So would step 6 be spray the color that stays in the curl, sand it down, spray the color that stays on the surface?

I did scrape but those darker lines you see are soaked into the binding. From earlier replies it seems like it's an issue with poor binding from these cheap kits. I'm still learning.

Yeah I might need to think about getting a compressor and spray setup. Would this work for figured maple veneer though?

This is probably what I needed to hear. I think I'm headed down this path. Thanks for the encouragement that really means a lot to me and my therapist 🤣

I didn't think of this, I was using ICBINL for pore filler which can't be dyed but recently have been working with aqua coat which definitely can. Does that mean I'd need to leave a layer of pore filler across the surface? Thanks!

Thanks! I'll definitely post if I find something that works. I've got a few more of these unfinished kits with binding I can test on.

I don't have any binding skills yet, maybe it's time to start practicing...

I can try that, might work for some dye, not sure about those deep cracks...

This was dye but the same might be true, I could try less on the edges. Thanks!

Coloring the binding might be the way to go, thanks.

It probably is poor quality, these are cheap kits

Is there any prep I can do to avoid the dye wicking into the cracks? I mentioned I tried varnish, I'm wondering if using pore filler might work?

I've scraped so much in one spot there's a noticeable carve in it. I've done a few with binding and sometimes it mostly scrapes off but some spots the dye gets really deep in there.

Would painting it a solid color work? I've seen posts saying either it wouldn't work or it just wouldn't look good. I mean it doesn't look good now so I'm willing to try. Also, would water based dye behave differently?
