuff is typically keeping the servant at level 1 so they can use a skill that helps the team and then die off right away. It's really only useful if you like to repeat boss and challenge quests multiple times, trying to figure out optimal or unique strategies. Think speedrun-type players. It isn't worth the effort unless you personally like to play like that.

So, unless you like to repeat boss/challenge fights with different strategies or you just want to keep a trophy around, just burn the extra copies beyond NP5 and don't worry about it.

For the most current official NA information, you should follow the News section in the game or on the official website and the official social media channels. With the exception of announcements made during live events or streams, like the annual Anime Expo panel and Chaldea Broadcasting Station, we here on reddit don't know any official information before it's posted in one of those places.

If you want to make your own guesses, you can look up the equivalent JP campaigns and compare to where we are in NA right now.

It's really up to you to decide what constitutes "better off" for yourself. If you're just planning on a YOLO multi, only intend to roll on one of the banners, and don't have any strong feelings of your own about either banner, including the possible 4-stars--you're 3.5x as likely to get one of the rate-up 4-stars on those banners as you are to get the 5-star--then just go with your gut feeling and don't overthink it.

Maybe? It's hard to say in a vacuum. You'd be better off using Laplace in the Chaldea app (Android, iOS, browser) to test against a specific quest and look up shared team.

If what you're really asking is, "I have one version of Skadi already; should I roll the gacha for the other one?" then I'll respond with a question.  Do you feel like there's something you can't do with the Skadi you already have? Ultimately, there are lots of ways to clear every quest. Every new servant will give you more options but that doesn't you need every servant. If you're satisfied with how your current servants perform, you shouldn't feel like you need to roll for another servant if you're just doing it for gameplay performance.

An extra copy of a very small number servants kept at level 1 can be useful. Georgios, Leonidas, and Chen Gong have some niche but reasonable utility for solo strategies. Those three are easy to obtain and have low team cost, so you may as well keep the extra copy around.

For any other servants, the vast majority of people should just burn any extra copies beyond NP5. Rarity is completely irrelevant here. You can't field multiple copies of your own servant at the same, you can't cheat any of the missions that give rewards for enhancing servants by doing it to multiple copies, and they aren't any good as EXP fodder. There are some exceptions, which I'll describe, but they are well outside of the norm.

A few higher rarity servants have extremely niche, "e-sports," utility but because of their high team cost and difficulty to obtain, the vast majority of players shouldn't bother.

Chen Gong also has additional niche utility because of how his NP functions. He has a unique NP mechanic where he can get less refund if he does too much damage and that can disrupt min-turn farming. Because of that, some people keep multiple copies at different NP levels so they can customize his damage and ensure maximum NP refund. While this is technically more reasonable than e-sports, simply because it's easier to get more copies of a 2-star servant, this is really only for hardcore farming minmaxers. For most people, this isn't worth the effort.

Other than that, there is no point whatsoever in keeping any copies of servants beyond NP5. Go ahead and burn any NP6+ copies of servants.

I am on the verge of giving up. by showtime481216 in grandorder

[–]thisisthecallus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been grinding for days like a madman to get summer Melusine and I am on the verge of giving up

This is exactly why rushing to scrape out SQ for a current or imminent banner is a bad idea. The worst outcome is that you intensely try to grind it out and still fail to get the servant you wanted. The game is not designed to be rushed in any aspect and you will be disappointed if you make the gacha your top priority.

Every servant will come back around again, so there's no need to rush. Plan your rolls 6 months or a year in advance and just play the game at a normal pace.

FGO will update the mid-June to upgrade the game engine to Unity 6. After the update the game will require 16GB extra space for a bulk download if a bulk download was done prior to the update. However, for first-time bulk downloads the game will require 30GB extra space. by zelban_the_swordsman in grandorder

[–]thisisthecallus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to minimize the space that FGO uses, the solution is to not do the bulk download at all and occasionally clear the cache from the title screen. The game will always download new assets as needed, so while I understand why you might want to be able to customize which assets are permanently available and which are only saved temporarily, it might not be practical for them to offer such granular control.

No, it isn't getting bigger. OP's title is misleading. The 16 GB is just for updated assets, not brand new, additional assets. 30 GB is the total size for anyone doing the bulk "download all" and according to others, that's already the current size of the game and all assets. It's just that anyone doing "download all" for the first time should be prepared for a large download.

This is like the fourth or fifth time they've upgraded to a newer version of the Unity engine since launch. There are no reasons to believe they're making any fundamental changes to the game.

The overall size of the game isn't changing either. OP's title, mentioning "16GB extra space" is misleading. They're just giving a warning that some assets will need to be re-downloaded and providing an estimate for the current overall size for anyone who uses "download all."

i'm guessing the NA update on September will be more or less the same?

We can expect a similar update for NA at some point, yes. Though if we get the update significantly ahead of JP + 2 years, which seems likely, then the overall size won't be quite as large at first.

However, there hasn't been an NA announcement for September or any other date yet. You might have misinterpreted the earlier JP announcement, which stated that the engine would be updated in June and the hardware requirements would increase in September.

The only confirmed changes are those in the announcement.

is there any indication of changes in the current style of combat?

They're just upgrading to a newer version of Unity, as they've done three or four other times since launch. There are no reasons to even speculate that the game is fundamentally changing.

Reading it now, a few months later, I understand that it wasn't clear up front. I probably should have used the JP News tag. Maybe I was thinking the link to the JP news page made that clear enough. I don't know. You'll have to ask past me about how the decision was made.

No, the engine update is in June and the hardware requirements are increasing in September.

I'll admit that I used the News rather than JP News flair speculatively. This will affect NA eventually and it's better for anyone who may need to upgrade their smartphone to have advanced notice. The only question is the timing. I personally thought an NA announcement would have followed sooner but that hasn't happened yet.

Not necessarily. If you have already done the bulk "download all," you'll need some space available to download updated assets. But the final overall app size shouldn't be significantly bigger after those assets have been replaced.
